Required Background Information (What should they know before they begin?)
Basic art principles and elements, along with how to properly use art materials that are
listed below.
Students should have read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but I will reread it. But not for
the lesson I am presenting in the ARE 361 class.

Materials and Supplies

Pre-painted/colored construction paper
pencil
crayons
colored pencils
scissors
glue
Book: "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
Book: "The Art of Eric Carle"
writing worksheet to explain why they picked that object they drew.

Introduction (Hook/ Bell Work)

I will show a few images of Eric Carles art then ask students to quickly write about their
favorite animal, food, flower, or bug that they will need to draw for the lesson task. After
telling students what to write I will go over our writing structure, which is OREO. Open,
Reason, Explain, and Opinion.

Success Criteria (SWBAT) Based on Objectives in "kid-friendly" language

Students will be able to create an animal, bug, food or plant using collage techniques that
Eric Carle uses and write about why it is their favorite thing.

Explaining and Modeling:

Instruction (I Do)
Teacher will make sure students have read The Very Hungry Caterpillar before and
show images from other books illustrated by Eric Carle so students can see his work.
The Teacher will introduce a book called The Art of Eric Carle that explains his
artwork and how to recreate it.
The teacher will then show students an example of how to create art similar to Eric
Carles collage pieces.

Practice (We Do)

Teacher will allow students to look through books after showing her example so students
can see details in collages and better understand his work.
Teacher will then allow students to get materials needed to create the favorite thing they
chose to write about for the bell work.
Teacher will also consider allowing students to pick a different object if their choice
seems too difficult. (May be only be for students with an IEP.)

Independent Practice, Assessment, and Feedback:

Independent Work (You Do)
Students will be urged to stick with their original favorite choice and then be allowed to
review Eric Carles work and watch a video of how he does the artwork.
They will then begin to draw pieces of their object onto different colors of construction
paper then cut them out to piece together their image, they will glue them together and
add details with crayons or colored pencils to finalize their art. They will then prepare to
discuss with the class why they picked that object/ thing. If there is time they can rewrite
their bell work to create a final draft, which will be graded.

Conclusion (Wrap Up/ Exit Ticket)

If students have extra time or finish early they may rewrite their bell work to create a
final draft.
Students will share their writing to the class to explain why they picked what they did.
The students will hand in their art and their writing for a grade.

Notes to Self: Show video of how he creates his art while they work.

Please consider: Giving feedback to students while they work and making it clear that their
writing needs to be in a certain format at the beginning of class.
Common misconceptions students might have
How you will gather evidence of learning? Ask questions while they complete the task, review
their writing and how well they are able to present/ read it to the class using the OREO approach.
What interdisciplinary activities will be embedded in your lesson? Writing using a certain
format, reading it to the class, and reading the books before or listening to me read it to the class
is all incorporated in Language Arts.
