Poverty in Honduras
approximately 8 million of people, some of them live out of the country mainly in USA
and Spain. The majority of people who live in Honduras live in poverty. Which are the
main causes of poverty in Honduras? This country has gone through several political
problems but the main causes of these problems have been: political corruption in
government system, lack of quality education, lack of job opportunities and increase of
teenagers in gangs.
First of all, the political system from Honduras is known to be corrupt. Big part
of the population hate politic leaders for being the main responsible of the poverty of our
country, due to the corruption in government system for instance: Police Institutions,
Justice Institutions, National Congress, Hospitals and so on. One of the famous scandals
of corruption has been the social welfare and health care lead by the ex-director Dr. Mario
Zelaya ex-politic officer of the National Party. According to La Prensa newspaper Dr.
Mario Zelaya stole more than 335 million dollars, it is the reason why he is in prison now
(Orellana, 2011).

university. Due to this, the economic situation that Honduran is suffering. According to
Instituto Nacional de Estadisticas (INE) done in 2017, a study shows 60.9 % of people
live in poverty and 38.4% of them are living in extreme poverty (INE, 2016).
WHY IS THERE A LOT OF POVERTY IN HONDURAS?
On the other hand, the lack of job opportunities is a critical problem that affects
all Honduran family. No matter what is your education position it affects in general. For
that reason, people decide to leave our country, facing up situations which putting their
lives at risk, and trying give their families a better life out of their country. 1 million of
leave their homes and children begin to have a change of behaviors without the
appropriate supervision. Consequently, young people, mainly teenagers between the ages
of 14 to 20, they begin to meet bad friendships in their lives. Some of them fall not only
in gangs better known like Mara Salvatrucha or Mara 18 but also they ingest alcohol,
To sum up, Honduras is a poor country, owing to these and other facts that affect
directly the economy of our nation. To see a change, firstly we have to change ourselves
and love our country. Then, we have to help other people no matter if you don`t have
money you can help people in different ways for instance giving clothes or food to the
