Chennai

Coined as Indias healthcare capital, Chennai rightly finds


itself on top of the list of medical tourism cities in India. The
citys exceptional medical expertise and multi and super
speciality hospitals attract more than 60,000 international
patients yearly. When compared to US, the average savings in
cost for procedures such as heart bypass, knee replacement,
liver transplant, hip replacement etc is a whopping 60%- 95%.
A walk in the famous Theospohical Society, a ride in the
comfortable disntinctive bright yellow autos, an afternoon in
the sandy beaches or just the smell of steaming hot idlies
dipped in traditional tamarind broth called sambar, is a
possible cure to your ailments, perhaps not recommended by
doctors.
1. Language- Though Tamil is the native language, English is
widely spoken too.
2. History and Politics- Chennai has a long rich history from
the English East India Company, through the British Raj to its
development in the late 20th century as a services and
manufacturing hub for India. In a stable political condition, the
Dravidan parties dominate politics- DMK and AIADMK. Chennai
is also the birthplace of Indian National Congress, a major
political party in India.
3. Places of Interest- With a range of temples, beaches and
centers of historical and cultural significance one can visit
the UNESCO Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram or stroll on
Marina or Elliots beach. Other important recreation centres
include Cholamandal Artist Village, an artists commune that
showcases the works of skilled resident painters and
sculptors. The city also has swanky malls to its credit, the
major ones being Express Avenue, Citi Centre and Phoenix
Market City.
4. Festivals, Food and Finesse- Chennais welcoming people,
who are infectiously enthusiastic about their hometown, is one
of the greatest strengths of the city. Pongal, a major harvest
festival commemorated in the month of January is believed to
be the harbinger of a new beginning. The Dance and Music
festival of Chennai, popularly kown as 'Margazhi Festival of
Dance and Music' is held during mid December to mid January.
Chennais cuisine is more than just food, it signifies its identity
card on a
domestic as well as global level. Rice, idly,
dosa served with accompanying items - sambar, dry
curry, rasam, kootu and thayir are not to be missed.
