DESCRIPTION:

There are many standards and standards of testing to certify various systems on a mining vehicle.
Included among these are the tests that relate directly to the Rollover Protective Structure/Falling Object
Protective Structure certification, the seat belt, and seat installation testing. The following standards
information explains how the size of the standard operator is used as a parameter of these tests.

Customers must be informed of the consequences of making any changes to the operator seat, its loca-
tion, or the ROPS/FOPS without prior written approval, and the possible effects on certification of these
systems.

It has come to the attention of Komatsu America Corp. that many customers are requesting seats for
larger-than-standard operators. The standards referenced below are some of the basic standards that apply
to the testing and certification of either the operator seat, operator seat belt, or the ROPS/FOPS.

The protection offered by the ROPS/FOPS may be impaired if modified or damaged. To maintain the
manufacturers certification, any repair or alteration on the ROPS, including installation of a non-
standard seat or relocation of the seat, must have prior written approval from the Komatsu America
Corp. Engineering Department.

Note that all of these standards and tests are based upon the 5th percentile female figure and the 95th per-
centile male figure. According to the standards, a large male figure weighs 96 kg (211.6 lbs), a medium-
sized male figure weighs 73 kg (160.9 lbs), and a small male figure weighs 48 kg (105.8 lbs). A large fig-
ure is 1,880 mm (74.0 in.) tall, a medium-sized figure is 1,715 mm (68.5 in.) tall, and a small figure is
1,550 mm (61.0 in.) tall. Any operator exceeding these limits may experience problems with access, rider
comfort, clearances, and strength and/or length of restraint systems.
