SIOP Lesson Plan Template (Modified)

Date: 12/08/17

Grade/Class/Subject: 1st Grade Math

Unit/Theme: Whole Number System

Lesson Topic: Properties of Operation using two digit numbers

State Standards: Math-1st grade

Prepared Graduates: Understand the structure and properties of our number system. At their most
basic level numbers are abstract symbols that represent real-world quantities

Concepts and skills students master:

1. The whole number system describes place value relationships within and beyond 100 and
forms the foundation for efficient algorithms
Evidence Outcome:
c. Use place value and properties of operations to add and subtract. (CCSS: 1.NBT) i. Add
within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number and adding a two-digit
number and a multiple of ten, using concrete models or drawings, and/or the relationship
between addition and subtraction. (CCSS: 1.NBT.4
WIDA Standards: Standard: The Language of Mathematics

Content Objective: By the end of this activity, students will be able to add and subtract one
digit with two digit numbers by using math manipulative such as drawing a picture, counters
and ten frames.

Language Objective: Students will be able to explain how they solved the problem by using
terms such as: ones place, tens place and transfer

Key Vocabulary: Ones place, Tens place, digit, two digits.

Supplementary Materials: Tens frame chart, counters, number chart, place value chart.

Higher Order Questions: How can you as a student know what number belongs in the tens
position?

Time: Lesson Sequence / Activities

Motivation:
(Building background, links to experience, links to learning)
1. I will remind students how to solve an addition problem that contains a two-
5 minutes digit number. (Which they have been working on all week)
2. I will give students an addition problem that is simple starting off with: 8+2.
Then I will ask students what 5+5 is.
3. I will tell the students that we are going to be talking about adding one digit
numbers to produce a two-digit number. Using the number problem above.
Presentation:
(Language and content objectives, key vocabulary, comprehensible input,
strategies, interaction, feedback)
3. I will go over the standards and learning target with the students.
5 minutes 4. I will go over the key vocabulary words. Give students the sentence frame
The number. is in the..place
Students will go over ones digit and will begin with two digit numbers.

Practice and Application:

(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application,
feedback)
10 Teacher will model what is expected of students using a place value chart and
minutes counters. The problem will be like: 9+2.
I will model that by placing nine yellow counters on my ones place, I will set two
more red counters on my ones place. I will explain to the students what
grouping is and that we will group one set of ones and transfer over to the tens
position.
Students are encouraged to follow along with me while I model.
Students will than work on another problem independently. If some students are
5 minutes struggling, I will partner the student up with another student.
Review and Assessment:
(Review objectives and vocabulary, variety of formative assessments/checks for
understanding)
I will be checking for understanding by going around to each student and the
student will have to explain their problem to me and their solutions. Students
must use the sentence frame that is provided including the key vocabulary
words. The assessment will be orally.
Extension:
Differentiation can be done by working on simpler problems with those who are
struggling. With those who are grasping the idea and who know what to do but
are still struggling I will group those students with someone who understands
what is being asked.

For those students who have finished before everyone else, I will have the
students create their own problem. A problem that another classmate can do.
