    Iowa State Fair Butter Cow

    In 1911, J.K. Daniels sculpted the Fair's first
    butter cow and was succeeded by J.E.
    Wallace of Florida. In 1957, Earl Frank Dutt of
    Illinois took over the sculpting duties. Norma
    Duffy Lyon of Toledo, Iowa, began sculpting
    in 1960, becoming the fourth person and first
    woman to sculpt the Fair's butter beauties.

    After 24 years of different cities hosting the


    state fair, it settled in Des Moines in 1886.

    as the 8th Wonder of
    the World. It is the
    largest collection of
    rocks and gems
    anywhere in the world.
    The Grotto tells the life
    of Christ in stone.

    The Balloon Museum in Indianola, Iowa highlights the history of ballooning. The
    National Balloon Classic is held in Indianola every year in late July.

    Iowas Beautiful Covered Bridges


    Madison County is the
    Covered Bridge Capital of
    Iowa, with the largest group
    of covered bridges that
    exists in one area in the
    western
    half
    of
    the
    Mississippi Valley. Six of the
    original nineteen covered
    bridges of Madison County
    remain, five of which are
    listed on the National
    Register of Historic Places.

    destroyed by fire in 2002 and

    Classic. This Central Iowa festival is held every
    summer, beginning the last week of July.

    The Iowa State Fair attracts
    over a million visitors each
    year. It is located in the state
    capital of Des Moines, Iowa.
    The first fair was held in 1854 in
    Fairfield Iowa. In 1886 it was
    moved to Des Moines.

    The butter cow has been a yearly


    tradition since 1911.

    RAGBRAI is the Registers Annual


    Great Bike Ride Ride Across Iowa
    that takes place each summer.
    The ride starts at the Missouri
    River on Iowas western border
    and takes a new route each year
    east across Iowa and ends at the
    Mississippi River.

    Pappajohn Sculpture garden

    Iowa is the only state bordered by two navigable


    rivers.
    The Kate Shelly Bridge, located in Boone, is
    rumored to be haunted.

    Des Moines has a Minor League baseball


    team named the I-Cubs.
    Some players go on to play with the Chicago
    Cubs.
    The I-Cubs play at Principal Park/Sec Taylor
    Stadium.
