PRECAUTIONS PFP:00001

Precautions EDS000F1

When installing rubber parts, final tightening must be carried out

under unladen condition* with tires on ground. Fuel, radiator
coolant and engine oil full. Spare tire, jack, hand tools and mats
in designated positions.
Use flare nut wrench when removing and installing brake tubes.
After installing removed suspension parts, check wheel align-
ment and adjust if necessary.
Always torque brake lines when installing.

REMOVAL
1. Remove tires, and remove parking cables from back plate and operating lever.
2. Remove brake tube from wheel cylinder. M
CAUTION:
While brake tube is removed, be sure to protect painted surface from brake fluid.

While brake tube is removed, do not depress brake pedal.

3. Remove axle mounting nuts, and remove axle shaft assembly

from axle housing.
If axle shaft assembly is difficult to remove by seizure, use a
sliding hammer (special service tool) and axle stand (special
service tool).
4. Remove O-ring from axle housing.
5. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, remove oil seal.
CAUTION:
During removal, be careful not to scratch axle housing.

INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL

Axle Shaft
Check shaft for cracks, bend, and uneven wear. If any, replace shaft.
Wheel Bearing
Check bearing for deformation, cracks, damage, or uneven wear. If any, replace wheel bearing assembly.
INSTALLATION
1. Using a drift (special service tool) and drift bar (special service
tool), install oil seal to axle housing as shown in the figure.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse oil seal. Before installing, apply grease (Nis-
san MP Special Grease No. 2) to lip.
2. Install O-ring to axle housing.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse O-ring.
3. Set axle shaft assembly to axle housing, and tighten axle mount-
ing nuts to specified torque. RAB0302D
CAUTION:
Do not reuse mounting nuts.
4. Install parking cable and brake tube.
5. Bleed air in brake system.
Disassembly and Assembly EDS000F5

DISASSEMBLY
1. Secure axle shaft assembly in a vise.
CAUTION:
When using a vise, insert a copper panel or aluminum panel between shaft and the vise.
2. Temporarily tighten nut to rear axle stud bolt. Using a hammer, remove stud bolt from rear axle.

3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, widen lock washer tabs.

4. Using a rear shaft bearing lock nut wrench (special service tool),
loosen wheel bearing lock nut.
5. Remove lock washer and wheel bearing lock nut from axle shaft.

SDIA0390J

6. Using an axle shaft bearing puller (special service tool), remove

bearing cage from axle shaft.
7. Remove back plate from axle shaft.
8. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, remove grease seal from bear-
ing cage.
9. Using a chisel, remove bearing spacer from axle shaft.
