The success of our campaign in promoting the clean-up of household waste has exceeded our
wildest expectations.
This realization of my dream in scoring IELTS band 8.0 has surpassed all our
expectations/everyones expectation.
People with low education succeeding in business go beyond our expectation.
Attaining band 9.0 in IELTS tests succeeds beyond expectation.

She has become wealthy, especially, owning a big villa in Danang only after 2 years
graduation beyond family/popular expectation.

For vast numbers of children in the developing world, gaining IELTS scores band 7.0+ is
beyond their wildest dreams/expectations/ above expectation.

- To have expectations = To hold expectations formal


Many migrant workers had high/great/ optimistic/ positive expectations when they arrived in
big cities, but not anymore due to lack of social skills and qualifications.

Women who have high/over-high/ nave (ngy ng/ kh kh ch) over-optimistic/ unrealistic/
unreasonable expectations of marriage are often disappointed.
Women in Vietnam have a tendency to have/hold an over-high/over-optimistic/unrealistic of
marriages to/with foreign husbands often have a miserable existence/lead a miserable life.

Some people have totally unrealistic expectations of both medical and nursing staff, even
security forces as a result of widespread inflation.

There are some growing/dinstinct differences in the career expectations held by different
social groups. In fact, university hoders are more capable of securing steady jobs than those
who are educationally disadvantaged.

- To raise/ arouse/ build up/ create/ set up sb's expectations = to make sb expect
more success, money etc
Having raised expectations, the government failed to live up to its promises.

- To lower/reduce sb's expectations = to make someone expect less success, money


etc
If you do not gain such a high IELTS score, you may lower your expectations to reduce
pressure.

If you cannot afford your dream home, you may have to lower your expectations.

- To influence/ shape expectation


Many nationalists are attempting to influence public/popular/general
/widespread expectations of the government for reducing the rate inflation and
combating corruption.
There is still a general/popular expectation that married couples will have children,
especially boy.

- To come up to/live up to sb's expectations = to be as good as someone hoped or


expected
The quality of a new Iphone does not live up to purchasers expectation. = The quality and
design of a new Iphone do fall short of purchasers expectation/ are somewhat terrible,
contrary to/gainst all expectations.
The holiday lived up to all our expectations (= was as good as we were expecting).

- To fulfil/ match/ meet/ realize/ satisfy expectation = To be as good as someone


hoped or expected
Academic achievement during 4 years of university do not match/fulfill parental
expectation.
Family overexpectation/ Over-high/ Heightened/ Increased family expectation about
academic performance could infict psychological damage on children during the
developmental stage if they do not reaslize/match this.

- To fall below/fall short of sb's expectations (C1) = To be worse that someone hoped
or expected: khng a t ki vo ng
Phone sales fell short of financial experts expectation for boosting the retailing industry.
Interest rate of dollar currency has now fallen below depositors expectation (ki vo ng cua
ngi gi ti n)
Facilities in these schools fall far/well short of the standards required to become nationally
accredited schools.
If the quality of products is below expectation of consumers, for instance, short durability
and high price, the latter ones may shun away these items soon.

- To confound sb's expectations = To be different to what someone expected, in a way

Becoming involved in criminal activity could confound parental expectation in being
admitted to/enrolled in security institutions.

Vietnamese parents often form the family expectation for being admitted to high-
profile/reputable/world-class universities, placing too much pressure on children at early
stage.

- To be in line with expectations = to be similar to sth


The rate of youth unemployment reduced significantly in line with public/social/popular
expectation when the government is committed to the preservation of the country's
national interests.
The various categories of operating expenditure are broadly in line with expectations.
Pensions will be increased in line with inflation.
