Executive Branch: The Executive Branch. From the President, to the Vice

the President of the United States, who also acts as head of state and

Public or Civil Service: A civil servant or public servant is a person in the public

sector employed for a government department or agency. The extent of civil

Legislative Branch: The legislative branch includes: the Monarch (represented in

Canada by the Governor General), the Senate, whose members are appointed by
the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister, and the House of
Commons, whose members are elected by voters.

Leader of the Opposition: The Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition (French: chef de la

seats in the House of Commons but is not the governing party or part of the governing

Bill: A bill is proposed legislation ( under consideration by a legislature. A bill

does not become law until it is passed by the legislature and, in most cases,
approved by the executive. Once a bill has been enacted into law, it is called an
Act or a statute.

Judicial Branch: Judiciary, judges of the courts, collectively; also the branch of

government in which judicial power is vested. Judges are public officers


appointed to preside and administer the law in a court of justice. The Constitution
Act of 1867 provides for the establishment and operation of Canada's
professional judiciary.

Riding: Electoral district (Canada) An electoral district in Canada, also known as

a "constituency" or a "riding", is a geographical constituency upon which

Political Party: A political party is a group of people who come together to contest

Cabinet Solidarity: Cabinet solidarity means that all members of cabinet must

support cabinet decisions. Cabinet ministers cannot dissociate themselves from


or repudiate the decisions of their cabinet colleagues unless they resign from the
cabinet.

Responsible Government: Responsible government refers to a government that is

responsible to the people. In Canada responsible government is more commonly


described as an executive or Cabinet that is dependent on the support of an
elected assembly, rather than on the monarch.

Party Platform: A political party platform or platform is a formal set of principal

goals which are supported by a political party or individual candidate, in order to

Representation By Population: Representation by Population (Rep. by Pop.) is a

method by which seats are allocated in the House of Commons in such a way as
to vary with population. The higher the population of a province, the larger the
number of seats allocated to that province will be.

Prime Minister: The Prime Minister of Canada (French: Premier ministre du Canada) is the
primary minister of the Crown, chairman of the Cabinet, and thus head of government for
Canada, charged with advising the Canadian monarch or federal viceroy on the exercise of

the executive powers vested in them by the constitution.[1]


Not outlined in any constitutional

document, the office exists only as per long-established convention (originating in Canada's
former colonial power, the United Kingdom) that stipulates the monarch's representative, the
governor general, must select as prime minister the person most likely to command the
confidence of the elected House of Commons; this individual is typically the leader of the
political party that holds the largest number of seats.

Cabinet: A cabinet is a body of high-ranking state officials, typically consisting of

the top leaders of the executive branch. They are usually called ministers, but in
