The Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 Holy Communion
PRELUDE
INTRODUCTION
All may stand and make the sign of the cross, the sign with which we are
marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
Today Isaiah prophesies that a young woman will bear a son and name
him Emmanuel. The gospel is Matthews account of the annunciation and
birth of the one named Emmanuel, God-with-us. During these final days of
Advent we pray, O come, O come, Emmanuel, a beloved hymn based on
ancient prayers appointed for the seven days preceding Christmas. On this
final Sunday in Advent we prepare to celebrate the birth of the one born to
save us from the power of sin and death.
Louis-Claude Daquin
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
CONGREGATIONAL SONG:
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, vv. 6-8 (ELW 257)
LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. In your Son,
Emmanuel, you have shown us your light and saved us from the power of
sin. Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath. Increase our longing for
your presence, that at the celebration of your Sons birth his Spirit might
dwell anew in our midst, for he is our light and our salvation. Blessed be
God forever. Amen.
CHILDRENS MESSAGE
PROCESSIONAL HYMN: Blessed Be the God of Israel (ELW 250)
GREETING
Behold, now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation. The grace
of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

FIRST READING:
Isaiah 7:10-16
10
The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let
it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I
will not put the LORD to the test. 13Then Isaiah said: Hear then, O house of
David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God
also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young
woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him
Immanuel. 15He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to
refuse the evil and choose the good. 16For before the child knows how to
refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you
are in dread will be deserted.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19

Romans 1:1-7
Verse:
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When
his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived
together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her
husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to
public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had
resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and
said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for
the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and
you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their
sins. 22All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord
through the prophet:
23Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means, God is with us.24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as
the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no
marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him
Jesus.
The gospel of the Lord!
Praise to you, O Christ!
Please be seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming (ELW 272)
AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM for Michael and Barbara Mayer
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
As we anticipate the fullness of the presence of Christ, we join with the
church throughout the world, praying for those who are affirming their
Baptism, for all the baptized everywhere, and for all who are in need.
A brief silence.
Each petition ends with:
let us pray.
Have mercy, O God.
The blessing may be repeated for each person. The minister may lay both
hands on the head of the person and say:
Stir up in Barbara and Michael the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of
wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both
now and forever. Amen.
A representative of the congregation addresses the assembly.
Let us rejoice with this sister and brother in Christ.
We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks
and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world.
Please greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.
Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, those spoken aloud and
those known only to you, and grant us peace through Jesus Christ, our
coming Savior. Amen.
PEACE
Michael and Barbara, you have made public profession of your faith. Do
you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:
to live among Gods faithful people,
to hear the word of God and share in the Lords supper,
to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,
to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?
Each person responds:
I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.
The minister addresses the assembly.
People of God, do you promise to support this sister and brother and pray
for them in their life in Christ?
We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.
The presiding minister prays for Gods blessing.
Let us pray.
We give you thanks, O God that through water and the Holy Spirit you give
us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life.
Please be seated.
