A new era for antibiotics - maybe

A newly discovered compound with antibiotic properties is causing excitement in scientific

circles not only because it is promising to be one of the most powerful antibiotics yet discovered
but its method of discovery is promising even more products.
But first a bit of background.
Historical records from the ancient Egyptians and Greeks indicate that we have been
attempting to cure infections with mixtures prepared from plants and moulds for over 2000 years.
But these concoctions were largely based on medicinal folklore and varied enormously in their
effectiveness.
Another former approach was to use toxic substances like arsenic in small doses in the belief
that it cured the disease before it killed the patient.
It was not until the discovery of arsphenamine, first synthesised in 1907 and used to treat
syphilis that the modern era of antimicrobials began to truly make an impact.
Then Alexander Fleming made his accidental discovery of Penicillin from a mould in 1928 A smartwatch controlling the BMW i3 with ActiveAssist (left) and an Oculus VR Inc. virtual reality
