Fire Flow Calculation in a three (3) storey fully sprinklered ordinary hazard building:

1. NFPA 1:
Fire flow shall be 1500 gpm for 2 hours. (based on construction type)
2. NFPA 13 & 14:
Calculated Sprinkler Demand is 500 gpm for 60 mins in accordance with NFPA 13, Table
11.2.3.1.2.
Standpipe Demand is 1000 gpm for 30 minutes in accordance with NFPA 14, 7.10.1.1.5,
9.2
Scenario 1:
Hydrants, Sprinkler & Standpipe system are connected through dedicated fire water
pumps, tanks.
Fire Flow shall be maximum of NFPA 1, 13 & 14 requirements.
that is 1500 gpm for 2 hours in accordance with NFPA 1, Table 18.4.5.1.2 & 18.4.5.3
Scenario 2:
Fire water pumps suction is public water system line and serving sprinkler system and
standpipe only.
Hydrants are connected on public water system.
Fire water Pump capacity shall be based on NFPA 13 section 11.1.5.3 and NFPA 14,
7.10.1.1.5, 7.10.1.3.1.1 & 7.10.1.3.1.2.
that is 1000 gpm only and this is to be ensured that public water system supplying
suction to fire water pump as well as hydrants shall be adequate to supply 1500 gpm fire
flow in accordance with NFPA 1, Table 18.4.5.1.2.

1. NFPA 1,
Table 18.4.5.1.2: minimum fire flow required for any construction type is 1500 gpm for 2
hours.
18.4.5.2.1 Required fire flow shall be reduced by 75 percent when the building is
protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system. The resulting fire flow
shall not be less than 1000 gpm (3785 L/min).
18.4.5.3: For a building with an approved fire sprinkler system, the fire flow demand and
the fire sprinkler system demand shall not be required to be added together. The water
supply shall be capable of delivering the larger of the individual demands.
2. NFPA 13
11.1.5.2: Tanks shall be sized to supply the equipment that they serve.
11.1.5.3: Pumps shall be sized to supply the equipment that they serve.
3. NFPA 14

7.10.1.1.5: The maximum flow rate shall be 1000 gpm (3785 L/min) for buildings that are
sprinklered throughout, in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of
Sprinkler Systems, and 1250 gpm (4731 L/min) for buildings that are not sprinklered
throughout, in accordance with NFPA 13.
7.10.1.2.3: Common supply piping shall be calculated and sized to provide the required
flow rate for all standpipes connected to such supply piping, with the total not to exceed
the maximum flow demand in 7.10.1.1.5.
7.10.1.3.1 For a building protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler
system, the system demand established by Section 7.7 and 7.10.1 also shall be
permitted to serve the sprinkler system.
7.10.1.3.1.1 In a building protected in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for the
Installation of Sprinkler Systems, or NFPA13R, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler
Systems in Low-Rise Residential Occupancies, the water supply for the combined
sprinkler and automatic standpipe system shall be based on the sprinkler system
demand (including any hose stream demand) or the standpipe demand, whichever is
greater.
7.10.1.3.1.2 A separate sprinkler demand shall not be required.
9.2: Minimum Supply for Class I and Class III Systems. The water supply shall be
capable of providing the system demand established by Sections 7.8 and 7.10 for at
least 30 minutes.
