BIM
Building Information Modelling

BIM, is a way of describing a collaboration design process

using computer model data rather than separate sets of
drawings.
What is BIM?

BIM, is not a single software solution.

BIM, is a process of sharing model data between the

members of the Project Team using different software.

The aim is to use each piece of project data

to a maximum effect reducing repetition and errors.
BIM: Building Information Modeling
Model data is shared in order to strengthen
the coordination between disciplines and
parties associated with the project.

Methods of BIM Integration

Custom Links High level, fit for the purpose,

(ProtaStructure > Revit Structure integrator)

OpenBIM (IFC) Good level, mainly object data. (all industries)

CIS/2 Medium level, Mainly object data

(CIMSteel, AISC)

SDNF Medium level, object data (only for steel industry)

BIM Efficiency

ACIS (AutoCAD) Low level, extruded shapes

DWG, DXF Low level, no object intelligence

Benefits of BIM

Improved communication
between the Project team
3D Visualizsations
Automated drawing creation
Automated quantity estimations

Accurate design decisions can

be made earlier and faster
Big reduction in repetitive
works
Reduction in clashing
Reduction in material waste
BIM in Public Sector
*
BIM is mandatory in publicly funded
projects in many countries today,
including:
USA, Norway, Finland, Singapore and
many more
UK (by 2016):
To reduce the capital cost and reduce
carbon
Turkey:
Clients request in most of the
important projects
Firms that fail to adopt BIM risked being
betamaxed out of existence.

Difficulties in Transition to BIM

Hardware and Software Cost

Training Costs
Vital step in BIM transition
Transition from 2D drawings to 3D modelling
More qualified technicians/engineers are required
Designer/modeler needs to have detailed information about the project.
Compatibility and communication between different software
platforms
Key Requirements for BIM to Succeed

The ability of software solutions to communicate with each other

A full appreciation of internal and externall processes
Good level of communication in the team
BIM Education and planning
Structural BIM

Structural Engineering firms has two main deliverables:

Design
Documentation

A pivotal role in the full adoption of BIM

Construction Documentation Modeling

Example: Autodesk Revit

A BIM platform for
architects,
structural engineers,
Mechanical/Electrical engineers
Used to create
Design reports
Construction documentation
Material listings

Example: ProtaStructure
Structural Engineering Platform for Code Based Design & Detailing
Communicates with Revit
BIM in Architecture
BIM in Structures
BIM in MEP
Code Compliant Design

Structural Engineer must comply with several codes of practice.

Code Compliant Design and Detailing

A single structural model that contains all data required to

analyse, design and detail a structure in strict compliance
with a selected code of practice

ProtaStructure
Design Codes: TS-500, EC2, BS8110, ACI, HK2004, CP65
Seismic Codes: TDY2007, EC8, IBC, UBC,
SAP2000 ETABS
