Poems

In this abundant earth no doubt

Is little room for things worn out:
And if before the days grew rough
We once were lov=d, us=d-well enough,
I think, we=ve far=d, my heart and I.
~Elizabeth Barrett Browning, AMy Heart and I@

Do you remember still the falling stars

that like swift horses through the heavens raced
and suddenly leaped across the hurdles
of our wishes- do you recall? And we
did make so many! For there were countless numbers
of stars: each time we looked above we were
astounded by the swiftness of their daring play,
while in our hearts we felt safe and secure
watching these brilliant bodies disintegrate
knowing somehow we had survived their fall.
~Rainer Maria Rilke, AFalling Stars@

Desert Places

Snow falling and night falling fast

In a field I looked into going past,
And the ground almost covered smooth in snow
But a few weeds and stubble showing last

The woods around it have it- it is theirs

All animals are smothered in their lairs
I am to absent-spirited to count;
The loneliness includes me unawares

And lonely as it is that loneliness

Will be more ere it will be less-
A blanker whiteness of benighted snow
With no expression-nothing to express

They cannot scare me with their empty spaces-

Between stars-on starts where no human race is
I have it in me so much nearer home
I scare myself with my own desert places

~Robert Frost

Choices
By: Nikki Giovanni

If I can=t do
What I want to do
Then my job is to not
Do what I don=t want
To do
It=s not the same thing
but it=s the best I can
do

If I can=t have
What I want... then
my job is to want
what I=ve got
and be satisfied
that at least there
is something more
to want

Since I can=t go
where I need
to go...then I must... go
where the signs point
though always understanding
parallel movement
isn=t lateral

When I can=t express

what I really feel
I practice feeling
what I can express
and none of it is equal
I know
but that=s why mankind
alone among the animals
learns to cry.

Stars
I liked the way they looked down from the sky
And didn’t seem to mind the way I cried.

And didn’t say, “Now wipe away those tears,”

Or, “Tell us, tell us what’s the matter here!”

But shining through the dark they calmly stayed,

And gently held me in their quiet way.

I felt them watching over me, each one-

And let me cry and cry till I was done.
~Deborah Chandra

Lullaby
Will you hold me in your lap?
Will you cuddle me so tight?
Will you kiss my fearful brow,
And turn off the light?
Will you soothe away my worry?
Will you sing the sweetest song?
Will you chase my fears away,
And rock me all night long
~Georgia Heard

Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken- winged bird
That cannot fly

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
~Langston Hughes

Bliss
Your eyes, your smile.
Your touch, your kiss.
Your promise, your words.
Our everlasting bliss.
~Penelope Bell

Dreamers
Every dreamer has to wake up sometime.
Leave their beautiful illusions
For the ugly truths of reality.
Give up their comfortable delusions
For the sharp pain of morality.
And face the cold dawn’s approaching light,
That they push away with each passing night.
~Rachel Elizabeth Fields

Skyscrapers
Do skyscrapers ever grow tired
Of holding themselves up high?
Do they ever shiver on frosty nights
With their tops against the sky?

Do they feel lonely sometimes

Because they have grown so tall?
Do they ever wish they could lie right down
And never get up at all?
~Rachel Field

A Summer Morning
I saw dawn creep across the sky,
And all the gulls go flying by,
I saw the sea put on it’s dress
Of blue midsummer loveliness,
And heard the trees begin to stir
Green arms of pine and juniper.
I heard the wind call out and say,
“Get up, my dear, it is today!”
~Rachel Field

Love Spell
Every time I look at you
My heart skips a beat
I wonder if you know, my love,
That my heart is at your feet
I leave it there for you to do
Whatever that you wish
You could take my heart,
And love me,
Or just leave me in this bliss.
~Ana Martinez

To lay kiss on your lips,

so gentle and delicate
is like picking the drops of dew
off the petals of a rose

I hold you close and feel safe,

Sheltered in from the rain,
From the storms that grow and surround me.
I take your hand and look into your eyes
And see a heart made of gold and soul so pure.

You see you are an angel, and angel to me.

I could not help but fall madly in love with you,
The one who stole my heart.

I’m glad you did

Because I never find one such as you…
Some one who makes each day the best,
Each laugh the longest,
Each tear the saddest,
And a life, my life, worthwhile.

~Peter Oliveri
Sometimes at night, when I look to the sky,
I start thinking of you and then ask myself, why?
Why do I love you? I think and smile,
because I know the list could run on for miles.
The whisper of your voice, the warmth of your touch,
so many little things that make me love you so much.
The way you support me, and help with my emotions,
the way that you care and show such devotion.
The way that your kiss, fills me with desire,
and how you hold me with the warmth of a blazing fire.
The way your eyes shine when you look at me,
lost with you forever is where I want to be.
The way that I feel when you're by my side,
a sense of completion and overflowing pride.
The dreams that I dream, that all involve you,
the possibilities I see and the things we can do.
How you finish the puzzle that lies inside my heart,
how that deep in my soul, you are the most important part
I could go on for days, telling of what I feel,
but all you really must know is my love for you is real.
~Scotty Wright

For Paul
I love the way you touch me
so soft and sensuously.
It makes me tingle all over.
I love the way you kiss me.
It starts a fire deep down inside of me
and makes me yearn for you even more.
I love the way you look at me.
It makes me feel beautiful and treasured.
Most of all I love the way you love me.
When you walk in my whole day gets better.
And even when you're not with me
you're in my thoughts always.
It doesn't matter what we don't have or what we do have.
The most important thing is we have each other
and no one can take that away.
I am the luckiest woman in the world
and I don't need or want anything
but you beside me loving me to the end of our days.
