SED 223 Science and Health

Melanie Trzeciak
Topic: Space
Grade Level: 4
Unit Library
The Heavenly Zoo- retold by Alison Lurie
The Heavenly Zoo tells of legends and origins of many of the constellations. The book is
divided into sections by the constellations and each constellation starts by telling where
the story originated. I would not consider this book a reading book for the students
because it does not tell a story throughout, but I would bring the book up as an interesting
topic when we talk about the constellations and how they are named.
Earth Science for Every Kid- by Janice VanCleave
Earth Science for Every Kid is a resource book that shows students and educators science
related experiments. I would most likely use sections 1 and 5 in teaching Earth and Space
because those are the experiments that relate closely to my topic. This book shows hand
on examples of how to relate science to kids.
Space- (BK Eye Wonder)- by Simon Holland
Space is a picture book that brings up the topics of the planets, astronauts in space, the
milky way, telescopes, and space ships. Although this book has a lot of pictures, it also
has in-depth quality information. Specific pages have sections labeled data zones that I
find particularly interesting because those are bullet point facts about the material that is
on the page. It is important to keep in mind that all students in your science class may not
be at the same reading level, so I wanted to include some lower reading level books.
My Place in Space- by Robin and Sally Hirst
My place in Space is a very basic space picture book. I picked this book specifically as a
transition book to read before we start the section on space to evaluate the students
understanding on the topic. I thought this would be a good book to use before we got into
the in-depth information, so that I was not staring with all difficult concepts.
The Mysterious Universe- by Ellen Jackson
The Mysterious Universe is one of the more complex books in my library. It touches on
the very distant topics of space, such as dark energy and black holes. This is information
that my not be addressed as often in class, but would be helpful for students who want to
further their knowledge on the subject.
My Tourist Guide to the Solar System and Beyond- DK

My Tourist Guide to the Solar System and Beyond is a fun reading book that also gives
the students fun facts. It is a no pressure book that has information scattered throughout
the page. Although this book may be distracting for some students, it states a lot of
valuable information. This book also has a distance chart at the bottom of every page that
shows were you are in relation to the sun and the other planets.

Professor Astro Cats Frontiers of Space- by Dr. Dominic Walliman and Ben Newman
Professor Astro Cats Frontiers of Space is the first book that I have chosen that is strictly
illustrations. The illustrations in the book are recent and engaging for young learners. The
have little cartoons on some pages that show funny things happening in the solar system.
This book also relates space to concrete items in every day lives of the children. An
example would be comparing the planets to the different sizes of fruits.
Earth and Space- by Anita Ganeri, John Malam, Clare Oliver, and Adam Hibbert
Earth and Space is a question and answer book. This book goes through 249 questions
about Earth and space. The first 129 best relate to the topic of space that I am planning
my unit on. This book does a great job of not just answering the questions, but also
making sure any further questions are also answered.
The Atlas of Space Exploration- by Tim Furniss
The Atlas of Space Exploration is a large information book. The information is cut up into
smaller bock of text, but because of the large pages it still looks like a lot of information.
I liked this book because it brought the historical aspect into space research. It brings up
the Egyptians, Kepler and Copernicus. I believe this book contains the most information
about space and covers the most topics. One specific thing I like about this book is that
the page you are reading also directs you to past and future pages in the book to find
more information.
The Magic Tree House Midnight on the Moon- by Mary Pope Osborne
I picked a Magic Tree House book because of the fact that it is in a series. This might
encourage readers to read it because they have enjoyed the other books in the past. I also
liked how this book was not straight information about the moon or the solar system, but
rather it was a story that takes place on the moon.
