    a) f ( 1) = ( 1) + ( 1) 9 ( 1) 9 = 0 therefore x + 1 is a factor of f ( x )

    c) ( x + 1) ( x 3) ( x + 3) = 0
    x = 1, x = 3, x = 3

    a) Given that x 1 is a factor of f ( x ) , find the value of a (3 marks)

    Solution

    a) Since x 1 is a factor of f ( x ) , then f (1) = 0 ,

    b) f ( 2 ) = 2 ( 2 ) + 5 ( 2 ) ( 2 ) 6 = 0

    x + 2 is a factor of f ( x ) and there is no remainder

    c) ( x 1) (2 x2 + 7 x + 6 ) = ( x 1) (2x + 3) ( x + 2)

    b) Using your value of k , find the coefficient of x in the expansion of ( x + 3 ) p ( x )

    a) f ( 2 ) = k ( 2 ) 12 ( 2 ) k = 3

    k = 3

    b) ( x + 3) (3x3 12 x 3) , so the coefficient of x comes from -3x1 +3x-12=-39
