Food Test
To carry out food test for starch, glucose, protein and fat
Test tubes, beakers, droppers, tripod stand, wire gauze and Bunsen burner
1% starch solution, glucose solution, albumen solution, cooking oil, Iodine
solution, Benedicts solution, Millons reagent, ethanol, and distilled water
1. All the food tests as shown in the table have been carried out.
2. Observation was recorded.
Food test
Iodine test for starch

Observation

1. Add 2 drops of iodine solution to 2ml of

starch solution in a test tube. Observe any
change in colour.
Benedicts test for glucose
1. Add 2ml of Benedicts solution to 2ml of
glucose solution in a test tube.
2. Heat the mixture in a water bath. Observe
any colour change.
Millons test for protein
1. Add 1ml of Millons reagent to 2ml of
albumen solution in a test tube
2. Heat the mixture in water bath. Observe
any colour change
Emulsion test for fat
1. Add a few drops of cooking oil into test
tube containing ethanol. Shake the mixture
2. Add some distilled water and shake
3. Observe any colour change

Discussion

1. Predict what will happen if a few drops of Iodine solution are put on a
cut potato?
2. Make an inference for your answer in question 1.
3. Name one other food that can be used to replace
i)
Glucose solution : __________________________
ii)
Albumen solution : __________________________
