Some of the key takeaways from the passage are that Panama was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes like the Cuevas and Coclé, it was colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century, and relinquished control from Colombia and the US to become an independent nation in 1903 which allowed the construction of the Panama Canal.

Two of the main indigenous tribes that inhabited Panama prior to European settlement were the Cuevas and Coclé tribes. These tribes nearly disappeared due to lack of immunity to European infectious diseases brought by the settlers.

The original name of Panama comes from the Kuna word 'bannaba' which means 'distant' or 'far away'. However, others believe the name comes from a species of tree or means 'many butterflies' in an indigenous language.
