FACT SHEET

Gearbox VT2009B

FH, FM

The gearbox is equipped with oil cooler (option).

The VT2009B is a 9-speed range gearbox designed for an engine

torque of 2000 Nm.
The VT2009B has a wide ratio span that gives very high initial tractive force,
at the same time as having the capacity to achieve high average speeds.
This is possible as a result of the gear ratios being matched exactly to the
characteristics of the engine. The VT2009B is intended for transport operations involving gross combination weights of up to 60 tonnes.
The gearbox is divided into a forward basic unit and a rear range-change
unit. The basic unit housing is made of grey cast iron and contains four basic
speeds as well as crawler and reverse gears. The range housing made of
aluminium contains a range gear of the planetary type. The clutch casing is also
made of aluminium, which contributes to giving the gearbox a low weight.
The VT2009B is provided with a new shift by cable, which results in a
vibration-free gear lever with distinct gear positions. The gearbox is also
equipped with patented synchronisation, which contributes to low shifting
forces and high driver comfort. The VT2009B has long oil change intervals,
which means low operating costs and less environmental impact. When
special oil is used, the maximum oil and filter change interval is 400,000 km
or every third year.

Features And benefits

Crawler gear provides high initial traction.
Range gear of the planetary type with range lock
that prevents incorrect downshifting.
Shift by cable results in a vibration-free lever with
distinct gear positions. Together with servo synchronisation, this results in easy operation.
Prepared for fitment of power take-off, emergency
control servo pump, oil cooler, oil temperature
measurement and directly fitted hydraulic retarder.

Robustly dimensioned components for long service life

Crawler gear provides high starting traction

All gears in the gearbox are made of special steel case-hardened to

give high strength and long service life. The gears in the basic unit
are bevel gears, which means that several gears can be in mesh
with each other at the same time. This results in quiet operation
and high reliability.
The idler gears in the basic unit and the reverse idler gear for
the reverse gear are journalled in needle bearings to give low
friction.
All the shafts and planetary gears in the range-change gearbox
are journalled in roller bearings, with the exception of the low-loaded
output shaft which is journalled in a ball bearing.

The gearbox is equipped with a crawler gear to enable the vehicle

to be given a high starting torque when starting with a heavy load
under demanding conditions. The high ratio of the crawler gear of
16.85:1 meets the requirements for a rapid rear axle gear change
to be selected. This makes it possible for the cruising speed to be
matched exactly to the economy range of the engine.

Long service life with efficient pressurised oil system

The oil pump in the gearbox is of the rotor type and is fitted on the
rear end wall of the basic unit. It is driven by a gear via the countershaft. From the oil pump, the oil is forced through an integrated,
metal-free insert filter of the full-flow type at a readily access-ible
place on the rear end wall of the range housing. The oil then continues out to all the bearings, apart from the rear bearing of the
countershaft, which is lubricated by partial immersion in oil.
When the oil is cold, the surplus oil is directly returned to the
suction side of the oil pump by means of an overflow valve. The oil
is consequently heated more quickly and can reach the lubricating
points faster.
The oil level can be checked easily through an inspection window
on the right-hand side of the gearbox.

Shift by cable and servo function provide high driver

comfort
The VT2009B is equipped with a newly developed shift by cable
which results in short, distinct, gear lever movements. The gear
lever is completely free of vibration, which contributes to comfortable operation and a lower noise level in the cab.
The gearbox also has patented synchronisation which, with the
assistance of a mechanical servo function, provides extra power
at the moment of synchronisation. The torque that arises when the
synchronisation starts to slow down the rotation is converted to
an axial force which gives the driver servo assistance. This design
solution contributes to low gear-shifting forces and increased
driver comfort.

Prepared for fitment of reliable power take-offs

A range of power take-offs developed by Volvo are available for
the VT2009B, and these are fitted as separate units on the rear
end wall of the gearbox. The power take-offs are driven directly
via the countershaft in the gearbox. A complete hydraulic system
is available for the power take-offs which can be tailored to match
most applications.
