WALT DISNEY SUMMARY #1

By. Qonitha Audy 11 H

Walt Disney is a name you will always recognize everywhere you

go, you will see his work anywhere in any part of this world. This world
phenomenon has everyone amazed with his work every time, but do
know how did Walt Disney establish his name, his work and his life?

The Disney family was living in Chicago way before Walter was
born. In Chicago, the father was working at a construction site, which is
a pretty harsh environment especially in the year when Americas
political condition is not good and with that kind of environment it
really changes the mentality and behavior of their father who became
abusive and strict to their children. The Disney family itself is known
for their itinerant habit so when the 4 th child was born, which is Walter
Elias Disney they moved to a rural smaller city that has very accessible
way to downtown when they needed to. Right there, the Disney family
bought a farm exactly when Walter was 5 years old (1906). Walter has
3 older brothers and one younger sister, the siblings live happily there
and they gradually became close to the animals that they love so
much.

Walter Disney is one of the children between his siblings who

have the closest relationship to the animals, he even think that the
animals are his best friends and his favorite animal is pig who is a
porker. Apparently his behavior was very understandable since Walter
live with a family who are very strict, their parents who are mostly
busy doing their own things and he, himself never learned to play like a
boy and Walter later said, I guess I really loved that pig She had an
acute sense of fun and mischief. In the 1908, there is a new park
school opened but Walter parents refused to send him there until the
fall of 1909. During the one year period Walter spend his time playing
with older men in the neighborhood who he cherishes so much. These
men are 70 years old in average and they are more than happy to
have the company of Walter and one day these men and his
grandmother, Mary Richardson Disney gave Walter a task to draw a
picture of a horse and if he comply it Doc Sherwood (Leighton I.
Sherwood) will give him a nickel or something. So because of that,
Aunt Margaret, which is Robert Disneys Wife, bought him some paper
and crayons as a tool for him to draw. This task is the thing that made
Walter very interested with the idea of drawing. Later in 1909 Walter
and his sister started entering school on the same year despite their
one-year difference.

The Disneys family condition got worsened, not only their farm
is failing but the whole family was stressed out with their everyday
chores and work that gives so much pain in the head and body. So
during the summer of 1910 the family moved to Kansans City to start
anew. All the rainbows and sunshine that was imagined by Walter
crumpled into pieces when he sees his fathers psychological condition
that got more than worse; he became even more tyrannical and brutal
than ever. Both him and his brother, Roy got the most chores and work
more than the others. They were dragged out of their bed at 3:30 am
just to deliver newspaper with no wages and/ or allowances for the
whole year. Being the drawing maniac he was, Walter secretly bought
papers for himself to draw and he also worked at a candy store for his
own sake to buy more paper. His brother Roy also did the same as
Walter, its just the difference is that Roy have an interest in music so
he often sneak into the local dance hall to play with the other musician
until later he got caught.

Besides drawing, Walter also developed an interest in trains so during

the summer of 1911, after they moved to Kansas he would work in a
summer job with his uncle, Mike Martin, who is a train engineer. In the
summer job he would help with the railroad, selling newspaper and
snacks to the travellers. Not only that, Walter is known as the hard
working teenager and he spend his whole teenager time by working
from place to place and he has no interest in girls. In his high school,
Walter took photography and drawing classes as well as entering the
Chicago Art Institute (Walter move again to Chicago after living in
Kansas for awhile). His work often got featured in local high school
magazine. Heres what he said about his high school year, I was quite
a ham. . . . I loved this drawing business but everything was a means
to an end. When I put on a stage play I would make my own scenery. . .
. I was putting on these little plays at school where I was always
staging em, di- recting em, acting in em. . . . I always got something
where I could fit the kids, because the kids would always laugh at the
other kids.1 He later dropped out of school at the age of 16 to enter at
army as the ambulance driver at France.
