ThisIndianStandardwasadoptedbytheBureauofIndianStandards,afterthedraft
finalizedbytheFireFightingSectionalCommitteehadbeenapprovedbytheCivil
EngineeringDivisionCouncil.
Allbuildingsdependingupontheoccupancyuseandheightareprotectedbyfixed
firefightinginstallationsaspertheprovisionslaiddowninSP7(Part4).Thefixedfire
fightinginstallationsareprovidedinmultistoreyedbuildingofheight15metresorabove
andalsoothercategoriesofbuildingsoflesserheightbutwithspecialrisks/basement,etc.
Similarly,allfactories/manufacturingindustriesalsogoforinstallationoffixedfirefighting
systemforprotectionofthepropertyandlife.Thesystemmaybeintheformofwetriser,
externalhydrantorintheformofsprinkler/emulsifiers,etc,orallofthem.Themost
importantcomponentinsuchasystemisthefirepump.Acarefullychosenfirepumpof
appropriatecapacityandinstalledproperlywillformthebackboneofsuchsystem.Even
afterinstallation,itisabsolutelyessentialthatthefirepumpsareproperlymaintainedand
regularlytestedsothattheyareinserviceableconditionandcomeintooperationinstantly
atthetimeofexergencies.

externalfirehydrantsarecoveredinseparateIndianStandards(seeIS3844andIS13039).

Undergroundorsurfacewatertank,constructedtostorewaterforfirefighting
purpose.
3.2TerraceTank
Aconcrete/masonry/plastic/steeltankconstructedorerectedonterraceofbuilding
forfirefightingpurpose.
3.3PrimingTank
Asmalltankerectedinside/overthepumphouseandabovethefirefightingpumps
tokeepthepumpcasingandsuctionofthefirepumppermanentlyflooded.Thisisrequired
incaseofnegativesuction.
3.4FootValvecumStrainer
3.4.1
Avalvefixedinthesuctionstrainerofthefirepumpwhichopensonlyinwardsto
allowinflowofwaterintothepumpsuctionandfirepumpwhenthepumpisactuated
automatically/manually,ThisisrequiredincaseofNegativesuction.

3.6TerracePump
Anelectricallydrivenpump,locatedontheterraceconnectedtoaterracetankwith
gatevalveonsuctionsideandtotheinternalhydrantsystemwithnonreturnvalveon
deliveryside.
3.7FirePump
Anelectric/dieselpumpinstalledatstaticwatertanktochargethewetriser
systems/sprinklersystem,etc.

pump,asthecasemaybe,whenthepressureinthesystemfallsbelowthepresetlevel.
3.11CirculationReliefValve
Thecirculationreliefvalveputinbelowtheshutoffpressuretoprovidecirculation
andtherebyrelievetheextrapressureinthepump.
4FIREPUMPSANDPUMPHOUSE
4.1
Thepumphouseshouldbelocatedpreferablyoutsidethebuildingwithaminimum
clearanceof6mfromadjoiningbuildings.Thepumphouseshouldhaveadequatenatural
ventilationwithwindows,fittedwithexpandedmetalforprotection.Inordertofacilitate
properinstallationandmaintenanceoffirefightingpumps,thereshouldbeprovisionof
mildsteelgirderofappropriatexsectionatsuitableheightinpumphouseforfixingchain
pulleyblock.
4.2
Ifthepumphousehasadieselpump,theexhaustpipeofthedieselengineshouldbe
extendedtooutsidethepumphouseandexhaustdischargedatanappropriateheightinthe
openair.
4.3
Thefloorofthepumphouseshouldbeslopedtothefarthestendtodrainawayany
waterleakingfromglands,valves,etc.
4.4
Thepumphouseshouldhavenormallighting,andalsoemergencylightingfacility,
eitherfromasecondsourceorfromthegenerator.

Ifthepumphouseislocatedinsidethebuilding,eitherongroundfloororinthe
basement,itshouldbeseparatedfromtherestportionwithawallhaving2hfirerating
andfirecheckdooratitsentrancehaving1hfirerating.Forpumphouseinbasement,
forcedmechanicalventilationshouldbeprovided.Pumphouseingroundfloorshouldbe
locatedonperipheryofbuildingwithaccessdirectlyfromoutside/openarea.Thepump
houselocatedinthebasementshouldalsohaveeasyaccessibilityfromoutsidepreferably
throughramp.
5ARRANGEMENTOFPUMPS
5.1
Thelayoutplansofpumpsinstalledandfirewaterlinesshouldbedisplayed.The
pumphouseshouldbeofadequatedimensiontohouseallthepumpswithsuction,delivery
pipes,fittingsandstartercontrolpanel,airvessel,etc,withadequatecirculationarea.
Adequateheadroomclearanceallaroundthepumpformaintenanceshallbemade
available.Aminimumclearanceof1matfrontandbackand0.75monsidesandbetween
pumpsshouldbeprovidedforallmajorpumpsexceeding22801/mincapacity.Forsmaller
pumps,includingjockeypumps,theclearancerequiredshouldbe0.75matfrontandback
and0.60matsidesandbetweenpumps.Theheadroomclearanceforallpumphouses
shouldbeminimum2.75m.
5.2
Thepumpcontrolpanelwhichshouldalsobehousedinthepumproombuteasily
accessible,shouldbeofadequatedimensiontoincorporatetripplepoolandneutral(TPN)
switchandhighrupturecapacity(HRC)switchbothofadequatecapacity,selectorswitch
ammeter,voltmeterandphaseindicatinglights,singlephasepreventer,startandstoppush
buttons,automanualswitch,auxiliarycontractorsforinterlocking/sequenceofoperations
andallnecessarygauges,fittingsrequiredtocompletethesystem(thebusbarshouldbeof
copperofappropriatethickness).Thepanelshouldbefloormountedwithpropergrouting
withthefloorandbecompartmentalized.Thegaugethicknessofpanelshouldbe1.8mm.
5.3
Wheredieselpumpisprovided,itshouldhaveaseparatepanel,alsolocatedinthe
samepumproomoradjoiningseparateroom.Thepanelshouldhaveitsseparatebattery,
withbatterychargingdevice,andautomanualchangeoverarrangement.Itshould
incorporateaninterlockingdevicewiththemainpumppanelsothatboththeelectric
pumpandthedieselpumpdonotoperatesimultaneously.Adequateprecautionshouldbe
takentoavoidspillageofdieseltoavoidanyfireexergency.
5.4
Airvesselofadequatecapacityshouldbeinstalledinthepumphouse,withpressure
switchesincorporatedonthedeliveryline.Thereshouldbetwopressureswitchesone
withupperandlowerlimitforjockeypumpandanotheronewithonlyforlowerpressure
limitforthemainpump.Stoppingofmainpumpsshouldbeonlybymanualpushbutton
whichshouldbeprominentlyindicatedonthepumppanel.

5.5
Similarlowerpressurelimitswitchshouldalsobeincorporatedinthedieselpumpto
makethestartautomaticallyatpresetdropinpressure.
6INSTALLATIONOFFIREPUMPS
6.1
Thecapacityofthefirepumpshouldbecarefullychosentomeetthemaximum
requirementfortherisk
2 tobeprotected.Thefirepumpshavebeendividedintothefollowingcapacities:
a.4501/min,
b.9001/min,
c.22801/min,
d.28501/min,and
e.45001/minandforspecialrisks67001/min.
Oftheabove,(a)and(b)arebasicallythepumpstobeinstalledontheterracetofeed
theDownComerSystem.Theotherpumpsaretobehousedinthepumphouse.Thepump
housemaybebelowthelevelofthewatertankorconstructedabovethewatertank
dependingupontheengineeringconveniences.Forfirefightingpurpose,apumphouse
havingthepumpsbelowthewatertankisalwaysdesirable,asthiseliminatesthenecessity
tohavenegativesuctionincorporatingprimingtank,footvalveandotherextravalves,etc.
AllpumpsarerequiredtobestartonAuto,whenthereisadropofpressureinthemains.
Thesearerequiredtobepresetonpredeterminedpressuresuitabletoparticularrisk.
6.2
Ifthepumpiselectricdriven,thecapacityofthepumpvisvisitsrevolutionsper
minutemustmatchwiththeelectricmotorbeingchosenforthesamejob.Electricmotors
requiredtofeedthepumpupto22801/minareusuallyrunningat2900rev/minandthe
pumpsrequiredtomatchthemotorsmustalsorunatthesamerevolutionsperminute.
ThesepumpsareknownasSingleStagePumpsandthesuctionisattheendofthepumpso
thatthesearecalledEndSuctionPumps.Smallcapacitypumps/jockeypumpsarealso
available/requiredtobeusedinmultistagedesign.Thespeedsofthesepumpsaresuitable
for2polemotoror4polemotor.
6.3
Thefirefightingpumpsarealmostinvariablycentrifugaltypeexceptinginsome
typicalcaseswhereverticalturbineorsubmersiblepumpsareinstalled.Afterthecapacityof
thepumpandmotorhasbeencarefullychosen,tomatcheachotherperfectly,installation
ofthepumpsinthepumphouseshouldbedonewithutmostcare.Ashasbeensaidabove,
thepumphouseshallhaveadequatespacestokeepenoughcirculationareawithinthe
pumphouseforthepumpoperatorintimesofemergencyormaintenance.Thepumpand
themotorsarealwayscasesconnectedtogetherbyconnectingcouplersandtheyare

mountedonacommonbaseplatewhichissuppliedbythepumpmanufacturersalongwith
thepump.Thebaseplateshallbeofsufficientlengthandwidthtohousethepumpandthe
motorcomfortably.
6.4
Inthefirststageoftheinstallation,pumpsaretobemountedonaconcrete
foundationhavingminimumgradeofreinforcedconcreteasM15.Thefoundationshallbe
ofadequatethicknessanddimensiondependinguponthetypeofthepumpwhichwillbe
installed.Thethicknessofthefoundationshallbe50mmminimumforsmallpumpsupto
9001/mincapacity,75mmforpumpsupto22801/mincapacityand100mmforbigger
pumpsupto45001/min.Forextraordinarybigpumps,thethicknessmaygoupto150
mm.Thesizeofthefoundationshallcoverthefulllengthandwidthofthepumpand
atleast150mmonthefrontandbackofthepumpand75mmonthesidesasclearance.
ThefoundationshallbedesignedasperIS2974(Part3)andIS2974(Part4).
6.5
Itisrecommendedtoprovideajockeypumptotakecareofsystemlosses.The
capacityofthejockeypumpshallneitherbelessthan3percent(withaminimumof180
1/min)normorethan10percentoftheinstalledpumpingcapacity.
6.6
Eachpumpshallbeprovidedwithapressuregaugeonthedeliverysidebetweenthe
pumpandthenonreturnvalveandamanufacturersplateindicatingthedeliveryhead,
capacityandthenumberofrevolutionsperminute.
6.7
Pumps(otherthanJockeypumps)shouldbeabletodevelopheadofgreaterthan65
percentofratedheadatcapacityof150percentofratedcapacity.Theratedheadfor
verticalturbinepumpswillberatedbowlhead.Theshutoffheadofpumps(otherthan
jockey)shouldnotexceed120percentofratedheadforhorizontalpumpsand140percent
ofratedbowlheadofverticalturbinepumps.
6.8
Eachfireservicepumpshallbeprovidedwithanindependentsuctionpipewithout
anysluiceorcutoffvalvestherein,unlessthepumpissituatedbelowthelevelofthewater
supplyinwhichcasesluiceorcutoffvalvesisessential.WheretheNetPositiveSuction
Head(NPSH)availableatsiteislessthan0.5minexcessoftheactualvaluerequiredat150
percentofthedutypointasperthemanufacturerscurvesorwherethewatersupplyhas
fibrousorequallyobjectionablematterinsuspensionormudand/orsandliabletocause
depositionintheinstallation,suctionpipe(s)shallbeinstalledinajackwell(suctiontank),
fedthroughapipe/pipesofappropriatediafromthemainwatersupply.Atthesupplyend
ofthemajortank,wherethemainsupplysourceisatadistanceexceeding20m,asluiceor
gatevalveshallbeprovided.Fromfirewaterstoragereservoirtwoseparateconnectionsare
takentosuctionheader(fromeachcompartmentoffirewaterstorage.)

Thediameterofthesuctionpipeshallbesuchthattherateofflowofwaterthrough
itdoesnotexceed1.5m/swhenthepumpisdeliveringatitsrateddischarge.If,however,
thepumpissituatedbelowthelevelofitswatersupply,thediameterofthesuction
pipe/headershallbebaseduponarateofflowof2m/s.

6.10
Whenthepumpisabovethelevelofitswatersupply,thereshallbeafootvalveanda
primingarrangement,thelatterconsistingofatank(havingacapacityatleastthreetimes
thatofthesuctionpipeincludingthepumpcasingfromthepumptothefootvalve),
connectedtothedeliverysideofthepumpbyametalpipehavingaminimuminternal
diameterof100mminthecaseofcentrifugalpumpswithastopvalveandanonreturn
valvethereinofthesamesize.Adependableindependentfillingarrangementandalevel
indicatorshallbeprovidedfortheprimingtank.Theprovisionofavacuumgaugeforthe
suctionpipeisrecommended.Wherecircumstancespermit,centrifugalpumpsshallbe
fixedpreferablybelowthelevelofthewatersupply.Ifthepumpisautomaticinaction,it
shallnecessarilybesofixed.
6.11
However,forlightandordinaryhazardoccupanciesiftheprimingarrangementsare
suchastoensurethatthesuctionpipeshallbeautomaticallymaintainedfullofwater
notwithstandingaseriousleakagetherefrom(thepumpbeingautomaticallybroughtinto
actiontoreplenishtheprimingtankshouldthelatterbedrawnuponatagreaterratethan
therateatwhichitisfedfromanyothersource),positivesuctionmaynotbeinsisted.In
suchcases,thecapacityoftheprimingtankneednotexceed4501andthediameterofthe
primingpipeneednotexceed50mm.Eachpumpshallbeprovidedwithanautomaticby
passconnectionandreliefvalvesetbelowtheshutoffpressure.Itshallprovidecirculation
ofsufficientwatertopreventthepumpfromoverheatingwhenoperatingwithclosed
deliveryandnodischarge.Thecirculationreliefvalveshoulddischargeapproximately35
percentofthepumprating.
TestLineEachpumpshallbeprovidedwithtestlineandshutoffvalvefor
individualtestingofpumpswithoutdischargingthesystem.
6.12
Pumpsshallnotbeinstalledintheopen.Thepumproomshallbesolocatedastobe
botheasilyaccessibleandwhereanyfallingmasonryandthelikefromotherbuildings
occasionedbyfireorothercause,cannotdamagethepumproom.Normally,pumprooms
shallbelocated6mawayfromallsurroundingbuildingsandoverheadstructures.Where
thisisnotfeasible,theymaybeattachedtoabuildingprovidedaperfectseperationwall
having4hfireratingisconstructedbetweenthepumproomandtheattachedbuilding,the
roofofthepumproomisofRCCconstructionatleast100mmthickandaccesstothe
pumproomisfromtheoutside.Thepumproomsshallnormallyhavebrick/concretewalls
andnoncombustibleroofwithadequatelighting,ventilationanddrainagearrangements.

Thesubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)supplyingpowertothefirepump(s)shallbe
ofincombustibleconstructionandshallbelocatedatleast6mawayfromallsurrounding
buildings.Wherethisisnotfeasible,alldoorandwindowopeningsofthesurrounding
buildingswithin6mofthesubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)shallbeprotectedbysingle
fireproofdoorsand6mmthickwiredglassesinsteelframeworkrespectively.Likewise,
roofeaves,ifanyofthesurroundingbuildingsfallingwithin6mofthesubstation(s)
and/orD.G.House(s),shallbecutandwallraisedasaparapet.Theaboveprovisionsshall
alsoapplywhenthesubstation(s)andD.G.House(s)arewithin6mofeachother.
Wherethesubstation(s)andD.G.House(s)areattachedtobuildings,afourhour
ratedwallshallbeconstructedtosegregatethesubstation(s)andD.G.House(s).Thisshall
beofRCCconstructionatleast200mmthickorofmasonryconstructionatleast230mm
thick.
6.14
TransformercubiclesinsidethesubstationsshallbeseparatedfromH.T.andL.T.
cubiclesandfromeachotherbywallsofbrick/stone/concreteblocksor355mmthickness
orofRCCof200mmthicknesswithdooropenings,ifany,thereinbeingprotectedby
singlefireproofdoorshaving2hourfireresistance.Thesubstation(s)and/orD.G.
House(s)shallalsobeseperatedfromeachotherasabove.Transformersinstalledoutdoors,
whicharesupplyingpowertofirepump(s)shallalsobelocatedatleast6mawayfromall
surroundingbuildings[includingsubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)].Wherethisisnot
feasible,alldoorandwindowopeningsofthebuilding(s)[includingsubstation(s)and/or
D.G.House(s)within6mofthetransformers]shallbeprotectedbysinglefireproofdoors
and6mmthickwiredglassesinsteelframeworkrespectively.Likewise,roofeavesofthe
building(s)fallingwithin6mofthetransformersshallbecutandwallraisedasaparapet.
Blastwallsofbricks/stone/concreteblocksof355mmthicknessorofRCCof200mm
thicknessshallbeconstructedbetweentransformersandthesewallsshallbeextended
horizontally600mmbeyondtheextremitiesofthetransformersandvertically600mm
abovethehighestpointofthetransformers.
6.15
Theelectricsupplytothepumpset(s)shallbeentirelyindependentofallother
equipmentinthepremises,thatis,evenwhenthepowerthroughouttheentirepremisesis
switchedoff,thesupplyofthepumpshallcontinuetobeavailableuninterrupted.Thiscan
beachievedbytakingtheconnectionforthepump(s)fromtheincomingsideofthemain
L.T.Breaker.However,incaseswheretwoormoretransformersand/orsourcesofsupply
areconnectedtoacommonbusbarorwherethereisprovisionofa
4 buscouplerbetweenthebusbarsections,theconnectionmaybetakenthroughthe
busbars.
6.16FireExtinguisher
ThepumproomshouldbeprotectedbyappropriatetypeofextinguisherseitherC02
orDCP.Ifthepumpsareinbasement,itisdesirabletohavethepumpsprotectedby
automaticsprinklersystem.

7MAINTENANCE
7.1
Thefirepumpshallbemaintainedregularlyandproperly.Therefore,itisabsolutely
essentialthatsomeoneresponsiblepersonshouldbegiventhechargeofensuringthatthe
firepumpsareproperlymaintained.
7.2
Thefollowingmaintenancescheduleshallbemaintained.
7.2.1
Afterthefirefightingpumphasbeencommissionedandthesystemhasbeentaken
overbytestingitaccordingtotheperformanceparameterslaiddownforthefirepump,
thisshouldberecordedinamaintenanceregister,tobekeptinthepumphouse.Theinitial
testshouldshowthefollowing:
a.Flowobtainedat7kgf/cm2,
b.Flowobtainedat4.5kgf/cm2(65percentof7kg),and
c.Pressuregaugerecordingat120percentof7kg.
7.3
Afterthisinitialtakeoverofthepump,thefollowingshallbetheroutine
maintenanceschedule.
7.3.1DailyCheck
a.TestingoftheJockeyPump
Testthejockeypumpdailybyopeningthedeliveryvalve/hosereelveryslightly
toallowthepressuretodropuptothepresetlevel.Notethetimingtakenbythe
jockeypumptorestorethepressureautomaticallybycutoffswitch.
b.MainPump
Themainpumpshallbetesteddailyatleastfor5min.Releasethesystem
pressurebyopeningthehydrantvalvepartially.Thejockeypumpwillcomein
operation.Openthevalvefullywhenfurtherdropinpressurewhichwillallowthe
mainpumptostartautomatically.Closethedeliveryoutletandallowthepumptorun
for5mineverymorning.
c.Checkthepumpglands,packings,etc,andreplacethedamagedglandforpacking
wheneverfounddamagedorwornout.
7.3.2WeeklyCheck
a.Checkbearingsgreasecutonceaweekandlubricateasneeded.
b.Cleaningofstartercontactseveryweek.
c.Checktheinsulationresistanceofpumpmotorcircuiteveryweek.

d.Checktheenginefueloiltankandensurethatthisisofappropriategradeand
quality.
e.Checkthequantityoffueloilinthetank.Thisshouldbesufficientfor4hrunning
withoutreplenishment.Checkthesludgeandsedimenttrapasprovidedinthe
auxiliaryequipmentlist.Checktheinspectionandcleaninghole,checkthe
battery/batteriesrequiredforstartingoftheengineandensurethatthesearein
satisfactorycondition.Alsocheckthebatterychargingarrangementbytrickier
charger.
Foreverycoldareas,spaceheatingisnecessarytokeeptheenginein
reasonablywarmconditionforimmediatestarting,Ifso,ensurethattheroom
heatingarrangementisworkingsatisfactory.
f.Startingdieselengineonceeveryweekandrunitfor10min.Thestartingshouldbe
testedbyswitchingoffthecurrentandallowingsystempressuretodropuptothe
presetlevelfordieselengine.Interlockarrangementwithpowersupplyshouldbe
restored.
g.Checkalignmentofpumpmotors,nuts,bolts,couplings,couplingguard,etc,once
everyweekafterthepumphasrunforcontinuous15min.
7.3.3
InspectionshallbecarriedoutaspertherequirementsgiveninIS1710,IS5120,IS
6070andIS9137.
7.4
Manufacturersshallprovidealistoffastmovingspares.
