Assignment 1-AFM-FLUID MECHANICS
1. A vertical gap 2.35 cm wide of infinite extent contains oil of specific gravity
0.95 and viscosity 2.45 Ns/m2. A metal plate 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 0.15 cm
weighing 50 N is to be lifted through the gap at a constant speed of 0.1 m/s.
estimate the force required.
2. A piston of 7.9 cm diameter rotates concentrically inside a cylinder of 8 cm
diameter. Both the piston and the cylinder are 12 cm long. If the space
between the cylinder and the piston is filled with an oil having a dynamic
viscosity =2.35 poise, calculate the torque necessary to rotate the piston at
150 rpm.

3. If the velocity distribution over a plate is given by u y y 2 in which u is
3
the velocity in m/s at a distance y metre above the plate, determine the shear
stress at y=0 and y=0.15 m. Take dynamic viscosity of fluid as 8.63 poises.
4. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between surfaces is filled
with glycerin. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area
0.5 m2 between two large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s, if: (i) the thin
plate is in the middle of the two plane surfaces, and (ii) the thin plate is at a
distance of 0.8 cm from one of the plane surface? Take the dynamic viscosity
of glycerin = 8.10 x 10-1 NS/m2.
5. A thrust bearing consists of a 10 cm diameter pad on another pad separated by
an oil film =8c cP, by 1.5 mm. Compute the power dissipated in the bearing
if it rotates at 100 revolutions per minute.
8. If the surface tension of water in contact with air is 0.075 N/m, what
correction need to be applied towards capillary rise in the manometric reading
in tubes of 3 mm diameter?
9. Find out the minimum size of glass tube that can be used to measure water
level if the capillary rise in the tube is to be restricted to 2 mm. Consider
surface tension of water in contact with air as 0.073575 N/m.
10. What is the bulk modulus of elasticity of a liquid which is compressed in a
cylinder from a volume of 0.0125 m3 at 80 N/cm2 pressure to a volume of
0.0124 m3 at 150 N/cm2 pressure?
11. Determine the increase in pressure needed to cause 0.1% reduction in the
volume of water, air and mercury. Take modulus of elasticity of water and
mercury as 2.075 10 9 N/m and 2.431 1010 N/m respectively.
12. The pressure outside the droplet of water of diameter 0.04 mm is 101.24
kN/m2 (atmospheric pressure). Calculate the pressure within the droplet if
surface tension is given as 0.0711 N/m of water.

13. The capillary rise in a glass tube is not to exceed 0.2 mm of water. Determine
its minimum size, given that surface tension for water in contact with air =
0.0725 N/m.
14. A clean tube of internal diameter 3 mm is immersed in a liquid with a co-
efficient of surface tension = 0.48 N/m. the angle of contact of the liquid with
the glass can be assumed to be 130. The density of the liquid is 13600 kg/m3.
What would be the level of the liquid in the tube relative to the free surface of
the liquid outside the tube?
18. Determine the absolute pressure and the gauge pressure that would exist
within:
(i)A spherical droplet of water 5 mm in diameter.
(ii)A jet of water 5 mm in diameter.
Surface tension of water at the prevalent temperature is 0.0736 N/m and the
barometric reading stands at 750 mm of mercury. Take specific gravity of
mercury as 13.6 and specific weight of water as 9.81 kN/m3.
