tackifiers and thickeners also provide drip resistance and serve to inhibit
stray mist in pneumatic system lubricants.
Tackifiers are solutions of polymers in oil, and through most of their history they were limited
to polyisobutylene dissolved in petroleum oil. More recently, however, other polymer types
with molecular weights from about 200,000 to 6,000,000 have been used to make petroleum
oil tacky [1]. The tackiness of oil solutions depends upon several parameters, including the
chemical structure of the polymer (coiled vs. uncoiled for polymers with small Kuhn segment
length [2] or the orientation of chains in the direction of extension for more rigid polymer
chains), the molecular weight of the polymer and the viscosity of the base oil. For a given
polymer, increasing the base oil viscosity is accompanied by an increase in tackiness. For
the same oil, increasing the polymer molecular weight is accompanied by an increase in
tackiness.
Conventional tackifiers based on polyisobutylene are not thermally stable and tackiness and
viscosity are lost at temperatures above about 90C.
Three polymers that produce tackiness in petroleum oil were studied: ethylene-propylene
copolymer with a molecular weight about 200,000 and two polyisobutylenes with molecular
weight 2,000,000 and 4,000,000. The diluents used in making the tackifier additives were
Group I through Group III base oils.
The novel adhesives can be modified and/or confectionized in a conventional fashion. Typical
examples are conventional tactifiers such as, hydrocarbon resins, optionally modified
colophonium resins, beta pine resins, polyterpine resins, metal on containing modified
colophonium resins, such as zinc resinate, terpene phenol resins, ketone resins, aldehyde ;
resins, cumaron-indene resins, dicyclopentadien resins, all of which can be used and added to
the copolymers in quantities up to 50 weight percent. Other additives include homopolymers such
as poly-ethylhexyl) acrylate or poly(n-butyl acrylate);
plasticizers, for example, based on mono-, di- or polyester compounds polychlorinated
hydrocarbons or paraffin oils, dyes, pigments, stabilizers, rubber elastic materials such as natural
or synthetic rubbers or styrene butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl ether or polybutadiene oils which
can be added in small quantities.
The adhesive mass may be especially compounded or inter-polymerized to provide the balance
of adhesiveness characteristic of pressure sensitive adhesives in general. Any of the
conventional tackifiers such as rosin, dehydrogenated and hydrogenated rosin, polyterpenes,
coumaronc-indene resins, polyalkyl styrene and the like may be used in proportions well known in
the art.
Tackifiers
Tackifiers may be added to the aqueous coating composition of the present invention when it is
necessary to improve the affinity of a coated film formed from the aqueous coating
composition with a substrate or a primer.
As tackifiers, conventional tackifiers such as silane coupling agents, titanium coupling agents,
aluminum coupling agents, and the like may be used. Among vulcanizing agents, those having
adhesive properties such as polyamidoamine, phenol resins, etc. can function as tackifiers
depending on a compounded amount.
h) Non-tackifying Agents
To impart non-tackiness to the surface of a coated film formed from the aqueous coating
composition of the present invention, non-tackifying agents can be compounded in the aqueous
coating composition of the present invention.
Preferable examples of non-tackifying agents are as follows:
1) Fluororesins
polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymers (ETFE),
polychlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene-perfluorovinyl ether
copolymers (EPA), tetrafluoroethylene-perfluorovinyl ether copolymers (PFA),
polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), etc.
2) Terminal-modified Polyfluoropolyethers
polyfluoropolyethers having functional groups reactive with fluororubbers (e.g. NH2, CH2OH,
etc.) at chain ends.
The fluororesin 1) is compounded in an amount of 400 wt. parts or less per 100 wt. parts of a
fluororubber, while the terminal-modified polyfluoropolyether 2) is used in an amount of 20 wt.
parts or less per 100 wt. parts of a fluororubber.

A viscosity index improver, also known tackifier. To increase the viscosity of the oil, to
improve the viscosity-temperature characteristics, in order to accommodate a wide
temperature range, the oil viscosity requirements. Mainly for the deployment of multi-
stage engine oil, transmission oil and is also used for automatic temperature
hydraulic oil. Its main varieties are polymethacrylates, polyisobutylene, ethylenepropylene copolymers, copolymers of styrene and dienes. Polymethacrylate improve
oil low temperature performance is good, and more for gasoline engine oil; ethylenepropylene copolymer shear stability and thermal stability, suitable for supercharged
diesel oil, gasoline engine oil can also be used.
This product can be used as a high performance tackifier for natural and synthetic
elastomers for improving long term building tack in compounds and cements.
