Thanks for purchasing, downloading or finding one of my
books.

If you really did pay for the book or even if was one of my
FREE books from my site a REALLY BIG THANKS as a lot
of effort goes into each and every book.

If a friend sent you my book or you stumbled upon this

book online at one of the PDF download sites that grab
PDF files without permission thanks for your interest in my
book. Drop by my site at:

www.CurtSheller.com www.LearningUkulele.com

and send be whatever value you think its worth.

I appreciate your support and thanks again!

Why is this page in My book!

As you might guess there is a lot of piracy of intellectual property, books, music and images going on the
web including my books. Ive placed this page in the book instead of stamping each book as some of
books with a purchasers e-mail. So if you do pass the book along and you feel a friend will get some value
out of it please keep this notice in the book. Maybe theyll even support my site and my work.

Ukulele Chords
Introduction

Introduction
Tuning
Any tuning is possible on a ukulele if the
instrument construction supports it.

There are three common tunings used on

ukulele. The chords in this book are designed
to be played in what is commonly referred to as C or C6 tuning. This
tuning is often referred to as standard tuning. A tuning is sometimes
identified by a chord name or voicing.

C Tuning

G C E A

A low G variation of the standard tuning is also common and popular

on the tenor ukulele.

C Tuning, Low G Variation

G C E A

Regardless of what C tuning is used, the shape of the chord is the same.

Ukulele Chords
Introduction
What is a Chord?
A chord is a group of three or more different notes sounded together or
almost together.

On stringed instruments chords can be grouped into several categories:

Open Position Chords, Movable Form Chords, 4-Part Contemporary or
Jazz Chords and Free Form Chords. This book focuses on basic open
position and basic movable form chords. From these two chord categories
a variety of songs and styles can be played.

Basic Open Position Chords

Open position chords are the basic, first chords most ukulele players
learn. These chords are played in the fret one, two, three and four area of
the ukulele and include at least one open string in the chord.

Movable Form Chords

Movable chord forms are chords with no open strings. These chords are
transposable by moving each note of the chord the same number of frets
up and down the neck.

Each movable form is based on a common open position chord. Movable

forms allow you to play chords not found in the open position.

The open position includes the open strings and fret one, two, three and

Missing Chords?
A limited set of chords are available in the open position. Only basic major,
minor and seventh chords with a root of A, B, C, D, E, F or G and fitting
the description of an open position chord (page 4) are shown. A much
larger and wider range of chords are available using movable chord forms.

Diminished Seventh and Augmented Chords

Diminished seventh and augmented chords are neutral chords containing
equal distant intervals. Any one of the notes in the chord can be the root.

The above diminished seventh chord could be named: Gdim7, C#dim7,

Dbdim7, Edim7, A#dim7 or Bbdim7.

The above Augmented chord could be named: Aaug, C#aug or Dbaug,

Faug.

A diminished seventh chord can be played in place of a diminished chord.

Alternate notation for a diminished chord is a degree sign () and for an

augmented chord a plus sign (+) is used.

Open Position
Summary
Many more open position chords are possible beyond these basic chords
shown. The open position chords covered will allow you to play songs in a
variety common keys.

Developing the ability to play songs in any key and a variety of styles
requires learning movable chord forms.

More advanced chords, sometimes called jazz chords, such as maj7, m7,
m6, 6, sus and add chords are covered in subsequent sections.

For a study of these more advanced jazz chords see my book Exploring
Jazz Chords on Ukulele. This book and my book A Guide to Advanced
Chords for Ukulele are available at: www.CurtSheller.com.

Transposing Chords
a) All chords without open strings are movable and can be
transposed to any key.

b) In order to transpose a chord you need to determine what

string and fret the Root of the chord is on.

c) Following the Transposition Chart below, move all the notes

of the chord the same number of frets ascending (higher in
pitch) or descending (lower in pitch) to place it so the Root
of the chord is on the proper fret. Maintain the same
shape and fingering.

Transposing Chords
How to Use the Transposition Chart
a) Pick a chord without any open strings.

b) Determine what string and fret the Root is on.

c) To transpose upward, use the left (ascending keys) chart

(page 11).

To transpose downward, use the right (descending keys) chart

(page 11).

d) Each new chord is 1 fret above or below the original chord.

e) Dont forget to transpose each note of the chord.

f) Remember that the fingering and shape of the chord remains

the same for the chord.

Examples
a) If you take the F7 chord below and move all notes of the chord up
four frets, you now have an A7 chord.

F7 A7

(1) (5)

b) Take an E chord and move all notes of the chord up three frets, you
now have a G chord.

Movable Chord Forms

A Movable Form chord is any chord that does not contain open strings.
These chords are transposable up and down the ukulele fingerboard by
moving each note the same number of frets.

Each movable chords form is based on an open position chord covered

earlier. All keys are covered for each movable chord.

Each page shows the basic open position chord and its movable form as
well as a transposition chart showing what fret the movable form chords
root is on.

Not all keys are possible on all sizes of ukulele. The number of keys
possible for your ukulele depends on the number of frets available and the
size of the ukulele.
