Statistics Problem Set

This document provides instructions for a chemistry problem set involving 6 problems related to experiments measuring things like the speed of Reverse-Flash, amount of dead man's blood needed to poison a vampire, concentration of selenium in brown rice, air pollution monitoring, and pH of a buffer solution. Students are instructed to show work on a yellow paper, sign a statement that they did not seek outside help, and solve the problems which involve calculating statistics like mean, standard deviation, range, and identifying outliers using Grubbs test.

College of Science STATISTICS
University of the Philippines Problem Set
Diliman, Quezon City 1101

INSTRUCTION:
Answer the following completely in a yellow paper.
Write on top of your paper the statement below, and affix with your signature.

I have not sought anyones help in accomplishing this problem set.

Name and Signature

1. Speed of Reverse-Flash
Barry Allen tried to synthesize a drug which can slow down the speed of the Reverse-
Flash and obtained 15.7mL of it. However, based on his calculations, he should have
synthesized 21.9mL of that drug. Determine the absolute and relative error.

2. Dead Mans Blood

Dean Winchester attempted to determine what amount of dead mans blood is needed
to poison a vampire. He obtained the following data: 10.0mL, 14.5mL, 13.5mL, 9.9mL, 12.3mL,
14.6mL, 19.8mL, 13.5mL

Solve for the following

a) Mean
b) Variance and Standard deviation
c) Relative standard deviation
d) Range and Relative Range

3. Vervain : A potential poison

Mikael Mikaelson have found out that vervain can also be used to poison vampires.
Because of this, he performed an experiment on one of his captive vampires and determine
the amount of vervain needed to poison it. He got the following results: 8.17mL, 15.7mL,
19.4mL, 16.2mL, 18.1mL, 27.5mL

a) Using the data obtained here and on 3, calculate the pooled standard deviation.

b) Using Grubbs test, determine whether the maximum or minimum value is an outlier. (95%
confidence level)

4. Determination of Selenium
The reproducibility of a method for the determination of selenium in foods was
investigated by taking nine samples from a single batch of brown rice and measuring the
selenium concentration in each. The following results were obtained:

Sample no. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Selenium conc., g/g 0.07 0.07 0.08 0.07 0.07 0.08 0.08 0.09 0.08

Calculate the mean, standard deviation, relative standard deviation, range, and
confidence limit (95%) of these results.

5. Air Pollution Monitoring

The following results were obtained with a single air sample during an air pollution
monitoring program.

a) Perform Grubbs Test on both the maximum and minimum values. (Only one outlier may
be detected at a time)
b) Calculate the mean, standard deviation, relative standard deviation, range, and
confidence limit (95%) of the results (excluding the outlier).

Trial no. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
SO2 conc., g/m3 80 77 84 86 84 79 83 82

Number of 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
data points
G-value (95% 1.463 1.672 1.822 1.938 2.032 2.110 2.176 2.234 2.285
confidence)

6. pH of a Buffer Solution
Seven measurements of the pH of a buffer solution gave the following results:

Measurement no. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
pH 5.12 5.20 5.15 5.17 5.16 5.19 5.15

a. Perform Grubbs Test on both the maximum and minimum values. (Only one outlier may be
detected at a time)

b. Calculate the mean, standard deviation, relative standard deviation, range, and confidence
limit (95%) of the results (excluding the outlier).
