Procedural steps

Step 1
The images of the butterfly, cut the images
first and glue it in another piece of card, then
cut out the butterfly shape.
Step 2
Score each side of the abdomen with a ruler,
so that the wings will fold (to make the wings
more flexible).
Score along the base of each wing, pushing
down quite hard, that will allow to fold up the
wings neatly, leaving the abdomen in the
middle. Now the wings can flap really well.
Step 3
Cut 2 strips of corflute -3cm wide and 16 cm
long strips. The reason to get these strips are
because it will be easy to hinge when scoring
it. We are making two identical strips; it is
good to tape them together temporarily.
Step 4
Next is to cut a hinge at the end of the strip
with a box cutter and hinge needs to be 1cm
from the end. Mark off 1cm and again score
along there. You cannot go all the way
through. So the ends hinge over really nicely.
Step 5
Now you need to do another score line 3 cm
from the same end but on the other side. So
turn the strip over and once again measure
from the same end. And score 3 cm hinge
that over.
Step 6
Now separate the 2 stripes. And check
whether you got a nice working double hinge
joint.

Step 7
Use 2 pieces of square section wood.
8mm8mm or 1.5cm wide and about 5 cm
long wood. Not too important about the exact
length.

Step 8
Glue each piece with a hot glue gun
underneath the flange of the barrel of the
syringe on each side.

Step 9
Now put the tubing on because it will be hard
to put later on. Press it really firmly.

Step 10
Next is to get the syringe ready to glue it to
the hinge strips. Now glue that assembly on
to the strip. The 2 strips need to be kind of
come together at the top. Push the plunger of
the syringe all the way down and then the
top level of the plunger should line up with
the lower hinge. So, when the plunger
pushed all the way down, it should be level
with the hinge there. Then glue in the correct
position and make sure it is in the center of
the strip. Make sure both the strips are
exactly in the same level.
Step 11
Next, we are going to cut out some rightangle triangles to make the model to glue it
down on to a base. Dimensions are not too
important. Cut the strip with a pair of scissors
or a box cutter, in half diagonally to make 2
right-angle triangles. Glue the triangles to the
bottom of each strip. Make sure that the base
is lined up.
Step 12
Because the plunger needs to be glued to the
underside of the abdomen. It is a little bit too
wide. So, snip the each side of the plunger
with a card cutting scissors.

Step 13
Glue the mechanism on to the butterfly. Turn
the butterfly upside down and then turn the
mechanism upside down, push the plunger in
so that it lines up with the top part of the
strips folded over. Now position it on the
butterfly like the 2 strips are parallel to each
other. Get the glue gun on the plunger and
the other strips. Glue it on the butterfly and
press down for a few seconds.
Step 14
Cut the other images of eggs, caterpillar,
cocoon and the flowers and glue them in a
cardboard.

Step 15
Take the plastic shoebox and make three
holes on the top surface and two holes on the
sides. Skewers are good to make a hole. It is
important that the side holes are directly
across from each other. Make the holes from
a box cutter and a screw driver. Be sure they
are wide enough to hold a straw.
Step 16
Put straws into holes and cut the extra part.
This part is essential in reducing friction
between the box and skewer.
Step 17
To make the cams you can take some wheels
or bottle lids and put holes in it with a box
cutter, so that the skewer can go through it.
You can attach one cam directly in center and
other holes on the sides of the bottle lid
surface.
Step 18
Take the green colour cardboard and glue it
in the top of the shoe box and make the
holes on the cardboard as well.

Step 19
Attach cams to the skewer with a hot glue
gun and position the cams. Place the whole
thing inside the two horizontal straws of the
plastic box.

Step 20
Now add the other cams to the vertical
straws. Be sure that the cams are lined up so
they touch each other.

Step 21
Glue other images of the eggs, caterpillar
and the cocoon on the vertical rotating
skewers.

Step 22
A cardboard/pop stick sandwich is a good
handle to turn the cam driven system.

Step 23
Glue the syringe powered butterfly on the top
of the shoe box. Make sure it is in the center
of the back of the box so that the life cycle of
a butterfly can be shown nicely.

Step 24
The final product of the butterfly life cycle will
look like this and students can do some
finishing touches at the end.
