Cleaning Guide - 2017
General Guidelines:
1. When you are finished using something, please put it back.
2. Please bring all dirty linens to the dirty laundry bin in the laundry room. Do not leave them throughout the shelter.
3. If something is missing (i.e. gloves, paper towels, sponges) please inform staff as soon as possible so that we may replace.
4. Always wear disposable gloves that we provide for everyone. Change gloves if you are changing between crates, cabins, or
kennels.
Dog Rooms:
1. Remove dog from room. If no one is not available to take dog out, please hitch them on a doggy hitch.
2. Thoroughly scrub down Kurunda bed (if present) with Rescue disinfectant spray.
3. Pick up as much solid waste as possible with plastic baggie and paper towels first. Place everything in baggie and tie tightly
before disposing.
4. For spot cleaning, spray area with Rescue disinfectant spray and wipe with paper towels.
5. If floor is still dirty, go over the entire corral with the mop.
a. If mop bucket is dirty or empty, please ask staff to renew disinfectant. DO NOT try to mix the solution yourself.
6. Allow floor to dry for several minutes before returning dog to corral.
7. Please make sure dogs have a fresh bowl of water at all times.
8. If dog does not have a Kuranda bed, you may put a large blanket, sheet/rug in the corral.
Dog Crates:
1. Remove dog from crate. If no one is not available to take dog out, please hitch them on a doggy hitch.
2. Remove linens, bowls, etc. from crate or cabin. If linens are heavily soiled with feces or vomit, please THROW THEM OUT.
Otherwise, bring them to the laundry room.
3. If the crate is soiled, remove as much solid waste as possible with a plastic baggie and paper towels first. Put dirty paper
towels in waste bag, tie up tightly and dispose.
4. Use Rescue disinfectant spray and a sponge to thoroughly scrub down the crate or cabin.
5. Dry off crate or cabin with paper towels.
6. Wipe off any remaining moisture.
7. Put a clean sheet or blanket in the crate along with fresh water.
Cats:
1. There is a cleaning cart located in laundry room that should be rolled through the back hallway into the cat area when
you are doing anything more than simple spot cleaning.
At all times it should be stocked with the following
A box of gloves
Rescue spray (disinfectant)
Dawn dish soap
Windex (not to be used for
disinfecting)
Clean linens
A dust pan and dust broom
Paper towels
A sponge or power scrubber for
cabin corners
1. Each room has its own litter scoop. This scoop should never leave the room except to be cleaned in the slop sink in the
laundry room. The scoop should NEVER be used in a different room. Use the assigned scoop to remove waste from the
litter box and place it in a plastic bag. When finished cleaning, the bag should be tightly sealed and placed in the trash bin
in the Cat Kitchen. Litter boxes should be dumped completely and disinfected once a week, or more frequently if heavily
soiled.
2. The broom and dust pan for Cat Rooms 1,2, 3 & 4 are located on the cleaning cart in the laundry room. These items should
NEVER be used in Cat Room 6. Please sweep up any food or litter on the floor and then mop each floor.
3. The mop and bucket are also located in the laundry room. Volunteers should have staff mix the bucket of cleaning
solution. Mix 1 (one) cup of Rescue concentrate per 1 (one) gallon of water. This mop and bucket should NEVER be used
in Cat Room 6.
4. Dirty linens should be removed, shaken thoroughly to remove any food or litter, and placed in the yellow laundry bag on
the cleaning cart. Once the bag is full or you are done cleaning, the soiled linens can be placed in the washing machine, or,
if that is running, placed in the large laundry bin. Linen soiled with feces or vomit should be thrown away. Toys and
large beds CANNOT be washed, so if soiled should be thrown away.
5. All window sills, window frames, door frames and Kurunda Cat Trees should be wiped down with Rescue spray.
6. Fresh water and dry food should always be available in Rooms 1, 2, & 3. As the population in each room changes, so too do
their dietary needs so consult the feeding chart. Volunteers must ask staff before refilling food bowls.
7. If there is vomit or feces on the floor or furniture please scrub with Rescue disinfectant sprays. Dry surface thoroughly.
Cat Rooms 4 & 5:
1. Each cabin should be cleaned completely, with food, water, bedding, toys and litter placed into the respective cabin and
gloves removed and changed to a fresh pair before moving to the next cabin. ALWAYS change gloves between cabins.
NEVER distribute toys or linens from one cabin to another. If, after cleaning, you find a toy loose in the room do not reuse
it, throw it out.
2. When cleaning a cabin for a new cat to occupy, after wiping out any loose litter or debris, scrub the cabin thoroughly, and
remove all deep set dirt from corners. Also, open the trap door between cabins and clean the area around the portal. Spray
the cabin down thoroughly with a pump spray made with Rescue. Allow it to sit and air dry for at least 10 minutes, then
repeat. Wipe the cabin down one last time to remove any residue before setting up for the new cat.
3. Have all cleaning supplies (litter, litter boxes, trash bags, paper towels, brooms and Rescue spray) pre-set in the room
before opening any cabins. Allow each cat to exit their cabin before cleaning (shy cats can remain inside and you can clean
around them). ONLY 1 CAT SHOULD BE OUT AT A TIME.
4. Kittens should be cared for by staff only. Kittens should NEVER leave their cabins or be allowed to walk on the floor. Place
kittens in a clean, disinfected carrier designated just for them or clean around them inside the cabin.
a. If cleaning with a cat in the cabin, spray the Rescue onto a paper towel and not directly into the cabin.
5. If multiple cats are in one cage (such as a litter of kittens), they can be placed in the same carrier.
6. Remove linens, bowls, litter boxes, etc. from cabin. If linens are heavily soiled with feces or vomit, please THROW THEM
OUT. Otherwise, bring them to the laundry room.
7. Use hand-held dustpan and brush to sweep out any food and excess litter.
8. If cabin is heavily soiled, remove as much solid waste as possible with a plastic baggie and paper towels first. Put dirty
paper towels in waste bag, tie up tightly and dispose.
a. Clean and disinfect the cabin using Rescue disinfecting sprays and let it air dry
9. Unless clean/ unused, the cardboard litter boxes should be thrown out and completely replaced each morning and
throughout the day as needed.
10. To assemble new litter boxes, fold them with the white side facing in, brown side
facing out. Tuck tabs inside the box and fold the tabs back to hold the box
securely closed.
11. There should be just enough litter to cover the bottom of each box. Clean litter
scooping spoons are on the cleaning cart. One heaping scoop per box is sufficient
to cover the bottom of each box.
12. During the day, spot check litter boxes and scoop feces using gloved hands or
poop bags. In the evening, if the litter box is soaked through with urine or
heavily soiled, it can be thrown out and replaced.
