Where to find Language Packs for Revit 2016?

Since version 2016, localized versions of Revit are no longer distributed as separate installation
programs or in the form of add-on Language Packs. All supported languages are included in a single
installation program.

You can select the installation (setup) language and the language of the main application - the language of
your current environment is preselected.

During the installation, optional localized content is downloaded - libraries and offline help.
How to easily repeat last command in Revit?

If you want to repeat the last used command in Revit, just press the [ENTER] key - like in
AutoCAD.

Another option is right-clicking in the drawing area and selecting the function "Repeat
[commandname]" from the context menu. The function "Recent commands" also allows to
repeat another command from the recent history of entered commands (max. 5 listed).

You can also assign the "Repeat Last" command to another custom keyboard shorcut
(hotkey).
How to download and install an update of Autodesk software - e.g. Revit 2017.1?

The installation image of an update of your Autodesk CAD software (e.g. Revit 2017.1) can be
downloaded from several sources, e.g. after logging in to your subscription account (on
subscription.autodesk.com), in the section Product Updates, ...

... or after clicking into the Autodesk Desktop App in the category Revit > Revit 2017.1
Update > Update

After downloading the installation file and launching it, the update process is started. At the
end, you will need to restart your computer to complete the update.
Autodesk Revit will then start in the updated version 2017.1.

Can I use two versions of Dynamo on the same PC?

Yes, you can have multiple versions of Dynamo installed on a single workstation. You can
switch between the individual versions when running Dynamo from Revit - by clicking on the
ribbon tab Manage > Dynamo you will display a dialog, where you can choose which version
you want to run/launch:

Question
Can I use the default parameter URL to reference a
relative link?

Is it possible to use the internal parameter URL (type parameter

from ID data in Revit families) to link a document using a
relative path?
You can use relative paths only for files located in the same
folder as the project. If you want to reference such file in the
value of the parameter URL, just enter its filename including
extension. Then you can open it from a Revit project by double-
clicking on the ellipsis button in the right pane.
How to copy Revit custom colors to another PC?

You cen preset up to 16 custom colors in Revit. If you need to transfer this setting to a
different computer, or preset it on a newly installed Revit workstation, you can just copy the
section [Colors] from the text file Revit.ini.

To copy the setup between PCs, use the following steps:

1. Close Revit.
2. Open Revit.ini (in Notepad) from the source computer. Revit.ini is stored in the default
folder:

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2017\

3. Copy (Ctrl+C) the section [Colors]
4. Open Revit.ini on the target computer and paste the section [Colors] to it.
5. Save and close the file.

Which Autodesk products do support the IFC format?

The following Autodesk products and product families in versions 2016, 2017 and higher
directly support data files in the BIM Exchange format IFC (Industry Foundation Classes).
A360 (View, Team, Mobile...)
Advance Steel

How to avoid (disable) automatic restart after Windows Update?

If you are running a lengthy procedure on your CAD Workstation - e.g. computing visualization or
simulation - there may arise a problem when an unplanned forced restart interrupts the
computation. Such restart may be invoked by the Windows Update service (after postponing it
repeatedly).

For such cases you may want to set that such forced restart must not occur when there are any
logged on users on the particular workstation.

This setting can be done in the "Local Group Policy Editor". Run gpedit.msc and in its dialog go
to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

Double-click on the item "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates
installations" and check its option "Enabled". Exit the dialog with OK/Apply.

Alternatively you can also make the re-prompt interval longer - set the item "Re-prompt for restart
with scheduled installations" to Enabled with a value of e.g. 1440 minutes (a whole day).

If you are using a Windows version without a Local Group Policy Editor (e.g. Home), you can
perform this setting also in the Registry. Run RegEdit and switch to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

Here create a new DWORD key named NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers and set its value to 1.

If you only need to one-time block the forced restart, you can just stop the "Windows Update"
service temporarily (as an Admin). The service will be re-enabled after reboot. From the CMD.exe
window, enter the command:

net stop "Windows update"

How to import an Illustrator file (.AI) into AutoCAD (.DWG)?

Most vector files from Adobe Illustrator can be directly read into AutoCAD with the function for
attaching or importing PDFs. Newer versions of the .AI format have internally the PDF format
(must be saved with the Illustrator option "Create PDF Compatibile File").

So you can just rename them from the extension .AI to .PDF and then use the command
PDFATTACH or PDFIMPORT in AutoCAD. The file name should not contain spaces. So you can
import logos, sprites or other graphical motives and pictures created in Illustrator or other vector
editor.

Another option is saving (exporting) the DWG or DXF file directly from Illustrator. In the export
options, try the options "Preserve Appearance" or the opposite "Maximum Editatibility" for
optimization of transferring text and complex splines (curve segmentation).
Revit LT 2017 in more, "secret" languages.

The entry-level BIM application Autodesk Revit LT was always available in a limited number of
language localizations. The new version Revit LT 2017 changes the game.

The new Revit LT 2017 is distributed as a multilanguage version supporting English, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish and Spanish. Other languages like Chinese, Portuguese,
Czech or Russian are not officially supported and the product installer does not offer them.

But the required localization files are included in the installation and so you can launch Revit LT
2017 in additional, "secret" languages - e.g. in Chinese or Russian:

1. On your Desktop or in the Start menu, right-click on the Revit LT 2017 icon and choose
Properties
2. In the Shortcut tab, change the command in the Target field -> change the three-letter
language code to e.g. CSY (or RUS, PTB, CHS, CHT)

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit LT 2017\Revit.exe" /language CSY

3. Click the OK button

Now the application startup icon will launch the localized version of Revit LT.

The "Render" command is not active.

In my opened project in Revit, the command Rendrovat is grayed out, inactive.

Solution: This command is available only in 3D views. Activate one of the existing 3D views in your
project, or create a new 3D view.

Error: Some or all of the family files you selected cannot be loaded.

When trying to load a RFA family file into Revit, you get the error message:

Some or all of the family files you selected cannot be loaded. You must choose family files of the
category XYZ. Do you want to retry loading a new set of files?

You are probably trying to load a specific type of family from a running insert command - e.g.
inserting a new window type from the Window command. To load any type of RFA file to your
current project, use the command Insert > Load from Library > Load Family.
Which Autodesk products support 3D printing?
3D printing is supported in most current Autodesk 3D products. Alternatively you can export your
3D model to a STL format file and send this file to 3D printer (device or service).
Applications supporting 3D print (as of 1/2016):
AutoCAD (all 3D varieties, i.e. except LT and 360)
Revit

Inventor

Fusion 360

3ds Max

Maya

Meshmixer

Memento

We recommend the application Autodesk Print Studio (see Download) for 3D printing including
model preparation and adding supports.
How to insert a vertical dimension to 3D in Revit?
You can dimension Revit constructions also in 3D views, horizontal dimensions can be inserted as
easy as in plan views.
There is a small problem when you decide to add vertical dimensions in this 3D view - e.g. wall
heights. This is caused by the reference plane being set by default to the horizontal
position/orientation.

But you can just use the Architecture ribbon and the Work Plane tab to start the Set Work Plane
tool.

A dialog box for setting a work plane will be launched.

Select the second option - Pick a plane and choose any vertical edge in your model, in this case a
wall edge.
After you have set a new work plane this way, you can now insert also vertical dimensions to your
3D view.
