This Project Study is entitled A Comparative Study and Design of Automatic Fruit Picker
prepared and submitted by Arielle Jean B. Barcenas, Cherry I. Broncate, Joven M. Malacad, in
partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering is hereby recommended for proposal.

CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
INTRODUCTION
Fruits play a very important role in our lives. History states that during the early days of
man, humans search and live on natures wonderful gifts like fruits and vegetables as natural food
source. Fruits along with vegetables have always been very essential in the growth and
development of human life.
Fruits are naturally sweet to taste, low in calorie, fat, sodium and cholesterol. They contain
many vitamins and nutrients including potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and folic (folic acid) that would
most likely reduce risks of various health diseases. Fruits are rich in fiber which is very essential
for the smooth movement of the digestive system. Some fruits contains carbohydrates which are
mainly sugar that actually breaks down easily and make a quick source of energy. They contain
at least 90 to 95% water, one of mans greatest need for survival.
Basically, fruit benefits us healthy lifestyle by giving us carbohydrates, fiber, and
micronutrients which aids our bodies to function properly. Unfortunately, fruits nowadays cost a
lot than before which makes it unaffordable to every ordinary consumers. And one of main cause
of this cost increase is due the low production of well-harvested fruits in farms and even in ordinary
backyards.
In the past years, innovations have been made to address this issue. But, some were
never really marketed and brought out for consumer use because of a lot of issues needed to be
assessed and reconsider first before investing considerable amount of money on such kind of
device. Some of which have failed to address how to lessen the strain the harvester feels when
he is picking fruits from a very high level. Fruit damage are even greater issue. Fruits harvested
and marketed by farmers are not sold since no one is interested in buying bruised fruits. This
greatly affects their income and way of living.
As researchers and mechanical engineering students, we decided to do a comparative
study of the past innovations to be able to design a portable automatic fruit picker for a more
efficient, cost-effective and quality fruit harvest that would the demand of the market and improve
not only our health and lifestyle but also the way of living of ordinary farmers.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In the research (A Comparative Study and Design of Automatic Fruit Picker), the
proponents use the principles of the design of machine elements and physics to develop an
efficient mechanism in harvesting quality fruits from trees in the most convenient way possible
and less damage or loss in production. Past innovations vary from the design of major parts of a
fruit picking device such as the receptacle, handle, and the cutting device. But none of it seem to
address all the major issues in fruit harvesting, for example:
1. How would the operator of the picking device be able to clearly identify the fruit and the
stem to cut it from when the fruit is above or beyond the eye level or vision of the operator?
2. What should be done to prevent damaging the fruit and the tree itself that may reduce its
natural reproduction?
3. What form of mechanization would make the fruit picking device portable, automatic,
marketable, more efficient and cost-effective than those existing devices in the industry?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

A. General: To conduct a comparative study between the existing innovations of fruit picking
devices, their mechanisms, methods of separating the fruit from its tree, their medium to
supply the energy needed for their devices to work and the specific materials they used to
meet the demand of their design.
B. Specific:
1. To develop a design of portable, automatic, efficient and cost-effective fruit picking
device that would meet all the major issues stated in the statement of the problem.
2. To test, measure and compare the capability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of
the developed device from the innovations that have been done in the past.
3. To establish the advantages of the enhanced portable automatic fruit picker.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study would cover the design of an automatic portable fruit picker focusing specifically in
the mechanism involved in harvesting the fruit and addressing the need to meet the issues
indicated in the statement of the problem. The study would include the design of the body/handle,
cutting device, receptacle, visual image of the cutting process, power source, and control of the
said improved fruit picking device.
The study would only cover the design of fruit picking device applicable for lightweight tree
hanging fruits like mangos, sugar apples, lemons, mangosteen, guava, rambutan, santol, star fruit,
tambis, and many more. The fruit picking device would be limited from picking fruits like coconuts,
heavy weight papaya, durian and jack fruit. The design my not be able to handle the stress load
coming from the weight of those fruits.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study which presents the convenient, is deemed meaningful and useful
of the following:
a. Farmers - this study will increase the production in harvesting the fruits, enhance their
knowledge and understanding for portable and automatic fruit picker, and improve their
income through the increase of the production of quality fruits
b. Consumers - the project may improve ordinary consumers lifestyle by providing the well
harvested fruits at a lower cost than they had before. They may be able to avail and use
also this design if this would be improved and marketed in the industry.
c. Entrepreneurs the design would be a new marketing product as a cost-effect fruit picker
for every farmers and ordinary consumers.
d. ME Students through the principles of machine design, machine elements, strength of
materials and basic electronics & instrumentation engineering involved in this study,
students may be able to see a new light of applying what theyve learned theoretically in
our engineering subjects to real life that will help improve man lifestyle or way of living.
e. ME Instructors The design of the system can be used by the instructors in their methods
of instructions about practical applications of engineering sciences.
f.

Future researchers - the results of this study will guide them in the pursuit of their
individual research similar to the topics discussed herein.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY
RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Portable Fruit Picker (Harms, 1970). The invention is a portable fruit picker and has for
its object to provide a relatively simple, lightweight device including a knife for severing close to
the fruit the stems of fruit hanging on a tree with the severing action directly caused by the knife
coming in contact with the fruit, A delivery tube is provided having webs or baffles for causing the
fruit to fall, without being bruised or otherwise injured, into a receptacle or at a predetermined
area. Also the knife may be mounted on a pole along which power from a source can be supplied
for performing the cutting operation.
Fruit Picker (Brendel, 1961). As may well be evident from the preceding general"
statement of the invention is old in the art to use extensible and contractible pole-like handles and
to install an expansible and contractible basket-like picker and receiver on the upper end thereof.
By reason of the fact that the top or mouth of the receiver is open and radially expansible and
contractible mechanical fingers are operated by a. pull-cord or the like, the user is enabled to pick
the fruit from the tree while standing on the ground. The construction just recited may be said to
be common to the art and it is also old in this line of endeavor to employ a drawstring which is
remote controlled by the user standing on the ground.
Fruit picker (Wier, 1990). A fruit picker includes a rectangular receptacle having four
vertical side walls joined by a horizontal floor. The receptacle has an open top and a hollow interior
for receiving picked fruit. A vertical one-half inch wide slot is formed in one side wall for receiving
the stem of a fruit to be picked. A telescopically extensible handle is secured to the receptacle
and includes an internally threaded clamping sleeve surrounding a first tubular member and in
threaded engagement with an end portion of a second tubular member. A frusto conical cam
surface in the sleeve is in abutment with a resilient ring within the sleeve surrounding the first
tubular member for securing the handle in a selected adjusted position. In a second embodiment,
a resilient flap members on opposite sides of the slot engage a fruit stem.
Hand-operated fruit picker (Reece, 1992). A portable hand-operated fruit picker for
mounting on a telescoping pole having a container or bag at one end thereof for receiving the fruit
when removed from a tree. The portable hand-operated fruit picker consists primarily of a
telescoping pole, a first hoop member fixed to the distal end of the upper section of the telescoping
4

pole, a second hoop member pivotally mounted to the upper section of the telescoping pole
adjacent its distal end, a container or bag fixed to the second hoop member, and a member for
actuating the second hoop member relative to the first hoop member to facilitate the fruit picking
process.
Fruit picker apparatus (Rodman, 1995). A support shaft mounts a cutter frame having a
curer cooperative with a stationary cutter to receive a tree limb there through to effect its severing.
Basket structure is arranged for mounting below the cutter frame to receive the severed tree or
fruit component.
Fruit picker (Faulconer, 1981). A hand-held fruit picker comprises an elongated, rigid
tube which has one open inlet end and an outlet end closed by a spring-biased, pivotally movable
cover. A pair of knives are mounted adjacent the inlet end of the tube. In the rest position the
knives are disposed at an angle relative to each other. To detach fruit, one of the knives is pivoted
to close with the other knife, thereby severing the fruit stem. The fruit drops into the tube where it
is stored until it is discharged through the outlet end after the cover has been removed from there.
A pair of handles are attached to the exterior of the tube: one handle includes a lever for actuating
the movement of the pivotable knife, and the other handle includes a lever for actuating the
movement of the cover from the closed to the open position of the outlet end. Force transmitting
means convert the action of one lever into a movement of the knife, and the action of the other
lever into a movement of the cover. The return of the knife to its rest position, and the replacement
of the cover as a closure of the outlet end are effected through the medium of spring forces.
Fruit Picking Device (Strus, 1995).A fruit picking device for removing a fruit from a tree
or brush. The device includes a conical receptacle having an open base end and a compressive,
resilient interior. The interior of the receptacle is compressible under the weight of the fruit and
frictionally engages with the fruit. An elongated pole is in axial alignment with the conical
receptacle wherein rotation of the receptacle rotates the fruit in order to separate the fruit from
the tree or bush.

SYNTHESIS OF THE ART

The related studies reveal that each patented fruit-picking device share common features
such as receptacle, handle, and a cutting device. However, variations in the design of each feature
is also evident. For instance, the device created by wier uses a rectangular receptacle while that
of Strus used a conical receptacle. As a receiving the fruit, Reece used a container as bag,
Faulconer used a flexible chute, and Rodman used a basket structure. The manner in which the
fruit is separated from the tree or bush is through rotation as designed by Strus. The related
studies show that the machine operated picking of fruit is just similar to how it would be picked
using the human hand.
Synthesis on related literature:
The related literature reviewed reveals the concern for a need for an efficient and cost
effective large scale fruit harvesting. The major issues addressed by Li, Lee, and Hsu was the
camera sensor and filter designs and image segmentation methods used to identify the fruits
within the image.
K.F. Sandees focused in the need to look into alternative methods of maximizing manual
picker productivity in order to minimize the cost of manual picking. He further stated that none of
the mechanical systems investigated have matched the high-quality selection ability of manual
pickers.
G.E Coppock's attention was on the fragility of the fruit; the picking device must not damage
the trees in any way which would reduce their annual production.
E. Suitler Fred noticed that most of the early form mechanization inventions were small and
of the hard-held variety.
Based from the foregoing, the fruit picking device available were still inefficient and lack
certain features required by large-scale fruit harvesting. It is evident that there is an ongoing quest
to address such inefficiency.
GAPS IN THE LITERATURE
The present study therefore aims at providing clear answers to the following:
1. Image-defined selection ability
2. Cost-effective large scale fruit harvesting
3. Damage-free fruit harvest
The above-mentioned queries were the gaps bridge by the present study.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Machine design is the process of engineering design. A machine is made up of
mechanisms that work together to satisfy the requirements of what the machine needs to
6

accomplish. Machine element refers to an elementary component of a machine. Strength of

materials, also called mechanics of materials, is a subject which deals with the behavior of solid
objects subject to stresses and strains. Instrumentation engineering is a specialized branch of
electrical and electronic engineering and it deals with the measurement, control, and automation
of processes. These are the principles needed to be applied to be able to achieve the goal of the
design of the portable automatic fruit picker with visual image.

Chapter III
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
The proponents have formulated a design for an automatic fruit picker with the use of a
battery to power the system and use a control button for an automatic performance of the cutting
blade. The blade is made up of two sharp edges with a rotating motion for cutting to be more
efficient and less time consuming. Also the control button is used for automatic extending and
shortening of the body of the system. Extending for the purpose of attaining the height of the fruit
that will be pick. To shorten so that it can be portable. That fruit picker will be using a stainless
steel for the body and will have a net or basket to prevent the fruits from falling. The net will be
detachable and will accommodate only lightweight fruits. Since the major objective is to produce
high quality fruits, the design would include a camera for visualizing the position of fruit that will
be harvested connected to the rod right above the rotating blade. The mechanism employed was
about to produce an automatic and portable fruit picker. The gathered data served as the basis of
the determination of the success of the study as the efficient of the new improved automatic and
portable fruit picker through the test stated in the study.
RESEARCH PROCEDURES
Step 1. Data Gathering
The researcher gathered information and ideas about the concepts through research data,
knowledge from the adviser and other professionals, analyzing the previous studies related to the
study by searching the web, reading books and journals and other related references. Contacted
persons who has the knowledge on the mechanism of a portable and automatic fruit picker.
Step 2. Preparation
Preparation includes the gathering of materials, tools and equipment and preparation of
testing setup design.
Step 3. Assembly of the Setup
The researcher provided two setups:
1. Data from previous fruit picking device stated on related studies.
10

2. Portable automatic fruit picker with visual image of the cutting process.
Step 4. Testing of the Setups and Measurement of parameters
The first setup was based from previous studies. Parameters like the strength of
materials, speed cutting, power source and load capacity were gathered and recorded together
with the second setup made.
Step 5. Analysis
After testing and measuring of the parameters of the two setups, the analysis and
comparison between the previous design of a fruit picker and proposed automatic and portable
fruit picker with camera was done.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES

In response to the statement of the problem in chapter 1, which is directed on coming up
on a fruit picker that is automatic and portable, this shall discuss the research methods available
for the study:
Experimental Setup
The previous set up of fruit picking devices were stated at Related Studies.
The modified set up is Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image of the cutting process.
Comparative Study No. 1: Body/Handle
For Portable fruit picker (Harms, 1970)
A portable fruit picker comprising a body having a slot into which the stem of fruit to be picked is
received, knife means carried by said body, power means supported by said body for moving said
knife means across said slot to sever the stem of fruit received therein, trigger means supported
by said body and operatively associated with said power means, said trigger means being
engageable by the fruit carried on the stem within said slot for causing said power means to move;
said knife across said slot and cut the stern of the fruit when said trigger means is moved toward
said body by a pull against said fruit, means on said body for supporting said picker at the desired
fruit severing elevation and conveying means carried :by said supporting means for receiving the
11

severed fruit, cushioning the fall thereof and delivering it to a predetermined area
For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image
A telescopically extensible handle using an extensible and contractible pole-like handles that can
be manually or automatically operated by man standing on the ground to reach the desired fruit
to be harvested within the height range of the device.
Comparative Study No. 2: Cutting Design
For Fruit picker apparatus (Rodman, 1995)
Invention provides a support shaft that mounts a cutter frame having a cutter cooperative with a
stationary cutter to receive a tree limb there through to effect its severing.
For Portable fruit picker (Harms, 1970)
The knife or cutting blade is attached to or mounted by means of a screw pivot on the plate so
that when the knife is rotated on such screw pivot it will cut a stem in the slot.
For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image
The blade is made up of two sharp edges with a rotating motion for cutting to be more efficient
and less time consuming.
Comparative Study No. 3: Receptacle
For Portable fruit picker (Harms, 1970)
A delivery tube is provided having webs or baffles for causing the fruit to fall, without being bruised
or otherwise injured, into a receptacle or at a predetermined area.
For Fruit picker by (Wier, 1990)
A rectangular receptacle having an open top and a hollow interior; said receptacle including four
vertical side walls joined by horizontal floor.
For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image
A fabric net or bag will be used to receive the fruit cut from the stem. This is to prevent damage
12

or bruise on the fruit due to the impact cause by gravity.

Comparative Study No. 4: Power Source
For Portable fruit picker by (Harms, 1970)
Power may be provided for actuating the knife in any desired manner as for example by means
of hydraulic cylinder having a piston rod threaded or otherwise connected to a head, carrying a
crank pin, having a head portion which rides in a slot in the plate, and a body portion which rides
in a slot in the knife. When the crank pin is reciprocated by the piston rod attached to the piston
against the action of the return spring, the head of the screw will move lengthwise of the slot, thus
causing the knife to be rotated about the screw pivot, the body of the pin traveling in the slot in
the knife or blade.
For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image
Power will be provided by batteries connected to the double-edged blade though wires and
necessary part causing the blade to rotate and be used to severe the stem and harvest the fruit.
Comparative Study No. 5: Visual Image
For Hand-operated fruit picker (Reece, 1992)
The person will be operating the hand-held fruit picking device standing at ground level, looking
at the fruit and the cutting process at a distance.
For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image
The person will be operating also a hand-held fruit picking device standing at a ground level,
looking at a small monitor connected to a wireless camera located right above the rotating blade
to ensure accuracy and less or better no fruit damage.
Comparative Study No. 6: Control
For Fruit picker (Brendel, 1961)
The construction just recited may be said to be common to the art and it is also old in this line of
endeavor to employ a drawstring which is remote controlled by the user standing on the ground.

13

For Portable Automatic Fruit Picker with Visual Image

The body or pole extensibility is controlled through up and down button in the handle while the
blade rotation is controlled by long pressing a certain button in the handle too.

STATISTICAL TOOLS AND ANALYSIS

To analyze the data gathered on the conducted test, only one sampling was done. The
proponents used observation tables to record and validate the strength of materials, supply of the
power consumed, speed of cutting and capacity of fruits.
