    RHYTHMIC DICTATION

    Rhythmic dictation is essential for students to grow as musicians.


    Try to do rhythmic dictations as often as possible, but at least once a week.

    I have included 25 rhythmic dictations for you to use.


    Procedures:
    1) Students should have a copy of their own rhythmic dictation sheet that has the
    date of the dictation recorded.
    2) Play the example that you choose one bar at a time. I usually play each bar twice.
    3) When completed redo the whole example once so the students can check their
    work.
    4) When beginning to do rhythmic dictations with your students it often helps to
    write what rhythms you will be using. (i.e., quarter note and two eighths). I
    usually write them out on the board. This is particularly helpful when the
    rhythms begin to get more complicated.
    5) Make sure students insert the time signature and write all the notes on the
    third line.
    6) The students should keep all copies of their dictations in their workbook.
