GENERAL PHYSICS B (PH 1038)

QUIZ 2

Please show your SOLUTIONS in the answer sheet neatly.

1. A 3-kg plank of length L = 2 m is pivoted freely at one end and has a rope attached to the other
end, as shown in Figure 1. The rope is attached to the wall at a distance h = 0.8 m. Above the
pivot and the rod is at an angle = 20o below the horizontal. Find: (a) the tension in the rope; (b)
the horizontal and vertical forces exerted by the pivot.

2. A particle of mass m = 0.5-kg moving at speed u = 4m/s strikes a dumbbell consisting of two
blocks of equal mass M = 1-kg separated by a massless rod of length 2 m (Figure 2). The
dumbbell and the particle are free to slide on a horizontal surface. Find: (a) the speed of the
center of mass of the system after the particle stick to one of the blocks; (b) the angular velocity
of the system about the center of mass.

3. A ship sails along the equator at speed v relative to the surface. A particle of mass m is
suspended on a spring scale. Show that when the ship makes a U-turn the reading change by
4mv, where is the angular velocity of the earth.

4. Show that the deflection of a plumb line from the true vertical (radial line) at latitude is given
2 R sin2
sin =
by 2g , where << (Figure 3).
