Admission Guidelines for Special Entrance Examination
For Privately-Funded International Students Living Overseas
(For students living overseas who are currently enrolled in an educational institution in a country other
than Japan under the education system of that country)
An overview of the Special Entrance Examination for Privately-Funded International Students Living
Overseas
The mission of Osaka University is to nurture outstanding individuals who possess a high sense of ethics to
become global citizens and leaders in a variety of fields worldwide under the objective of Live Locally,
Grow Globally. To accomplish this mission, it is critical to create an internationally-minded campus where
Japanese students and international students challenge and enrich each other. For this purpose, Osaka
University is committed to inviting outstanding international students as well as sending Japanese students
overseas, and to expanding courses taught by foreign faculty members and offered in English. As a result,
inspired students who come together at Osaka University from all over the world can share the knowledge
and abilities they have acquired at Osaka University with the world. This is the future of Osaka University.
Standing by this principle, Osaka University has established this entrance examination program to accept
international students for four years, thereby increasing the number of undergraduate international students
who can converse in Japanese, study together and share the benefits of a variety of perspectives with
Japanese students. Under this entrance examination program, applicants can take entrance examination
without coming to Japan. Qualifying students will come to Japan and take a preliminary and extensive
Japanese language education program for six months prior to enrollment and admission at Osaka
University. Students enrolled in this program with outstanding academic performance and overall
excellence may be eligible for tuition fee exemption or scholarship program(s). They will also be able to
live in on-campus dormitories for the first year on a preferential basis. The tuition fee exemption or
scholarships may possibly continue to be granted for the second and subsequent years to students who
exhibit outstanding academic performance and overall excellence.
Osaka University welcomes a diversity of prospective students who have acquired outstanding academic
abilities; students who are interested in learning Japanese while directly interacting with those from other
cultures; students who think for themselves and do not just mechanically absorb information; and students
who actively strive to discover and share the truth.
Applicants must have passed the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test level N1 or N2, or have a
proficiency level equivalent to JLPT level N1 or N2, prior to submitting an application. Please
refer to 2. Eligibility for application for details. Only students who are currently enrolled in an
educational institution under the Korean education system with JLPT N1 level are eligible to apply
for the Special Entrance Examination for Privately-Funded International Students Living Overseas
which does not require a period as a research student with the preliminary and extensive
Japanese language education program.
At this entrance examination, screening for both research students and undergraduate students will
be conducted concurrently. Individuals who pass this entrance examination and complete the
enrollment procedures are first admitted as research students, receiving preliminary and extensive
Japanese language education; after completion they become undergraduate students eligible to
receive undergraduate education.
