Climate Change Activity Questions

1. How much CO2 do you contribute each week?

kmtravelled
kg CO 2
2.3
=kg of CO2 per week
km per litre
L gasoline

*Information you need to answer this question:

How many trips do you make in a car each week?

Think about your trips to school every day, your trips to your extracurricular
activities, church, to visit friends/family etc.
How many km do you travel in a car per week?
You can look these up using google maps.
How many litres of gasoline do you use per week?
This will vary depending on the size of vehicle you have. A small car uses roughly
12.75 km/L, a medium sized vehicle uses 8.50 km/L, and a large vehicle uses 6.38
km/L
How many kg of CO2 are released into the air when a litre of gasoline is burned?
This answer may vary depending on the vehicle, however for this assignment we
will use an average of 2.3 kg of CO2 are released for every litre of gasoline
burned.

Example:
If I travel 100 km each week in a small vehicle using roughly 12.75 km/L, how much CO2 per
week do I contribute?
100 kmtravelled
kg CO 2
2.3
=18 kg of CO 2 per week
12.75 km per litre
L gasoline
Question:
Now you try - how many kg of CO2 are emitted by your car each week?

2. Describe what lifestyle changes you can make to lower your CO2 emissions. What are the
negative consequences of high levels of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere?

3. What is the volume of ice loss on Greenland?

*Information you need to answer this question:

The percentage of ice loss on Greenland is 0.55% volume loss per year
The increase in temperature is approximately 0.04 degrees per year

Example A:
How many years will it take for the temperature to increase by 1 degree, if the overall
temperature increase per year is 0.04 degrees?
temperature increase
= years
ratetemperature increases each year
1 degree
=25 years
0.04 degrees per year
Example B:
If ice loss is determined to be 0.55% per year, what is the percent ice loss after 25 years?
25 years x 0.55 % per year = 13.75%
Question A:
How many years will it take for the temperature to increase by 5 degrees? (Hint: the increase in
temperature per year is listed above).
Question B:
What is the percent ice loss after 10 years if ice loss is determined to be 0.6% per year?
