Preparation

After you have opened the carton take a moment to consider where to place the ZX-
800. While the ZX-800 has been designed to work flawlessly in the grain elevator
environment, there are a few things that must be considered before setting up the ZX-
800.

1. Electrical requirements

For best operation and reliability of the analysis the ZX-800 should have a clean
independent electrical line.

To prevent problems caused by electrical surges the ZX-800 should be plugged

into a power suppressor or UPS (uninterruptable power supply).

2. The ZX-800 should be placed on-line on a flat surface with enough room for
filling the sample cup with grain for analysis (and the optional printer if
purchased). Approximately three feet of counter space should be sufficient.

3. The ZX-800 should not be exposed to very wet conditions. Do not place on the
same counter with vibrating machinery. Do not place in direct sunlight.

4. The ZX-800 was preset for the voltage in your country. To check the voltage
setting, please look at the voltage ring on the back of the analyzer. There should
be a notch in the ring next to the voltage for your location. If the ring is set
incorrectly, turn the ring so the notch is toward the voltage for your country.
Incorrect voltage set-up can damage the ZX-800. See section VOLTAGE
RING, page 9 before changing voltage.

The ZX-800 is designed to be left on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While at rest the
ZX-800 Whole Grain Analyzer consumes about the same electricity as a standard 60
watt light bulb. If it cannot be left on, allow 60 minutes warm up time before running the
first sample.

5

16
Running the AutoBIAS Sample

When you turn the instrument on each day, it will require you to run an AutoBIAS
sample in each product you use.* The autobias feature uses the latest NIR technology
to prevent the ZX-800 from drifting out of calibration.

Insert the AutoBIAS sample provided with your instrument. The instrument will read the
sample, just like a regular sample, and adjust the bias accordingly. (See also
Analyzing a Grain Sample on page 19.) Write down the amount of the bias adjustment
for each constituent on a photocopy of the following chart. (You can select to run an
AutoBIAS at any time, in addition to the daily prompt. On the ZX-800, make sure you
are in the product for the bias you want to adjust. Press CAL on the instruments
keypad. Select AutoBIAS from the Calibrations menu.)

* If you are unable to run the AutoBIAS sample for some reason, you can escape the daily prompt by pressing 8 8 1 . Do not
make a habit of ignoring the prompt, however. If you have lost the AutoBIAS sample, contact Zeltex for a replacement.

You are now ready to begin reading samples in the adjusted product!

necessary to adjust the bias or slope. These corrections can help fine tune the
instrument.

1) Bias Adjustment (shifts all readings up or down the same amount)

2) Slope Adjustment (changes the angle of prediction line to agree with the new lab
results).

See examples A through D on page 21

NOTE: Before attempting a slope adjustment please contact Zeltex for

assistance at 301-791-7080 or fax 301-733-9398.

The ZX-800, permits bias and slope correction, and allows full custom calibration, using
the optional calibration software and RS232 cable.

NOTE: You have to press to see the second half of this menu.

Each of these items allow you to adjust the criteria that are used to measure that
product you have currently selected.

1: Group - There are four different groups in the unit. The group name has
no meaning for the type of product that is actually run. These groups are
settings of energy. You are able to have four different energy settings for
different products within the ZX-800. These are preset at the factory and
cannot be adjusted in the field.

NEVER CHANGE GROUP ONCE THE

PRODUCT IS CALIBRATED. IF YOU CHANGE
THE GROUP YOU WILL LOSE CALIBRATION.
2: Product Name - Allows you to enter a name of the product. You must
highlight the name, letter, number, or symbol and press Select . Once
you have typed in the name, go to the "END" selection. Highlight and
press Select. It will exit and save the name you have entered. Always
answer Yes to Time/Date stamp? and it will be saved in the permanent
record with the ZX-800.

3: Cal Name - You can set 1 through 4 for different constituent names. This
will include any name you want: protein, moisture, oil, fat, etc. You enter
the information by highlighting the correct letter and pressing Select until
the whole name is entered. Highlight "END" and press Select.

4: Unit - It is recommended you put in the percent sign so the readout will
say for example 14.1% instead of just 14.1. You can also enter Parts per
million or any other notation you would prefer.

5: Unit Temperature - The ZX-800 was calibrated with this temperature

range. Please note Zeltex uses a temperature range of 10C through
45C for the calibration. Zeltex recommends that all field calibrations use
the same range. Once you have entered the temperature limits, if a
reading is out of the temperature limits the ZX-800 will display "ERROR"
on unit temperature.

26
6: Sample Temperature - The ZX-800 was calibrated at this range of sample
temperatures. Zeltex recommends during calibration a range of -20C to
+50C. This is a very wide temperature range and can be done on the ZX-
800. Please note if the sample is either colder or hotter than the
temperature range to which it is set, an error warning, SAMPLE
TEMPERATURE OUT OF RANGE, will be displayed.

7: Constants - Constants are entered either manually from the reduction, or

with the aid of a computer and the Instrument Edit program. All constants
from Zeltex are inserted in your ZX-800 User's Manual and can be re-
entered at this setting if they ever get lost. Please note all constants
information is backed-up by lithium battery in case there is a power
failure. You should not have to re-enter constants once they have been
entered. NOTE: Constants are entered in Scientific notation; for example
1,435.82 would be 1.43582 E03.

8: Data Limits - The calibration range. The high value and low value for each
constituent during calibration. These limits have been set in the ZX-800
for each product. If your reading exceeds the high or low limit, the ZX-800
will display "Warning, too high or too low."

9: SLOPE & BIAS - Allows you to do a slope & bias adjustment automatically
in the unit. NOTE: Any work in this mode must be time/date stamped for
memory and can affect the accuracy of the ZX-800. See page 22,
Adjusting the Slope & Bias.

Once you have completed work in the Edit Constants, press and return to the Edit
Calibration Menu.

3: Add Calibration - If you want to add a calibration select the Group. Define the
product name and all items for adding a brand new calibration. At the end the
ZX-800 will ask you if you want to save it. Make sure you do not save it over an
existing calibration, thus wiping out the existing calibration. Once you have
completed a calibration press exit to return.

4: Delete Calibration - If the product that has been calibrated is no longer going to
be tested you can delete the old calibration. However, once you have deleted it
all information is lost from the ZX-800. It is always best to keep the calibration
unless you have run out of room on the ZX-800.
Note: For more details on groupings and setting up calibrations, consult your
Calibration Manual. This manual has more information on how to adjust groups and so
forth.

5: Print Status - Prints the status of the calibration that is currently activated. This
includes all K values, ranges and other information. Print Status requires a
printer and will lock up the ZX-800 if a printer is not attached.
27
28
Entering a New Calibration

5) Enter product name.

6) Once product name has been entered you must enter the constituent names.
The constituent names are referred to as CAL 1 - CAL 4 (Protein, Moisture, etc.)

7) After you have entered the Cal name you must enter the units in which the
constituent is measured to be displayed with the results. Most users use the %
sign.

8) Once you have entered the first constituent name and units you must continue
through all 4 CAL names. If no name is needed, enter END and exit out of each
one. Note: If you hold the key, you will get to END quickly.

9) Optical Power - Enter in power for the individual wavelengths.

10) Gain - signal boost from the detector.

11) Once all 4 constituent names and units are entered, the ZX-800 will ask you for
the unit temperature limits. This is the limit for the ambient temperature used in
the calibration. Zeltex recommends you calibrate between 10C and 45C by
chilling and warming the instrument with ice packs and heating pads during
calibration.

12) Once the temperature limits have been entered for ambient, sample temperature
limits must also be entered. This is the limits of the sample temperatures you
used during calibration. The ZX-800 is able to read as high as 60C and as low
as -20C. Enter the highest and lowest sample temperatures used during the
calibration. Note: If you are using a negative temperature, you must use the
"" (negative key) prior to entering in the temperature.

29
13) The ZX-800 will now ask you for the constants. The constants are entered in
scientific notation. They must be typed in correctly: Double-check them to
make sure they are correct.

14) After the constants are entered, the ZX-800 will ask for upper and lower data
limits. This is the range of the calibration. The Histogram Program will tell you
the data limits of the calibration.

15) Repeat steps 13 through 14 for all four calibrations.

16) After all the data has been entered for a new calibration the ZX-800 will ask you
for the destination. BE CAREFUL. DO NOT WRITE OVER AN EXISTING
CALIBRATION. Scroll to a vacant product and press .

17) The screen returns to Edit Calibration.

18) Press again and you are ready to analyze the product.

The sample analysis exceeds the data limit range.

4. Too Light or Too Dark.

This is normally caused by not having the correct sample in the ZX-800 or
by leaving the hood open during measurement.

Trouble-Shooting

The ZX-800 is designed to be as trouble-free as possible. It uses near-infrared

emitting diodes and fixed narrow band pass filters to avoid the problem of light bulbs
and moving optics. However, if you experience any of the following problems, try these
suggested solutions.

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

The ZX-800 will not turn on. 1. Make sure the ZX-800 is plugged into the
wall.

2. Check the voltage setting: Is it set to the

correct voltage?

3. Is the switch turned on?

4. Check the 3 amp fuse.

5. Check the power outlet: Is it working

correctly?

6. Contact Zeltex.
The ZX-800 does not 1. Do you have the optional software and
communicate with the IBM RS232 cable?
computer.
2. In the Options menu, make sure the ZX-800
is set for PC2 for the Calibration Software or
PC1 for ZX-800 Instrument Edit.

3. Check the RS232 cable to make sure you

are connected to the correct comport on
your computer (if available).

4. Try the other comport on the computer.

5. Make sure the switch on the back of the ZX-

800 is set to "S" if you have a 286 or higher
IBM computer.

6. Try a different RS232 cable.

7. Contact Zeltex.

31
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Poor repeatability 1. Make sure the cup is full to the top.

2. Make sure you are using the correct cup for

the product you have chosen.

3. Run the same sample 5 times without

removing the cup, just pressing MEASURE.
Is the repeatability still poor? If the
repeatability is now okay, check the packing
technique of sample.

4. Contact Zeltex.
Poor accuracy/Bad readings 1. Are you in the correct product for the grain
you are using?

2. Have 5 reference samples available to test

and read them on the ZX-800. Go into the
statistical program and see what the
correlation and standard error are.

3. If the correlation and standard error are

good, do either a slope or bias adjustment.

4. Check the grain catch tray make sure it is

fully installed all the way to the back of the
ZX-800.

5. Contact Zeltex.
Display is blank. 1. Check the contrast knob, turn it to the left if
the display is all white and to the right if the
display is all blue.

2. Make sure the ZX-800 is turned on.

3. Contact Zeltex.
Grain has spilled inside the ZX- 1. Slide the grain catch tray out from under the
800. ZX-800.

2. Empty grain catch tray.

3. Slide tray back in the ZX-800 making sure

the tray is all the way to the back and in the
correct position. If the tray is not completely

installed, a light leak will cause poor
accuracy.
Key pad is locked-up 1. Turn the ZX-800 off, leave off for 3 to 5
seconds, turn back on.

2. Contact Zeltex.
Printer problems Power lamp is off:
a. Turn on power switch.
b. Is the AC adapter connected correctly?
c. Is the battery recharged?

Paper does not feed:

a. Paper loaded correctly?
b. Remove foreign matter in the paper inlet.
c. Are the on-line and off-line lamps on?
d. Set printer off-line.
e. Is the off-line lamp on?

Printer does not print or stops during printing:

a. Paper has run out, load more paper.
b. Error appears.
c. Set printer on-line. If you cannot set printer on
line the battery has discharged.
d. Connect AC adapter and set printer on-line.
e. Make sure the interface cable is set correctly.
f. Are you using the proper paper?
Thermal TP411-28CL

Printing is too light or dark:

a. Room temperature may be too high or low. Use
printer at 0o to 40oC
b. Are you using the proper paper?
Thermal TP411-28CL
