SMK Wisukhihotu annual Charity Run for 2016 was held on 18th September. The
event was originally scheduled to start at 6.30 a.m. but the flag-off only took place at
7 a.m. due to the rain. Like the past years, the run started and ended at the school
field.

The purpose of this year's Charity Run is to raise funds for the local orphanage.
Participants were charged a RM15 registration fee that includes some mineral water
and a t-shirt.

The entire route of the run was 10.5 kilometres. A total of 578 students throughout
the school took part in the event. Nur Shahirah from Form 5BD came out first,
followed by Kudakoon Lim from 5A, second and Lim Bo Lui from 4D, third. The
winners were presented with medals and hampers by the President of the Parent
Teacher Association, Datuk Wie Caya Lu.

While the event was successfully completed, there were some incidents that
occurred during the run. Two participants lost their belongings. Both of them left
their bags at the side of the field despite being repeatedly reminded by the
organisers not to do so. Participants were advised to leave their belongings in the
hall next to the field where there were students on duty. Fortunately, they only lost
small amounts of money and some snacks.

Apart from that, some participants also sustained minor injuries. This was due to the
fact that they did not do warm-up exercise before running. As a result, they suffered
cramps halfway through the run. They were immediately attended to by the medical
team on standby and recovered after a short rest.

From this year's event, it is clear that there are still room for improvement in the
organisation of this event. For example, more refreshment stands should be made
available throughout the course of the run. This will ensure that participants are well
hydrated while running. Besides, more volunteers should be brought in to control
and direct traffic where the route meets with the main street. This will ensure the
safety of the participants as well as the safety of road users passing by the area.

Dear Sir,

Unsatisfactory School Canteen

On behalf of the students of 5 Wie Wie, I would like to lodge a complaint about the
unsatisfactory of our school canteen.

2. First and foremost, the food served is not covered and many flies can be seen
hovering over the food. This may lead to food poisoning. Moreover, the canteen also
serves stale food. The nasi lemak turns bad by the time the upper forms have their
recess. Last week, a few of us had diarrhoea after consuming food from the canteen.

3. Apart from that, the food is also too expensive. A small plate of fried noodles
costs RM1.50 and many poor students cannot afford it. Besides that, the canteen
serves the same menu daily. The students are bored with fried rice and fried
noodles every day.

4. Another complaint is that the cups and plates are oily and not washed properly.
The workers are also not appropriately attired although they have been told to wear
aprons and caps. Moreover, these workers are rude to students. They shout at us
and use foul language whenever they get angry. They also do not clear the dustbins
and rubbish daily. This is very unhygienic. As a result, there is a foul stench
whenever we eat in the canteen.

5. Thus, we would like to suggest that the school authorities make stringent checks
on the canteen daily or weekly. They should also ensure that the canteen serves a
variety of food at a reasonable price. We would like to appeal to your sense of
fairness and hope prompt action will be taken regarding these matters.

Dear Sir,

Complaint Regarding Stray Dogs In The Area

I, as the secretary of the Residents' Association of Taman Perdana, would like to make a
complaint on behalf of the residents of Taman Perdana about the presence of stray dogs in our
area and seek a quick solution to our problem.

2. Recently, there has been a sudden increase in the population of stray dogs in our
neighbourhood. Vicious-looking dogs roam the neighbourhood in packs and this phenomenon is
causing terror to spread amongst the residents.

3. It is not only the sight of the dogs that are frightening the people, but also the reported cases of
residents being bitten and chased. Five people, so far, have been attacked by the stray dogs and
three are currently in the hospital for treatment. Some of the dogs look infected and diseased and I
fear they may spread terrible diseases like rabies to the residents.

4. Aside from bodily harm, the stray dogs also ruin the cleanliness and neatness of Taman
Perdana. The hungry wild dogs frequently mess up the rubbish in the rubbish bins by knocking
them over and tearing the plastic bags used to hold the trash. Not only is it making the roads and
alleys dirty and smelly, but such occurrences also attract flies, rats and other pests. Lastly, the
children are afraid to use the playground facilities for fear of being attacked. The stray dogs
constantly hang around the playground like they are seeking victims.

5. I sincerely hope that you will consider our problem seriously and that the Town Council will
soon provide us with relief. I am grateful for your attention in reading this letter.

Dear Sir,

Uncollected Rubbish and Clogged Drains

I am writing this letter is to attract your attention to the above title. As the representative of the
community, I am calling to tell you that the 300 odd residents living in Taman Wie Handsome are
extremely unhappy about the lackadaisical attitude of the local town council towards the
uncollected rubbish and clogged drains in our area.

2. The rubbish in our area has not been collected for more than a week. The rubbish is
supposed to be collected on alternate days but this has not been the case. The town council
workers collect the rubbish according to their own whims and fancies. The uncollected garbage
has attracted not only flies and mosquitoes but also wild dogs which had attacked the residents on
several occasions. These stray animals also scatter the rubbish and make the roads dirty and
smelly. As a result, residents have to bear the discomfort of stench from the garbage and risk their
health.

3. We are also disappointed with the town council workers for not clearing the clogged drains
which are filled with rubbish. The drains would usually overflow when there is heavy rain and the
rubbish would then flow into the compounds of our houses. Besides, putting up with the
unbearable stench emitted from them, the residents have to spend hours cleaning their
compounds of rotten vegetables, food leftovers and other rubbish.

4. Due to dengue outbreak recently, we are really concerned about the residents health
especially the children. Fogging service also was not done accordingly to the schedule. The
fogging authority only did their job whenever a case of dengue aroused. They even fogging the
neighbourhood late at night that caused us to leave the residents. They need to consider the
residents who have babies and also to those who need to wake up early in the morning for work.
The fogging also caused the people to have breathing problem when we were not told the exact
time of fogging.

5. We have made numerous appeals to the Municipal Council to look into our complaints but
to no avail. We have been putting up with this predicament for more than a week. We hope the
health authorities would do something to check these health hazards.

A very good morning to our beloved principal, Encik Wi Kaya Wo, teachers, boys and girls.

First and foremost, I wish to thank the Principal for granting me permission to speak at this
morning's assembly. The topic of my talk is 'How to Improve Your English'. This talk is also an
appropriate introduction to our English Language Week which begins today.

All of you know the importance of English. It is the language of knowledge, international
communication and trade. I know that most of you want to improve your English but are not sure
how to go about it. I am going to tell you how to do it. I know the methods work because they have
worked for me.

The very first thing you have to do is to read more. Read newspapers, books and magazines.
There is no other way that is more effective than reading. There are no short-cuts to mastering the
English Language. You have to read more and you have to do it for some time before you can see
the results.

You can also attend English tuition classes. The more time you spend studying the language, the
better you will be. At such classes, you will be taught grammar, sentence construction, common
errors and so on. All this will improve your understanding of English.

Studying how to write English is not enough. You have to learn how to speak it. In fact, when you
go for job interviews or start working, the ability to speak English is very important. If you cannot
converse with the interviews in English, you will probably not be given the job. You will likely have
to speak to your boss in English or you may have to conduct meetings in English. You may also
have to speak to potential clients or customers in English. If you cannot speak English well, it will
be a very big disadvantage. When you first start to speak English, you will surely make mistakes.
Never mind, carry on doing it and one day you will find that you can speak English very fluently. As
the saying goes, Practice makes perfect.

Another way to improve your English is to correspond with English pen-pals. If you correspond
with people who are not native speakers of the language, you may learn wrong English from them.
So, the best way to avoid learning bad English is to learn it from the native speakers themselves.

An interesting way to learn English is to go and see English films. From the films you can learn
how the language is spoken, the ways English words are pronounced and the situations in which
certain words, phrases or sentences are used. At the same time, you would be enjoying the films.

Listening to English programmes over the radio is also a very effective way of learning English. As
the English on our local stations may be suspect, tune in to the BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation) which has impeccable English. In fact, one very famous Oscar-winning American
actor learnt his English in the same way. At first, he spoke English like an uneducated man but
after months of listening to the BBC, he spoke like a graduate from one of the top British
universities.

The next method is like going to the cinema to see English films. However, instead of going to the
cinema, you do it at home. You can watch English films on television. Try not to look at the
subtitles at all. Try to catch what the actors and actresses are saying. It will be difficult at first but
you will be able to do it with more practice.
A very bold but guide effective way of learning English is to act in English plays. Join the school
drama society or an amateur acting club. When you act in a play, you have to memorise your lines
and give life to them. I cannot think of a more effective way of learning English than this because
the English you have memorised will stay with you forever.

You can also take part in elocution contests. Writing the speech you have to deliver, memorising it
and then delivering it will really improve your English. You will learn not only how to write English
but also how to speak it.

Taking part in debates is also a very good method of improving your English but your English must
already be quite good before you can do it. This is very different from taking part in dramas or
elocution contests where you just have to memorise what you have to say. In debates, you have to
attack or rebut the points put forward by your opponents. There is no way you can prepare
beforehand what you want to say. You have to do everything on the spur of the moment. That
takes quite a good command of the language. So, take part in debates only when your English is
up to standard.

One very important thing you must do if you want to be very good at English is always to check the
meanings of words that you do not know in a good dictionary. Many students are too lazy to do
this. They only try to guess the meanings of the words. This will not do for almost a hundred times
out of a hundred, they will guess the meaning wrongly. The dictionary will give you the exact
meanings. In the beginning, you may have to check the meanings of almost every word. However,
when your vocabulary improves, you will have to check the meanings of fewer and fewer words.

Another very important thing is you have to correct the pronunciation of many of your words. You
have heard many words pronounced wrongly by many people and you are pronouncing them the
same way they do. You may think that just because many people pronounce the words that way,
the pronunciation must be correct. This is not true. Many words are wrongly pronounced. A few
examples are 'deposit', divorce', 'hostel', development' and preservative'. The de' in 'deposit' is
pronounced as 'di' and not dep'. The di' in divorce' is pronounced as di and not dai. The tel' in
'hostel' is pronounced as 'ti' and not 'tell'. The correct pronunciation for the de in development is
'di' and not 'dare'. The 'pre' in preservative is actually pronounced as pri and not prare

The most commonly mispronounced letter is 'O'. It is seldom pronounced oh but rather eh'. The
dictionary will show you how to pronounce the letter O. For example, 'police' is not pronounced
'polis' but rather pelis. 'Consider' is not pronounced 'konside' but rather 'kenside'. The word
monopoly is frequently mispronounced. It is not monopoli but rather menopeli. 'Coconut' is not
'kokonat' but rather 'kokenat'. Remember that if a word has only one 'O', it is seldom pronounced
as 'oh', and no matter how many 'O's' a word has in its middle part, only one of them is
pronounced as oh. However, if the letterO is at the beginning of a word such as 'oppose' and
object, it is usually pronounced as oh.

Get someone to teach you the pronunciation symbols or learn them yourself. After that check the
pronunciation of every word before you use it in your speech.

I have given you a few ways in which you can improve your English. You may know other ways.
Use them to improve your English. It is for your own good and the good of the country.

An Alarming Cases of Snatch Thefts

Snatch thefts are almost daily occurrences and women are the victims. Many of
them have been injured while trying to fight off the snatch thieves. Many of them
were pulled to the ground. Such victims suffered bruises, cuts and knocks. Some
victims on motorcycles had fallen when the snatch thieves pushed them to make
them fall. While the victims lay stunned or unconscious on the roads, the snatch
thieves grabbed their purses or bags and then scooted off on their motorcycles.
There was one case in which a young woman was carrying her two-year-old daughter in the front
basket of her motorcycle. Two snatch thieves came from behind and pushed her. She lost her
balance and fell off her machine. Her child riding in her front basket was instantly killed by her fall.
I have some suggestions on how snatch thefts can be reduced.

First of all, women should try to wear clothes with pockets where they can keep their purses.
Usually women wear clothes with no pockets and so are forced to carry handbags to keep their
purses. Wear pants which have pockets tor you to keep your purse. In this way, snatch thieves
cannot rob you. That is also the reason why men do not become the victims of snatch thieves.

Second, do not flash money around. Some snatch thieves may be there and they will notice you.
Then they will make you their victim when the opportunity arises. So, try not to show that you are
carrying a lot of money with you.

Third, do not carry too much cash with you. Just carry the amount you need to make your
purchases. In this way, even if your purse is snatched, you will not lose much money.

Usually a snatch victim suffers a lot of inconvenience because she keeps her identity card and
driving licence together with her money in her purse. So, when her purse is snatched, she loses
not only her money but her identity card and driving licence as well. She may not have lost much
money but losing her identity card and driving licence is very inconvenient. A police report has to
be made, fines have to be paid and a new identity card and a new driving licence have to be made.
This involves a lot of time, money and inconvenience. So, I would advise women who carry
handbags with their purses inside to keep their identity cards and driving licences in some other
place. They may keep these items in a pocket in their clothes or in the glove compartment of their
cars.

If you need to carry a handbag, do not carry one with long straps. The long straps make it easy for
thieves to snatch your handbags. The long straps are also dangerous because you may be
dragged along the road if the thieves work from a motorcycle. If you are riding on a motorcycle,
you may fall off your machine when your handbag is snatched. If you are carrying a handbag, grab
it close to your body. This makes it more difficult for snatch thieves to work.

Many women who ride motorcycles put their handbags in the baskets in the front part of their
motorcycles. This is inviting snatch thieves to steal your handbags. They can consider themselves
lucky if the thieves just grab their handbags and speed off on their motorcycles because the
snatch thieves may push them so that they fall from their machines. If this happens, they will not
only lose their handbags, but they may suffer serious injuries or even lose their lives.

My suggestions will reduce snatch thefts. I hope that they will be adopted by the women who may
be potential victims of snatch thieves.
