The Art of Nudity and Nakedness

Nude

The sculpture was entitled Lady with Cherubs. I saw this sculpture on August 20, 2016
with my girlfriend at the national museum. The art piece was made by Isabelo Tampinco Y.
Lacandola back in 1920. This piece of art is being displayed at National Museum in Manila.
Isabelo Tampinco (19 November 1850 30 January 1933) was a Filipino sculptor known for his
woodcarvings for churches, most notably the Church of San Ignacio in Intramuros: altar, the
pillars, the ceilings and the other intricate portions of the church; public edifices; and homes.
Specific examples of his work were polychrome wood figures of saints and angels.

Among his works were Manila Cathedral's famous facade, the high relief on Santo
Domingo Church's molave door, the main altar of the Laoag Cathedral, and woodcarvings in San
Agustin Church. Out of a desire to create a uniquely Filipino style, he incorporated native flora
and fauna designs in his sinuous openwork and Art Noveau whiplash outlines style of
woodcarving. Among his native motifs were the banahaw, areca palm, and bamboo. The said
detail became known as Tampinco frames.

A Chinese mestizo, he was born in Binondo, Manila on 19 November 1850. He was the
son of Tampinco y delos Reyes and Maria Justa de Lacandola. He apprenticed in the carving
shops of Binondo and Santa Cruz districts. At age 15, he enrolled at the Academia de Dibujo y
Pintura, Manilas art academy, and studied sculpture under Agustin Saez and Lorenzo Rocha. He
was hailed as one of the most outstanding sculptors of his time and was admired by Jose Rizal,
who was his classmate in a modeling class at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He was able to
start his career in his 20s. His works dated as early as 1870.
Tampinco was first married to Victoria Jocson and later, to Carmen Angeles. He had a son
with Jocson named Angel and another son with Angeles named Vidal. Angel and Vidal
eventually inherited Isabelo's skills, talent, and passion for art. Angel pursued architecture and
design, while Vidal continued the family business when Isabelo died on 30 January 1933.

When I saw this sculpture, I know that this is the perfect one that I want in nude sculpture
or painting. And I want to analyze this nude sculpture because I liked how the artist sculpted the
female with an aura like a model, a girl model also the style of the pose of the sculpture. It looks
like simple for others but for me it is elegant, the sculpture doesnt showcase a lot; it is just a girl
standing up like an angel. The color is also simple, it is just plain white.

The Philippine National Museum is filled with unique pieces of art that reflects what is
important to the Filipinos and encapsulates a time that the piece of work is trying to preserve;
whether it is the colonization of Philippines by Spain, Japan, or the United States the pieces are a
stark reminder of our past, and a testimony of our inevitable future. The Museum itself is a
beautiful piece of art, the architecture and figures that watch you from above as you walk
through some of its halls makes you feel small in the presence of concepts, ideas and values that
has taken physical form in the rooms. Famous artists include the sculpture Isabelo Tampinco Y
Lacandola, and oil painters such as Diosdado Lorenzo, and Dominador Castaneda. In this blog I
will focus on three of my most favorite works of art, for those of you who are interested in art;
but do not know where to begin I would like to be the person to help introduce you into the
beautiful world of unquantifiable beauty.

Lastly I want to be talking about a sculpture known as Lady with Cherubs sculpted by
Isabelo Tampinco Y Lacandola. I chose this sculpture because it is one of the first works you
would see when you are at the ground floor and it reminded me somewhat of those sculptures
seen in Greece. The woman sculpted does not have the features of a Filipina and so I assumed
that it was of a Caucasian. I liked this sculpture and thought it would be nice to talk about was
how the portrayal of the woman was done, it stuck close to the themes during those sculptures
created during the renaissance where it had religious significance and portrayed a woman in her
nude as a feeling of acceptance towards her own body, it shows a woman with no shame of how
God has created her and gives the audience the feeling of honesty with nothing to hide. I liked
how the artist tried to imitate the type of soft fabric that has covered her reproductive organ as a
thin veil and seems to be as if it is lightweight because of the way its sculpted to look as if it is a
real fabric with some crease. This particular sculpture was made using concrete and was finished
between 19201930.

Naked

The painting was entitled Broken vows. I saw this painting last August 20, 2016 at
national museum too. The painting is so beautiful and I saw already that this is a fit painting that
I need to put in naked painting. It was done by Salvacion Lim Higgins. Salvacion Lim was born
in Manila in 1920 and raised by an artistic family. Her father was a painter. Her mother designed
clothes and ternos. So at a young age she developed her passion for art and creation. She would
sketch many drawings in her schoolbooks and she would dress smart even at home.
She graduated with a degree in fine arts and major in painting from the University of
Santo Tomas. She went to New York as well as Paris for further studies in fashion design.
Its a great time to swing by the National Museum. For history buffs, War and Dissent
looks at the Philippine American War from 1898 to 1915 and examines both sides of the conflict
in meticulous detail. For fashionistas, the Slim Retrospective offers a rare glimpse of Salvacion
Lim Higgins exquisite creations from the 1950s to the 1990s. And for us art addicts, the
Philippine Art Awards exhibit of winners start today.
In 1948 she opened The House of Slim Young Pinoy Fashion website article on Slim's
Fashion School "Slim" being a contraction of her maiden name. She became known for her
collections which featured riotous color and dramatic silhouettes, as well as lavish embroidery
and beadwork.
In 1964 she daringly reinvented the Maria Clara by creating an all black and white
version for the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, which brought Sir Cecile
Beaton, the legendary photography and fashion designer, backstage at the New York World's Fair
to admire the costumes up close.
A true artist, Slim insisted on having total freedom in dressing up her clients. She
deconstructed classic images of Spanish painters Goya and Velasquez. She dressed her clients in
space-age jumpsuits. When models were not available, she insisted on draping a mannequin with
her dress forms while facing a full-length mirror. She claimed that "You can create a better, more
balanced line if you stand behind the dress and face the mirror. You will also see the dress from
the wearer's point of view."
She traveled to Paris, searching for inspiration, attending more than 27 couture shows.
She sourced the most exotic material for her creations, including pinhead-sized sequins from
France, Swiss raffia, branch corals, or Osmea pearls. She was a perfectionist and was known for
her temper when her clothes did not measure up to her standard.
For 5 decades she enthralled Manila's high society with her creations. For Linda Garcia
Campos, she created an off-white wedding terno with a 15-meter train embroidered in silk floss
cording, nacre straw trimmed with pearls and Aurora Borealis stones. For Chona Kasten she
designed a white silk dress with an asymmetrical pouf and a satin train embroidered with silver
and white corded loops. She dressed Maribel Aboitiz in a black velvet gown trimmed
dramatically with white lace, alternating with a black draping in bows.
She remained in her creative force even until the late 1980s when she was stricken with
cancer. In 1990 she created her last collection on the occasion on the Manila Fashion Designers
Awards presentation. She died before it could be completed. She was posthumously received into
the MFDA Hall of Fame.
In my analysis it is naked, as I can see there are male and female who is suffering in the
pain of their wound, because of the abused of the foreign country to the poor people. The
painting was so elegant and it is beautiful. Thomasian artists are always the best painters.
Nude versus naked they are both mean that the human body is without clothes and
covering, but nude is powerful educated art and naked is an unclothed, uncomfortable, helpless
condition. Let me sum it up a bit. If a person is naked, it means that they are not wearing any
clothes and they are exposed in such a way that they feel sexually exposed, embarrassed,
exploited, helpless or defenseless. Naked is a deprivation of covering and not a desirable
condition to find oneself. And for nude, let me get this right. If a person is nude, they are not
wearing any clothes, but they are in a location or condition where they feel very comfortable.
Being nude is natural and therefore a nude body is naturally beautiful so there is no reason for
embarrassment.
Naked versus nude may seem like a small, irrelevant distinction in a debate over the
propriety of the photograph's sale. But those two words represent important and very different
ways not only in how we look at an image but how we judge its value and the value of those
involved in its creation. Nude is by and large used only to refer to the absence of clothing or any
covering in general. Naked, on the other hand, has far wider connotations than nude.
