FUNDAMENTALS.

A fundamental teaching of Astrology is* First know

thyself that you may learn to give the highest expres-
sion to celestial influences which operate through your
organism, for the more refined the organism the more
superior the manifestations through it.

Students of Astrology learn to realize by means of

research in the natal horoscope that an understanding
of self is gained which can be reached in no other way,
and as this conception grows it also develops an under-
standing of our fellow beings leading not alone to broth-
erly interest in them, but also to recognizing opportu-
nities in which to aid and benefit them.

And thus, from the study of self we graduate to< the

study of the self in others, for all life is one life, and
the kind word spoken or the helping hand given to a
fellow creature, whether of the human or animal crea-
tion (all members of the same family) is a kindness and
help to the spirit encased within your own physical
body.
High aspirations, proper study and due preparation,
place the student in a position to interpret Nature's
law in a manner that is truly beneficial and enables one
to teach in a truly serviceable capacity the way of
attainment. Happiness in life, unity of action, health,
and all real progress, are the consequent results. Thus,
knowledge of self leads to knowledge of others, and all
life is benefited to the degree of our unfoldment. In-
ward, Onward and Upward, for All, are the words in-

delibly inscribed upon the mental banner of every true

student of Astrology.

METABOLISM

Webster's Dictionary: "Metabolism — The act or

process by which living tissues or cells take up and
convert into their own proper substance the nutritive
material brought to them by the blood, or by which
they transform their cell protoplasm into simpler sub-
stances, which are fitted either for excretion or for
some special purpose, as in the manufacture of the
digestive ferments. Hence, metabolism may be either
constructive (anabolism) or destructive (katabolism)."

In Astrology metabolism or bodily processes are un-

derstood to receive their direction from planetary vibra-
tions, the influence of some planets and aspects being
constructive and others destructive, both operations
being necessary to well-being. The benign planets direct
anabolism, or constructive process; the malign planets
and aspects affecting katabolism, or destructive process.

For instance, Saturn is commonly symbolized as the

'Reaper" — —
an old man bearing a scythe usually thought
to indicate death, but in reality signifying the demise,
decay and dissolution of old worn-out tissue which must
be excreted. In this we see that the office of Saturn is
just as beneficial as that of any planet; without the
influence of Saturn the human system would soon be-
come congested with non-functioning matter.

ASTRO-METABOLISM

The human body possesses innumerable sensory-

nerves, each of which has an "end-organ," whose office
is to receive stimulus from without, transmit the vibra-
tion to "nerve centers," where
in turn it is forwarded
by means system" to those organs
of the "sympathetic
(and particularly to the brain organ) which are respon-
sive to particular incoming stimulus, causing chemical
changes to take place which give rise to sensation;
sensation produces thoughts in kind; thoughts deter-
mine acts; acts determine environment.
Before one is conscious of a sensation a chemical
change has taken place, a stimulating vibration has been
received which gave the chemical situation an urge
and a direction, according to the character of the vibra-
tion. The Mars are positive, exciting, in-
vibrations of
flammatory; those of Venus are soothing, pacifying,
cheering. The vibrations of each planet having their own
particular influence.

The working of the mind (the thoughts) is mostly

the result of internal changes due to external causes
and particularly due to Solar, Lunar and Planetary
vibrations.
One modern-day scientists has said
of the greatest of
"Life a constant internal adjustment to external en-

vironment." A careful study of planetary influences

as indicated by Astrology, proves that ponderous state-
ment a fact. A careful investigation will soon show that
what takes place in the Solar system has a correspond-

ing effect in the human system.

Planetary conditions at the moment of the first breath

of an individual "cast" the form with certain vibratory
tendencies, and whenever like planetary aspects occur
the organs in that individual give response, the man-
ifestations of which we know as their characteristics
or their personality.

A chart of the heavens at birth will give an ex-

perienced Astrological student an insight to the char-
acteristics or tendencies of an individual. The student's
knowledge of planetary motions, situations and aspects
enables him to foresee when like planetary conditions
will reoccur which will set into activity or manifestation
those inherent tendencies.

Aspects of Jupiter at certain times are conducive to

growth and expansion, hence we see the individual at
those times, generous, magnanimous and successfully
undertaking larger responsibilities. At other times,
under different aspects to that planet, we see him
profligate, extravagant, irresponsible and untrustworthy.
The fact is, Jupiter vibrates the liver and the faculties
of calculation and comparison; when Jupiter is well
aspected it gives vibrations which produce orderly
functioning of the liver and of the mind in that the
individual feels normal internally and manifests it out-
wardly as rectitude and business acumen. When Jupiter
is adversely aspected certain unfavorable chemical con-

ditions affeel the functioning of the Liver and tin organs

of calculation in the brain, with the result that he mis-

judges and makes erroneous decisions and futile at-
tempts; failing to succeed from his own vain efforts he
may be tempted to decamp with the cash of the bank
or the funds of an employer.

And so the student sees in the birth chart, in the re-

curring planetary positions, and in the acts of an indi-
vidual, correspondences which inspire him to further
research until at last he is enabled to utilize the knowl-
edge gleaned in the every-day affairs of life. Knowing
something of the nature of planetary laws, he aims to
work in conscious harmony with auspicious indications
and to transmute, by aspiring effort of will, those ten-
dencies which, if followed heedlessly, would lead to
distress.

The wonders have not half been revealed

of Astrology
— great remain unexplored to try
fields of inquiry yet
the mettle of aspiring minds. But in the thousands of
years that Astrology has existed, studied by many of
the greatestmen known to history, a vast storehouse of
information has accumulated and is ready for the use
of those who are advanced sufficiently to realize that
"The heavens (solar system) declare the glory of God,"
and who are ready to partake of the glory in the joy
which is the reward of enlightenment

cause malign aspects prevail some days you must be
"bad" along with the day.
Adverse aspects suggest caution and deliberation
and that we bring to the fore our powers of poise from
the hidden depths of the treasure-house within.

ing only to be liberated.

Down with the false portals of fear and limitations;

arise, from the fallen ruinsi of fears, arise to the
majesty of your super-self, to the glory of your strength,
courage and faith in the "kingdom of HEAVEN which
dwells WITHIN.
Adverse aspects are cross-examinations^ tests of
your knowledge, your strength, your faith, and each of
these examinations that you PASS entitles and fits you
for finer opportunities of utilizing your abilities.

Greater achievements than you ever dared dream of

are in store for you when you learn to assert your
power over strife and discontent, when you learn to
release the floods of sunshine in your soul and laugh
discordant obstacles out of existence. Astrology points
the way. Watch the daily astrological indications and
act accordingly.
You are a complete universe within yourself and can
at will manifest the most potent powers of love, health

health and attainment. These but await your belief

your faith in your ability to overcome, all undesirable
elements and conquer the world within; transmute
every unlovely trait and tendency into loveliness and
"all things shall be added unto you."

Whenever you see the word "adverse," malefic or

malign,remember their true meaning and purpose, as
here astrogically explained and make them act as
promptors to stir you on to victory within.

The object of our publications is to help all transcend

old limitations and evolve into new manifestations of
harmony and progress.

PREDICTIONS VERIFIED.
In the Astrological Bulletina for May mention was
made of the solar eclipse occurring on April 28th, 1911,
in the 7th degree of Taurus, which, among other things,
"afflicts cattle," and in connection with this item the
following newspaper clipping is interesting, as it veri-
fies the before mentioned planetary indications and in-
fluence:
"100 HORSES ARE DEAD.

'WALKING DISEASE' KILLS WALLA WALLA

ANIMALS.
"Cause and Cure of Dread Affliction Are Unknown and
Sufferer Walks Until It Dies.

"WALLA WALLA, Wash., May 26.— (Special.)— The

dread 'walking disease' has again struck the Walla

Walla Valley and it is estimated that 100 horses have

died from its effects. No horses stricken have been
known to recoveY. The cause of the disease is unknown
and no cure has been discovered.
"The symptoms are walking. The horse will walk
over anything, anywhere and, in the last stages of blind-
ness and madness, will walk into a fence, barn or any
other obstruction, the only desire of the animal seems
to be to walk. Sometimes the horses live only a night,
as was the experience of H. H. Hungate, a large ranch-
er. A. P. Pierson's horses lasted longer and most of the
animals stricken live from a week to two weeks, walk-
ing at every opportunity, suffering terribly. Farmers
are now shooting horses showing first signs of the dis-
ease, in order to stamp it out and save suffering."

Subscribers who are accustomed to reading the Astro-

logical Bulletina chapter each month entitled "Astrolog-
ical Influence of the New Moon" and who also keep
astride of the times through the daily press have no-
ticed how correctly Astrology predicts coming events.
For instance, in the June issue, No. 32, page 103, earth-
quakes are announced about the 1st and 8th of June;
these occurred with great loss of life in the far East on
June 1st, in Mexico on June 7th, and in Venezuela on
the 8th.

Regarding the election: As stated an unusually heavy

vote was cast, and, contrary to general expectancy, the
open-town element won, as astrologically predicted.

Referring to postal activity: 1000 postal savings banks

were decided upon and movement begun toward their
establishment. §

Concerning amusements: The Rose Festival in Port-

land, June 5th to 10th, was declared a stupendous suc-
cess by all who were fortunate enough to be present; a
genuine carnival spirit prevailed.
The death rate was high and among those who passed
who held great public esteem and high position were
Judge Sears and General Mills.

And so on, the other indications became verified in

ways too numerous to mention, and indeed, the only ob-
ject in speaking of this at all is to show that Astrology
DOES point the way.

ASPECTS AFFECT CERTAIN PLACES

A subscriber asks "why do the effects of planetary

aspects seem to strike some places more than others?"
It is because some places have influences that coin-
cide with the nature of the aspect and others do not.

Each country, city or village has its own horoscope,

much the same as human living beings have, and the
various lunations, eclipses and other celestial phenom-
ena have an effect on those horoscopes which are sus-
ceptible of influence because of similarity of planetary
positions or aspects therein.

If the horoscope of a place could be ascertained it

would be of incalculable value to the inhabitants there-

of,because from it could be foretold all the important
conditions relating to its welfare or otherwise and great
advantages be derived for the benefit of the people by
the knowledge possible.
Another of the many advantages of such horoscopes
would be that individuals comparing their own natal
charts with the charts of cities could choose the best
places to reside; if sick, they could choose a place
where they would soonest recover health; if poor, where
they could best accumulate money; if friendless, where
they would meet congenial associates, etc., and in many
other ways improve their conditions physically, men-
tally or spiritually.

ogy. What the science needs is a school well endowed

financially so that such practical researches may be
made in a highly scientific manner. Suitable, grounds
are necessary for the proper cultivation of seeds and
medicinal herbs under planetary influence; suitable in-
struments are needed for the instruction of the public
as to the motion of planets; libraries are necessary for
research into cause of past events in connection with
the planetary positions so that proper tabulations may
be made for future benefit to individuals and to business
interests; printing plants thoroughly equipped are nec-
essary for the promulgation of astrological information
for general public distribution; a press bureau is desir-
able as well as numerous highly proficient computers
and compilers.

When Astrology has some of the assistance and sup-

port given it that other educational institutions enjoy

it will startle the world with its wonderful truths and

practical utilities.

ZODIAC INFLUENCE.

We are nearly accustomed to thinking of but one

all
zodiac, but in reality there are two of them one in the—
heavens and one in the body of each person, and this
fact is what puts truth in the familiar saying, "As above,
so below," for vibratory aspects caused by configura-
tions among planets in the heavenly zodiac cause like
vibrations in the zodiac below, i. e., in that of the body.
The influence of planetary conditions in the ambient
produces chemical changes in the body, which in turn
produce feeling; feelings cause thinking; thoughts
cause action; actions determine environment.
The aura of a spiritually developed person is less
dense than that of one who is not so enlightened, and
they therefore sense more and finer vibrations, have
keener feelings, and by the more refined thoughts pro*
duce better quality in actions.
No matter how lowly or unfavorably one may have
been born, there is a possibility of great improvement
by learning to properly interpret sensation, refining the
feelings, elevation of thoughts and control of the acts.
Astrology points the way! Watch well the aspects and
be prepared to act according to your wisdom. When
in doubt, choose that which will produce most harmony.

PLANETARY INFLUENCES.
John Gadbury, author of "The Doctrine of Nativities."
1658, in chapter VIII says: not here take no-
"I shall
tice of any poetical fictions concerning the names of the
seven planets or their governments and rules, such as
Saturn's reigning in the Golden Age, when the Earth
brought forth without tillage, etc., or of Jupiter being
the son of Saturn, who, because his father would have
devoured him, expelled him from his kingdom and gave
rule of hell to Pluto, rule of water to Neptune (Posi
don), and took Heaven and Earth to himself; or how
that Mars was produced of Juno without the concourse
of royal Jupiter, and so, being the son of Discontent,
Was called the God of War; of Venus being the Goddess
of Love and Beauty; Mercury the God of Eloquence and
messenger in chief to all the other gods. I say that 1
shall not take notice of such, they being but witty in-
ventions of aspiring pates, and carry a far greater glow
of rhetoric than reason in them. Therefore, neglecting
fictitious flourishes, I you with the true
shall present
shapes and description
qualities, natures, significations,
of the seven planets as by experience and certain ob-
servations they have been found and so transmitted to
us by the best artists."
And looking forward 250 years to our present time it
seems ridiculous that in many of our public schools the
time and energy of children is wasted on lessons in
mythology simply to familiarize them with so-called
"classic literature," although a study of such in the
light of understanding of Astrology would reveal a great
deal of wisdom otherwise totally obscure.

ANCIENT SEERS.
It was well known among the ancients that Astrolo-
gers were seers, and, even in this day and time, stu-
dents find that a study of Astrology develops the occult
faculties, such as prophecy, intuition, clairvoyance, tel-

epathy, healing power, etc.

That the ancient seers were possessors of psychic at-

tainments of a fine order may be noted by the fact that
they termed the planet Saturn "Superiorum Altissimus,"
all the seven, meaning that its vibrations
the highest of
were the more ponderous, and, as they did not term the
Sun and Moon as planets, the seven includes Uranus
and Neptune.
Now this designation is remarkable when we consider
that they had no mighty telescopes with which to make
occular comparisons, and Jupiter, to the naked eye, is
superior in size, brilliancy and splendor to Saturn which
appears much smaller, and of pale, leaden, insignificant
color.
But the seers of old were not deceived by outward ap-
pearances and by means of psychic sight, perception
and great observation they correctly determined Sat-
urn's true status and recorded their knowledge symbol-
ically, herioglyphically and otherwise, so that posterity
might have the advantage and use of the facts. And to
realize how conclusive were the facts thus gained it is
but necessary for us to know that with all our great
modern mechanical inventions and scientific instru-
ments and scholastic achievements we have not found
the ancients in error, but instead modern day observa-
tions substantiate those of the ancients and prove that

they were correct with regard to the planet's size,
many other matters of de-
speed, color, influence and
tail.

ASTROLOGY THE SOLVENT.
We believe that the science of Astrology will solve
the riddles or difficulties in life that we as inhabitants
of Terra are required to meet.

As we feel, so we think; as we think, so we act; the

cause planetary influence. We feel strong or we feel
is

weak; brave or fearful; ambitious or content, and we

act accordingly, with results corresponding to the na-
ture, influence and time of the act. The quality of re-
sults can be improved by knowing the best times to act,
just as the farmer produces best results by planting
at proper seasons.
A comparative study of Astrology and of self will open
the vision to wisdom in thought and action despite, or
in keeping, with the feelings.

Of course, there are many surprising events which

occur in our lives due to no apparent effort of our own
and a study of our natal chart will tell the nature of
these, whether favorable or otherwise, and the pro-
gressed chart designates the period of their occurrence.

MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE.
The newspapers declare that juvenile crime is in-

creasing because of easy divorces.

If juvenile crime is increasing it is because of easy
marriage.
Were it the duty of the clerk who issues marriage
licenses to decide whether or not applicants should be
granted permission to wed according to the favorable
or unfavorable testimonies in their horoscopes, there
would be fewer unhappy marriages, fewer divorces and
fewer children born with criminal tendencies. Success-
ful and fruitful marriages would be the common order
and the progeny Nature's noblemen.

NAMING CHILDREN.
Prospective parents should have a name ready to give
their new born and the name should be spoken to the
child as it breathes in its first breath.
Any formal function connected afterward with the
naming, such as christening, should be performed on a
day carefully selected for its favorable planetary as-
pects and the ceremony conducted in a beneficent plan-
etary hour.
As sex can be predetermined by Astrology, there is
no diffculty in choosing an appropriate name in advance
of birth. When it is desired to give a family name to
the child, sentimental reasons should be ignored and
one chosen from a person who possesses very excellent
qualities, such as good health, a happy, kind disposi-
tion, brilliant intellect, etc.

Each letter of the alphabet has its own quality and

in aword selected should be a fortunate figure, in nu-

merical value and this should also be considered when

choosing a name. The sum total of the letters in accord-
ance with the science of numbers.

NATURE.
Are railroad accidents subject to a periodic law? A
few years ago they became so common that it was
highly dangerous to enter a train. Then there was an
interval of comparative safety and now we hear of acci-
dents everywhere once more. What Mendelexieff will
reveal to us the law which governs these recurrent
calamities and thus make possible a remedy? The —
Oregonian, July 16, 1911.

All events that transpire are the effect of Natural

Law. The causes proceed from planetary influences of
which Astrology is the interpreter, and a proper study
of this science will do much to reveal the workings of
the causes to the extent that in the course of time, as
the human family develops its latent powers, the effects
will be diverted from destruction to construction, igno-
rant subjection will become intelligent direction. Astrol-
ogy points the way.

IMPORTANT INGRESS AND LUNATJON.
FEBRUARY 17, 1912.
Marking the Actual Birth of the New Age.
To the uninitiated it means nothing unusual, but to
the occult student it an event of tremendous import.

On this date the planet Uranus returns to its ruling

sign, Aquarius, and enters it for the first time in about
84 years, and, as- the Sun, by movement of "preces-
sion," has entered that constellation, this
also just
marks the real birth of the Aquarian age!
A notable coincident tending to make
this a day
of great import is the Moon, by its
fact that the
monthly transit, will be in the sign Aquarius, and the
Sun, by its apparent yearly transit, will also be in this
sign, and the two luminaries will be in conjunction.
This is the day of "new moon/' and the Chinese "New
Year," and the celebration among the "Celestials" will
continue over a period of from a week to ten days,
starting with that day. Business among the Chinese
will be practically suspended during the celebration,
even the laborers dropping their work to enjoy the
series of fetes which will be held at the different Chi-
nese mercantile stores and other habitations.

ing on a day of a great new world cycle, portends that

China is destined to become the most free, liberal and
advanced race on the earth during the reign of Uranus
in the next 2160 years. "The first shall be last and the
last shall be first." Verily, it looks as though the
"heathen" Chinese will have his inning!

Adepts the world over Will consecrate this day to

the influx of Uranian vibrations, and henceforth let no
Astrologer straggle behind in the march of progress
by again calling Saturn the ruler ol Aquarius, for
Uranus has come into his own and will prove his

claim to the rights and title of ruler of this sign by

his works hereafter!

This date marks the beginning of a new cycle such

as has not occurred for about 25,000 years.

Another noticeable sidereal incident is that Venus

is the next planet to enter into this sign about a week
after the lunation.

Aquarius is symbolized as a man emptying a water

ewer and Venus' entry at this time (being also wel-
comed by a trine of the Moon), is portentious that in
the new age woman will play an important part in the
march of progress. She will attain a position of busi-
ness and political equality and will also insert a refin-
ing and beautifying influence into the affairs of domes-
tic and political economy. She will have much to do
in the elevation of art and( promotion of public morals.

THE VALUE OF ASTROLOGY
Lies In Its Ability To Aid In Developing the Latent
Talents Embodied In Every Individual.

"Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and its right-

eousness and all these things shall be added unto
you/'
Properly interpreted, this means seek right-us-ness,
not necessarily religiousness, but to do things rightly,
that is, do everything at a harmonious rate of vibra-
tion so that the doing of it brings satisfaction or con-

tent; do things at a Right Time so that the results

will be most fruitful, and all things shall be added

unto you in proportion to your rightness. Heaven
is harmony; "The kingdom of heaven is within" when
harmony is wijthin.

All things added means that which makes for our

unfoldment, our development, our enlightenment, our
happiness and our well-being, for it is these things
added together which makes the sum total of a suc-
cessful life.

To seekthe chimera of riches first is likely to lead

one to miss the golden opportunities which are the re-
ward of merit exercised in legitimate channels. Fi-
nancial wealth is temporal but the reward of endeavor
rightly directed is spiritual wealth and is an asset of
everlasting value.

Therefore, seek first to utilize to the highest extent

the talents with which you are endowed. Learn to ex-
press right-us-ly the kingdom
heaven within and
of
fruitful will be the results of your efforts; you will
gather the harvest every day and will have bounty
enough to give liberally to any fellow being who may
need temporary assistance to regain equilibrium lost
by failure to recognize or understand THE LAW. And
it is to these ends that Astrology points the way.

Seek and ye SHALL find.

REVOLUTIONS.
The annual revolution is based upon a chart made
for the exact time that the Sun in ephemeris for cur-

same degree and

rent year returns to identically the
minute of longitude it occupied at birth. The testi-
monies by position and aspects of planets among
themselves in such a chart, as well as their relation
or aspects to radical planets, etc., indicate the gen-
eral conditions for the year to follow.

The lunar revolution, as above, is based upon the

Moon's return to its exact radical place monthly.

The daily revolution is based upon the time of the

radical ascending sign and degree returning to be the
ascendant and the testimonies thereof indicate the
general trend of affairs for the following twenty-four
hours. All such testimonies as those derived from
these three charts must coincide with indications in
the nativity, otherwise they must be rejected or ig-
nored, for nothing must be predicted from them that
is not promised by evidence in the nativity.

PROFECTION.
Protectiona moving, proceeding or going forward,
is

and in the Doctrine of Nativities signifies a regular

and orderly change of the planets from one sign to an-
other; and of the cusps of houses (in your nativity)
out of one sign into another, according to the succes
sion of signs. In nativities it is threefold, viz., annual,
mensurnal and diurnal, i. e., yearly, monthly and daily.

The annual protection was by adding one whole sign

for each year to your radical ascendant, using exactly

the same degree and minute always, as at birth.

The mensurnal protection is made by adding one

sign per month to the ascendant at birth.

In the daily protection, each sign succeeding that of

the radix is held to continue for the ascendant pro-
fectional after birth two days, three hours and fifty-

four minutes.

This method of prediction has fallen into desuetude

and has given way to the more modern methods of
progressing a horoscope; nevertheless it remains still
interesting for investigation by students of inquiring
mind, as much of truth will be found therein.

A TRUE FANTASY.
Observers of the starry realm are often brought to
think that the heavenly orbs are working stupendous
schemes which sometimes unite them to produce a
common end or casts them into seeming while
conflict,
at other times they appear in playful, tricky moods to
the delight of onlookers.

Only last night (April 14, 1911) while spying on these

"sparks of the sky" and listening with ear clairaudient,
I heard Jupiter speak in tones meant to be gentle and

loving, yet really with the roar of thunder: "Oh, beau-

tiful Luna, it is indeed with joy that I again behold
your lovely face. Come, come to my arms that I may
suitably embrace the mistress of the earthly sphere.
Pull twenty-eight days have passed since last you came

and brightened us with your smile. Look, child, being

retrograde,I hasten to meet you! Hurry; let us pro-
ceed to zodiacal conjunction, for the night is far spent
and there is much to do."
Then in silvery tones gentle Luna replied:
sweet,
"Great Jove, come with cosmic speed, but I am slow
I

in motion this eve. (When going more than 13 de-

grees, 10 minutes, 36 seconds she is swift in motion.)
Your jovial voice thrills me with mystic delight, and
from your ponderous vibrations, I gather fruitful in-
spiration, which I will gladly bestow on Terra (the
earth) when next I am in Perigee, for am I not his
only satellite?"
"Truly said, little one, but while I disport eight
moons, none are so great as you. Listen; we are in
the mansion of the Scorpion, a delighter in moisture.
Thou, being cold and moist in nature, I, warm and
moist, should easily gather the elements from here-
abouts and drop them on Terra while yet he sleeps.
'Twill be a frolic of the planets!"

"A most delightful pastime, oh mighty Jupiter, and

I join with glee."
And then was heard the sweet music of the spheres,
the atmosphere began to expand, the air grew heavier
and heavier with moisture until, overburdened, it gent-
ly spread upon the earth and sprayed the surface
generously, not as rain, but exquisite dew.

But hark! discordant against melody a chilling voice

is heard; 'tis a sound from envious Saturn muttering

deeply to himself, "Such foolish capers are not to ray

liking. Diana is a lunatic, and Jove, well, he seems
drunk with infatuation. Think they that I stand idly
in the sky? I, too, have magic and will pit it against

them to frustrate! the gleeful plans. I will bow their

knees in sorrow and fill their breasts with dismay.

"Here, underling," he cried, for he bore no great love

to Mercury, who perchanee was traveling nigh, and
who, being in the sign of Luna's exaltation (Taurus),
was looking intently across at the "lesser light" and
the "greater fortune," watching their actions with
considerable interest, if not with pleasure, for he is a
friend to both, but at Saturn's terrifying command he
came to himself with a start, for Mercury's nature is
neutral and must lend power to whom it is nearest in
the sky, and, being also quite diplomatic, he answered
very blithly, "Aye, aye, sir, I am at your command, oh
Prince of Darkness."
"Knowest thou that we are in zodiac opposition to
yonder mawks?" he said, pointing disdainfully at the
planets in Scorpio, while Mercury shook his head in
vigorous assent, for no such knowledge ever escaped
his perceptive mind.

"Besides," continued Saturn, "you are in your own

one of your mansions- (Gemini)
'terms,' semi-sextile to
and trine to Virgo, the other, while I in this sign am
in one of a nature like my own (earthly), and also
trine to my own domain, Capricorn; therefore our joint
forces are most powerful, so pay you heed to my de-
signs and go forth as messenger of the gods and voice

thusly, 'Saturn bidsyou grasp the falling dew, cool it,
crystallize and turn it to frost.' "

satanic smile he dismissed Mercury and settled back
to watch the results of his dark plot.

The messenger performed his work speedily and

well, and soon the earth was covered with a mantle
of white like unto snow.

And Terra, in sleep, trundled on, for he had many

miles yet to turn on his axis before completing his
prescribed revolution of 25,000 miles in 24 hours, and
to travel 18% miles in orbit per second also and keep
things cool at the poles is no small feat either asleep
or awake.
But soon the Sun, lord of day and ruler of this
planetary system, began making an appearance at the
eastern horizon, and, glancing quickly around the sky
and over the earth, he commenced to smile, and smile,
and smile, and then he smiled again. "How well they
have each performed their work," he beamed, "and
to make it all the more beneficent I will embue it with
life." And straightway the frost began to move and
change and descend down into the ground where
eager worms and little bugs drank their fill, while
flowers and trees partook their share and all proceed-
ed to manifest their thanks in their own various ways,
for it was Spring and all was well.

A. D. 14 — A comet preceded the death of Augustus,

the first emperor of Rome. Earthquake in Italy.
55 — Suicide of Pontius Pilate, the judge who con-
demned Christ.

68 —Halley's comet. Suicide of Nero, persecutor of

Christians. Siege of Jerusalem.
73 —A comet shone 180 days over Cypress. Earth-
quake in Cypress, in which 10,000 persons perished.

79 — Death Emperor Vespasian, who began the

siege of Jerusalem. The Roman historians, Dion Cas-
sius and Suetonius, relate that Vespasian, when taken
sick, heard his astrologers discussing in a low tone of
voice the comet, which was then visible, which, they
said, predicted his death. The emperor roused angrily
and said: "This hairy star is not meant for me. It
must be meant for my enemy, the king of the Parthians,
for he is hairy, while I am bald." On the following
night Vespasian died in great pain, and the comet was
seen no more. Shortly after Vespasian's death follow-
ed the fierce eruption of Mount Vesuvius, November 1,

which destroyed the two flourishing cities of Hercul-

aneum and Pompeii.
1002 —A comet over England and Scandinavia. Mas-
sacre of allDanes in England by King Ethelred.

time and shone for 40 nights, waxing and waning with
the moon. William the Conqueror haled it as an omen
of destruction to Harold of England just before the

omen, but because of the popular dread of the comet

there were riots and bloodshed in Rome and elsewhere

in Italy. The chroniclers of the times pointed out the
significant fact that shortly after his jubilee Pope Boni-
face was made a prisoner by King Philip of France,
causing him to die of rage.

terrible black plague which swept from the orient all
over Europe and Asia.

1333 Chinese and Arab astronomers record a bright
comet over China, Turkestan and Persia. Birth of

1347 —Acomet precedes the "black death," a terrible

pestilence, followed by famine all over the world. One-
fourth of all the people of Europe died. Fifteen million

1363 —A of immense size shone for three
comet
months over northern Europe. Pestilence and famine
in England, Poland and Russia.

1811-12 —
This huge comet was one of the most fam-
ous of modern times. It was first seen in France on
March 26, 1811, and was last observed over southern
—
Russia on August 17, 1812 an appearance of 17
months, the longest on record. For a while it had two
tails, then only one. The length of this tail was esti-
mated as 100,000,000 miles. It was called "Napoleon's
comet." Under its luster Napoleon gathered his "grand
armee," the greatest army assembled in Europe since
 32

Xerxes, and invaded Russia. Wars were fought at the

same time in Portugal and Spain, where the British
stormed Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajos; and in America,
where Harrison's victory over the Indians under Tecum-
seh at Tippecanoe, and the sea-fight between the Pre-
sident and Little Belt ushered in the war of 1812. In
Egypt the comet was taken as an omen of the bloody
massacre of the Mamelukes perpetrated at Cairo.

1821 "Napoleon's comet." Seen one night only over
France and over St. Helena the night before the death
ot Napoleon at St. Helena.
1835-6 — Halley's comet. Immediately after the com-
et became generally visible in the old world the bubon-
ic plague, known of old as the "black death," broke out
in Egypt. In the city of Alexandria alone 9,000 people
died in one day. By the Moslems this calamity was
generally attributed to the evil influence of the comet.

In America the comet became visible to the naked

eye only late in the year. Then, on its approach to
the sun, it was lost to view and passed over to the
southern hemisphere, where is was next observed by
Sir John Herschel in South Africa.
Shortly after its brief blaze over North America the
great "New York fire" laid waste the entire business
section of the biggest city in the new world. All the
commercial centers of the city, including the richest
firms and largest commercial warehouses, were laid in
ashes. The fire raged through days and nights. In all.
530 houses burned down and $18,000,000 of property was
consumed. Owing to the intense cold, the sufferings of
the homeless were pitiable.

In Florida, at the same time, Osceola, the chieftain

of the Seminole Indians, called upon the comet as a
signal for war against the whites. The Indians called
the comet "Big Knife in the Sky."

The war began with a bloodymassacre of American

soldiers under General Wiley Thompson at Fort King.
All were slaughtered. Osceola scalped General Thomp-
son with his own hands. On the same day Major Dade
of the United States aj*my, who was leading a relief
expedition into Florida from Tampa Bay, was ambushed
by the Indians near Wahoo Swamp and massacred
with his men. Of the whole expedition only four men
escaped death.
With the passing of the comet to the southern hem-
isphere bloody wars broke out one after another in
Mexico, Cuba, Central America, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru
and Argentina. All those countries were in a welter
of blood.
At the same time the American settlers of Texas
declared themselves independent and made open war
on Mexico. The war began with the battle of Gonzales,
in which 500 American frontiermen fought and de-
feated over a thousand Mexican soldiers. This was
followed by other fierce fights at Goliad and Bexar.

Next came the bloody massacre of the Alamo, when

all of Bowie's and Crokett's American followers were
killed in an all-night fight. Out of 200 Americans every
man fell at his post. This was the deed of blood on
which Joaquin Miller wrote his stirring "Ballad of the
Alamo."

One month before the final disappearance of the
comet the Texas war came to an end with the bloody
battle of San Jacinto, when Sam Houston, with 800
American frontiermen, defeated 1500 Mexicans and
made a prisoner of President Santa Ana of Mexico.
When the comet had passed to the southern hemi-
sphere it was seen at its brightest in South Africa.
The pious Boers of Cape Colony understood it to be a
sign from heaven and forthwith set out on their great
trek across the Orange and Vaal Rivers, where they
founded the Orange Free State and Transvaal repub-
lic.

Thus the comet was the signal for the first blood
drawn in the long fight between the British and Boers.

1843 Another famous comet seen all over the world
during the spring of that year. Especially brilliant in
the southern hemisphere and in India. War in India
on the part of the British against Afghanistan, Belu-
chistan, Scinde and against the Sikhs.

1848 Encke's famous periodic comet. Bloody re-
volutionary risings and civil wars in France, Hungary,
Bohemia, Austria, Germany, Italy and Poland.

Donati's comet. This comet, which appeared
1858-59
to be charging straight down from the zenith and had
a curved tail, was observed from June, 1858, to April,
1859. It was seen at its brightest in the south, in
Italy, Mexico and in the far east. While it shone over
the far east there were bloody wars between the Brit-
ish and the risen people of India; between the British
and the Chinese, who objected tc having opium thrust

upon them; while Japan was in the throes of revolu-

toin and civil war. In Mexico the standard of revolt
against the clericals was raised by Juarez, thus plung-
ing Mexico into civil war and war with France. Im-
mediately after the disappearance of the comet war
broke out in Italy between the French and Italians on
one side and the Austrians on the other, ending in the
bloody battle of Solferino.

1861 — "First civil war comet." The brightest comet

of the 19th century. Sir John Herschel, the English
astronomer, said of this comet: "It far exceeded in
brightness any I have before observed, those of 1811
and the recent splendid one of 1858 not excepted."

The comet was first seen by a layman and appeared

at its brightest during the summer months in North
America. Its coming was heralded as meaning a great
civil war.
1862 — "Second civil war comet.'' Another comet of
very peculiar appearance, with jets of flame flaring
from its head, showed itself during the summer months
in North America. The civil war was then at its
height. The coming of the comet was taken to herald
the bloody battles of Shiloh, Williamsburg, Seven Days,
Seven Pines, Cedar Mountain and Antietam, all fought
that year after the comet's disappearance.

1877 — Coggia's comet. This comet was seen at its

brightest over southern France and Spain during the

summer months of that year. Spain was then in the
throes of the bloody Carlist war.

1881 Garfield's comet. The comet showed itself for
a few nights only in March during the week following
President Garfield's inauguration. It was observed
also in Russia. On March 13 Emperor Alexander II of
Russia was assassinated with a oomb. Three months
later President Garfield was assassinated in Washing-
ton.

1882 Comet of Tel-el-Kebir. A comet with two tails
was seen at its brightest over Egypt during the first
two weeks of September. Egypt was then in the midst
of Arabia Pasha's uprising against the British. On
September 18, when the comet was last seen, Arabi
Pasha was overthrown by General Wolseley in the
bloody battle of Tel-el-Kebir.

1906 San Francisco comet. A comet discovered by
Ross on March 17, remaining visible for one month.
Observed from the Lick observatory in California. On
April 17 came the California earthquake and burning
of San Francisco.

1908 Morehouse's comet. Visible for more than a
month, during the autumn. In Italy it was interpreted
afterward as an omen foreboding the Messina earth-
quake late in the year.
1910 — Halley's comet. Great wars prophesied. Pes-
tilence and disease. — Sunday Oregonian, Portland, May
15, 1921.

VACCINATION AND ASTROLOGY

The medical fraternity is wrong in assuming that
every child will sooner or later contract smallpox un-
less vaccinated, because unless Mars afflict either the
ascendant or the luminaries (Sun and Moon), or is in
the 6th house of the nativity, there is little liability to
take smallpox. But persons wlio have the afflictions
named should exercise constant sanitary precautions,
and pay attention to hygiene and diet. "Directions" in
the progressed horoscope would show when affection is
likely and the person could apply double caution during
such periods and reduce the chance to a minimum.
The nativity of a gentleman born at Sunderland,
England, 0:54 A.M., June 10, 1853, shows 6 degrees of
the zodiacal sign Aries rising and hyleg; Mars, its ruler,
is in Taurus, nearly conjoined with Uranus and Saturn.

He died at the age of 19 (a Mars period) of smallpox (a

Martial disease). The "directions" operating was Mars
conjunction and parallel ascendant. He was vaccinated
in infancy. Mars in the sign of the Bull (Taurus) and
afflicted would show no help from that animal source.

In fact, he would have been better off without the

lymph in his system; this is shown by Mars being
tinctured with evil rays from Uranus and Saturn.

GREAT MEN AND ASTROLOGY
In a small work called "The Uses of Biography," by
Edwin Paxton Hood, London, England, published in
1853, in chapter VII, the writer gives an account of the

foibles and vices of great men, and on pages 116 and

117 we have the following sentences:

''Cardinal Richelieu, the minister of a great empire

(France) believed in the calculation of nativities. Even
Sir Isaac Newton gave, credit to the idle nonsense of
judicial astrology; he who first calculated the distances
of the stars and revealed the laws of motion by which
the Supreme Being organizes and keeps in their orbits
unnumbered worlds he who had revealed the mysterites
of the stars themselves. Dryden, Sir Isaac Newton's
contemporary, believed in the same absurdity."
(Is it not strange that a man may excel in all the
modern and even make wonderful discoveries
sciences,
in such as astronomy and mathematics, and be counted
sane and sensible, and even a very learned man, but the
moment he touches astrology, by some legerdemain,
he is said instantly to become insane or a scoundrel?
There is no doubt but Sir Isaac Newton was an excellent
Astrologer, and even calculated his own and most of his
friends' horoscopes. Cardinal Richelieu no doubt under-
stood Astrology, but probably he employed eminent
Astrologers to do the most of the calculations for him
in his judicial Astrology, as had Queen Elizabeth.)

"It ispublished by William Congreve, an English ac-

tor,and the same was also published in the Encyclopae-
dia Britannica and a number of other publications, that
John Dryden calculated his son Charles' horoscope, and
the predictions were filled to the letter. Mr. Congreve
states that when Mrs. Dryden commenced in labor or
her son Charles, Dryden left his watch in charge of one

of the ladies in attendance with a strict injunction to
notice the exact moment of the child's birth. In about
a week after her confinement Mr. Dryden took the oc-
casion to tell his wife that he had calculated the child's
horoscope and observed with grief that the child was
born an evil hour. That Jupiter, Venus and the Sun
in
were under the earth, and the Lord of the ascendant
all
was afflicted with a hateful square-of Saturn and Mars.
He went on to tell her that if he lives to arrive at his
8th birthday he will come near to a violent death,
but if he escapes that, and I see but small hopes that
he will, in his 23rd year he will again be under the
same evil direction, and if he escapes that also, the
33rd and 34th years will, I fear There he was in-
terrupted by the grief of Lady Dryden, who could no
longer hear one calamity after another prophesied for
her new-born son.

"When young Dryden arrived near his 8th year, it was

arranged that Lady Dryden should spend the summer
vacation with her Uncle Mourdant, and Mr. Dryden was
invited to the country seat of Earl of Berkshire, his
brother-in-law, to spend his vacation." (It appears from
the account published that Dryden had two sons, John
and Charles; it was arranged that each of them should
take one of the boys. Lady Dryden wished her husband
to take John, as she desired to have Charles with her,
feeling that he would be safer under her maternal care
than in his father's company.) "But Dryden insisted on
taking Charles, and they parted in anger."

On the child's 8th birthday it was arranged by the

Earl of Berkshire that his guests should go hunting,
and Dryclen, to keep the child out of mischief, set him
a double lesson in Latin, with a strict injunction that
he should not go out of the house. Charles was per-
forming- his duty in obedience to his father, but as ill-
fate would have it, the stag made toward the house, and
the noise, alarming the servants, they hastened out to
see the sport. One- of the servants took young Dryclen
by the hand and led him out to see it also; when just
as they came to the gate, the stag, being at bay with
the clogs, made a bold push and leaped over the court
wall, which was low and very old, and the dogs, follow-
ing, threw down a part of the wall ten yards in length,
under which Charles Dryclen lay buried. He was imme-
diately dug out, and after six weeks' languishing in a
dangerous way, he recovered. In the 23rcl year of his
age Charles fell from the top of an old tower belonging
to the Vatican at Rome, occasioned by a dizziness with
which he was seized, the heat of the day being exces-
sive. He again recovered, but was ever after in a lan-
guishing, sickly state. In the 33rd year of his age, be-
ing returned to England, he was unhappily drowned at
Windsor. He had, with another gentleman, swam twice
across the Thames, but returning a third time, it was
supposed he was taken with a. cramp, because he called
out for help, though too late. The father's calculation
proved but too prophetical."
Some people will say. What is the use calculating
horoscopes when the fate is inevitable and cannot be
avoided, or in any way warded off, even when the nature
of the accident and the time of the event has been pre-

dieted? But the reader ought to bear in mind that the

aspects in this nativity are what are called marked.
The mere expression of Mr. Dryden's that "the child
was born in an evil hour (meaning an evil planetary
hour) Venus, Jupiter and the Sun were all under the
;

earth, the ascendant being afflicted with a hateful square

of Mars and Saturn," alone proves that he was an As-
trologer,and also that the child had a marked horoscope
and that it would die a violent death. It also shows
that the ascendant was what is termed the "Giver of
Life," and being so afflicted, it was almost impossible
for the native to die a natural death. Therefore, in
horoscopes of this kind, the stars are said to rule or
govern the native, and the native does not rule the
stars, but he is controlled by them to a great extent.

Horoscopes like that of Charles Dryden are the ex-

ception and not the rule, but when we meet with them
there is nothing more convincing of the truth of As-
trology. Indeed, in this kind of nativities, Astrology
becomes a positive or exact science, and in such cases
it almost useless fighting against fate. In the case
is

of young Dryden, although he had wealthy, kind and

indulgent parents, also servants to take special care of
him, yet those servants went and led him into the very
evil they were charged to guard him against. With
such "unfailing experience," no wonder when such men
as Sir Isaac Newton, John Kepler, Cardinal Richelieu
and John Dryden could see such convincing proofs of
the truth of Astrology that they should look upon the
science of Astrology, as we look upon A, B, C, or the

English alphabet, as merely the elements of language.

But the real science of language only begins when we
associate these letters into syllables and words, and
associate meanings to words, and then associate words
into sentences, and these sentences into paragraphs,
etc.
William and Robert Chambers, in their Encyclopaedia,
say that:
"Astronomy, or the knowledge of the stars, was till a
very recent period cultivated mostly with a view to
judicial Astrology," and that "this (Astrology) was con-
sidered the higher or real science," and as Richard A.
Proctor says: "That throughout the long period, to
be measured by thousands of years, when all men held
this belief, the most part held what anciently had been
the belief of all," and "to this day, are not all languages
permeated by the expressions belonging to the old as-
trological teachings?"

Cipher Code Used By Ancient Scientist Is Explained To

Bacon, the thirteenth-century philosopher, which has
revealed Bacon knew of the telescope, microscope and
sciertific facts hitherto supposed to have been unknown

until centuries later, was made tonight before the

College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Addresses were made by W. M. Voynich of London,

owner of the Roger Bacon manuscript in which the key
to the code was found, Prof. Romaine Newhold of the
University of Pennsylvania, who is working on the
cipher, and Prof. C. S. McClug who is assisting Prof.
Newhold.
"At present it is only possible to conjecture at the
extent and importance of the discoveries," said Prof.
Newhold, " for the art of reading the cipher is yet in
its early stages and it is not certain that the whole
manuscript can be read.
The manuscript falls in four divisions he con-
tinued, "dealing with plants, the heavenly bodies, the
generation of animal life and preparation of drugs. The
common link connecting all four is probably Bacon's
interest in the prolongation of human life."

"Plants are discussed because of their medicinal prop-

erties;stars because they determine a man's character
at his birth and influence him throughout life; embry-
ology because of the bearing on later life of all factors
influencing conception, and pharmacology because drugs
are essential to the cure of disease."

"We are losing all our secrets in this shabby age,"
an architect said. "If we keep on the time will come

(The secret of the ancients' success is astrological,
and to the students of Astrology it is easily revealed.
Men of modern days, although having superior ad-
vantage of scientific inventions, cannot equal in many
ways ancient skill, because they ignore the point to
which the ancients paid great attention, that is, the
choice of an auspicious time for the commencement of
their undertakings so as to be assisted by Nature's vib-
rations in their efforts. Where moderns have paid at-
tention to this matter they have been amply rewarded

for their pains, witness the Greenwich Observatory,

which has given useful service or over 400 years. It
was built by the Astronomer Royal, Flamstead, after he
had erected a horoscope to direct the time of building.
The chart hung over the door for many years as a
testimony and example for those who could discern.
The dates given in first few pages of the "Bulletina"
each month are intended to help in just such ways to
work in conscious unity with Nature. Of course, those
who are capable of using their own horoscope in con-
junction therewith have an additional advantage.

EXEUNT "A M." AND "P. M."

So far as railroads, telegraph companies and the

postal service are concerned, France, some years ago,
said farewell to the system of dividing the day into two
parts sf twelve hours each.

The hours are now numbered from 1 to 24 and "a.

m" and "p. m" are matters of record no longer. The
new style was tried out in connection with telegraph
service and proved so satisfactory that its adoption be-
came general to the extent named.

There seems much to commend the departure from

long established custom — and no good argument against
it, except that it would "seem to strange" for a time.

In the Evening Telegram of April 16, 1912, we see a

picture of Uncle Sam decked in mourning and crying,
as he gazes far out to sea. Reference to the "Astrolog-
ical Bulletina" for April, under head of "Influence of
'
Planets/' page 96, we find "Sorrow for oar country . . .

many sudden deaths."

The steamship Titanic left Southampton April 10th

on her maiden voyage, narrowly missing a collision
with the liner New York before leaving port.

About 10:25 Sunday night she struck an iceberg 450

miles south of Cape Race, off the Grand Banks, and
sunk a few hours later, causing great loss of life
and property.
When the new age has fully dawned such catastrophes
will not occur, because ships will be launched as well as
named auspiciously, instead of otherwise.

Had the owners of the Titanic consulted a reliable

Astrologer and launched the ship at a time shown as
favorable according to the science of Astrology, the
ship would be afloat today and would eventually prove
valuable property.
Not only was it amiss to improperly time the launch-
ing, but also to unfortunately name the vessel.

The name "Satanic" would have been no more unfor-

tunate than the name "Titanic," for the sum of the
value of the letters in each equals 13 symbolized as
a skeleton with a scythe

on May 31st, 1911.

Experience is a costly teacher, but it teaches well.

It seems a pity, however, that so many lives should be
sacrificed to ignorance, or of Nature's law.

conducted so as to insure public safety. A very good
law would be to require all vessels to have painted on
the bow a horoscope for the time of launching. Such a
law would develop two good results: First, owners
would see that ships were launched at good times, so
as to have good horoscopes; second, people could take
their choice of vessels for travelling according to how
their own horoscopes harmonized with those of the
ships. Having launched the ship properly, they would
name it appropriately, and disasters would be reduced
to a minimum.

ASTROLOGICAL COMMENTS ON THE STEAMSHIP
"TITANIC" DISASTER
(Dis-aster — meaning Ill-starred)

The old saying might be remembered that

"Birds of a feather flock together," and in such cases
as this some are irresistibly drawn so as to be in the
catastrophy, while others change their plans at the last
moment and avoid the trouble. It would be found that
the horoscope of each person drowned had a strong
testimony for violent death, and, could their "progressed
charts" also be examined, they would show the planet-

ary affliction falling due at that time.

It will be noticed that when the boat struck and

sunk the Moon was in the "watery" sign Pisces. The

solar system has just left that sign, through which it
has been passing the last 2160 years, and it is now
entering Aquarius. Does this great disaster symbolize
death to the old age and the birth of the new? If so,
it also symbolizes death to unearned increment, for in

the New Age wealth will not be confined to the few,

but will be much more evenly distributed. One of the
notable features of this disaster was the death of a
number of the world's wealthiest men.

ANENT PLANETARY HOURS.

Several methods of Planetary Hour arrangements
have been devised of late years and it has been our
pleasure and privilege to examine and try each one,
finding that they all possess some merit but none stand
the continual test, as do those of the ancients, and
come out accurately. The trouble with the new offer-
ings in this line is that they mostly try to conform with
even hours of clock time. Clock time, is an artificial
division of the day for business purposes and has noth-
ing to do with the natural day which begins at Sun-rise
and ends at Sun-set; the days being longer in Summer
than in Winter.
The Ancients werecareful observers of Nature and
they, used the natural day as a basis for
therefore,
"planetary hours." They used these ''hours" with great
success in the science of medicine, for' the administra-
tion of potions and for the gathering and brewing of
herbs. In "Horary Astrology," also, was the planet
ruling the hour of the figure used as a ruler.

to test the ancient system many hundreds of times and
have found that when working with nice calculations
requiring scientific results we must have recourse to
the Ancients' system of time division for the Planetary
Hour.
Anybody can make alittle research or investigation
of the matter and satisfy themselves both as to the
accuracy of the system and the ultility of the "hours."
For instance, at 11 A. M., on Saturday, May 4, 1912, at

Portland, Ore, (Lat. 45 degrees N.), a party called us

up regarding a printing job. Reference to the planetary
hour tables will show Mercury ruling that hour. Cor-
rect, as Mercury rules literature, circulars, etc. We
next look to see how Mercury is aspected that day, re-
ferring to either the "Bulletina" or to an ephemeris,
and, as we find Mercury well aspected on that date we
accepted the proposition and consequently profited
thereby.

THE MOON AND URANUS
The Moon conjunction or parallel Uranus is not al-
ways adverse; for instance, it would be good happening
in the horoscope of a person who delighted in romance,
adventure, excitemen, changes, curious and occult sub-
jets, because this aspect would bring them a period
of the very things they wished for and enjoyed. This
would especially be true if happening in the 1st, 3rd,
5th or 11th house of the nativity.
If the aspect occurred in the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 10th or
12th house it would bring difficulty, trouble or sorrow,

according to the house occupied; if the 2nd, financial

anxiety; 6th, physical indisposition, changes among
employees; 8th, sorrow through sudden deaths; 10th,
danger of business reversals, or social discredit; in
12th, secret difficulties of a nature indicated by the
houses Moon and Uranus ruled, viz., 2nd house, by
financial affairs; 3rd, brethern or neighbors; 4th, do-
mestic; 5th, speculation, love affairs or children; 6th,
sickness or employes; 7th, marriage, partnership or

law suits; 8th, by deaths, or legacies; 9th, religious

matters or foreign affairs; 10th, business credits; 11th,
friends, acquaintences; 12th, things of obscure or sub-
tile nature with probably no real foundation for worry.
Fear of imprisonment.
The Conjunction or parallel occurring in 4th house
would promote change of residence, which might be
beneficial or otherwise according to whether or not
Moon or Uranus was dignified in the Sign which oc-
cupied the 4th. If they were in a Sign in which they
were neither dignified nor debilitated, judge for the
better, because Moon is naturally at home in the 4th
house, regardless of the Sign. (Moon ruling Cancer,
the 4th Sign of the Zodiac.)

This configuration occurring in the 7th house might

not be altogether adverse as it might indicate the part-

ing of the ways between two who were not entirely har-
monious. Among those who were single it might indic-
ate a union of great fascination or union of one who
was greatly interested in progressive movements. But
in the realm of business it could indicate sudden and
unexpected opposition, likely by municipal or federal
authorities or trouble with transportation companies;
changes among partners. Adoption of radically new
policies.
In the 9th house, this aspect would cause interest in
foreign affairs, a desire to travel, and if in a movable
sign would indicate a sudden journey, likely to another
country, beneficial or otherwise according to whether
these planets were dignified or debilitated by being

in the Sign on cusp of 9th, and according to the indi-

cations of the 9th at birth. It may also indicate some
complete change of attitude and thought regarding re-
ligious or scientific subjects, and increase the imagina-

tive and intuitive faculty which, to a writer, would be
very good.
Thus we see that whether or not the effect of Moon
conjunction or Parallel Uranus would be adverse de-
pends largely up on the stage of progress of the in-
dividual concerned. To an orthodox person, a stickler on
conventionalities, some of its effects would be looked
upon with horror, while another person, more advanced,
would revel in the vibations.
"All things work together for good to those who
love the Lord" (law). "There is nothing evil, but think-
ing makes it so."

Regarding the "house" in which this aspect occurs:

if the Progressed Moon is meeting the Progressed
Uranus then the house in which it occurs in the Prog-
ressed chart is to be considered.

If the Moon is making this aspect to the radical place

of Uranus as it was on birth day, then this house in
the natal chart is the one to be considered.

Influence of Moon's Transits in the 12 Houses.

The advantage of knowing Moon's place and aspects,

as connected with your. Nativity, lies in the fact that it

has much dominion over the general daily affairs. When

we see the Moon forming a certain aspect, we can judge

its effect, and when we know in advance what causes
and effects will be in operation it gives us the oppor-
tunity to choose or decide on our mode of action.

study of public affairs, matters of mental enlighten-
ment and breathing exercises, as it affects the lungs;
favorable for practice requiring dexterity of hands or
fingers.

In fourth house arouses interest in the home, the
place of abode, and family or domestic affairs and also
matters connected with land or property. This location
of the Moon conduces to thoughts of change, if only
to changing things about the house. It affects the

breast and stomach and one should be careful in eat-

ing and drinking.

In fifth house gives a speculative tendency, an incli-
nation to take chances, to favor romance, gaiety and
the society of younger people. It conduces to happi-

ness, mirth, a sense of freedom and increase of the

affections.

In sixth house conduces to matters of employment,
employes, labor, food, clothing, animals or sickness. It
inclines to physical indisposition so that care should be
given to hygienic methods. Overwork or over-indul-
gence in any way is likely to result in sickness affect-
ing the stomach and bowels.

In seventh house awakens interest in matters con-
nected with partners, associates, marriage, opponents,
and dealings with others. Unions, partnerships, etc.,
undertaken when Moon is in this house are subject to
changes and therefore care should be taken not to be-
stow too much confidence in the steadfastness or con-
tinuity of deals with others.

In eighth house — with the majority of people the

transit of Moon through their eighth house is not very
perceptible in effect but it inclines to attention to mon-

etary affairs or financial conditions of others or the

money of partner or associate, and it causes the mind
to revert to those who are dead. It is a good time to

enter silence for the purpose of psychically commun-

ing with those in the spirit world (choose the planetary
hours of Moon or Venus.)
In ninth house — turns the attention to higher chan-

nels of thought, matters of education, spiritual or

psychical unfoldment and thoughts of journeys or rem-
iniscence of distant scenes. Impressive dreams, when
Moon is in this house, are usually prophetic.
In tenth house — inclines to business activity in a
professional way or with professional people. It con-
duces to change in business methods or pursuits and
brings up matters connected with honor, credit or ad-
vancement. Interest in mother's welfare and also that
of the Government or that of the President.

In eleventh house usually brings one into contact
with others in a social way, opens up feelings of so-
ciability, and interest in friends. It usually sets up new
hopes and wishes and revives old ones.

In twelfth house gives interest in occult affairs or
matters of a secret or mysterious nature. It is apt to
bring to the fore any restrictions or delays which annoy
the native, but by silently entering the inner self the
Moon here is likely to shed light into the deeper re-
cesses so that the way may be seen to extricate one's
selffrom difficulty and become released from bondage
of any sort.
The foregoing delineations are the combined influ-
ences of the Moon and the house it is transiting
through without consideration for any aspects which
might be formed. An aspect would modify or accent-
uate the conditions as stated according to whether
a favorable or adverse aspect.

All the planets affect the house of one's nativity

through which they may be transiting.

The Moon transits through all the houses of a nativity
in about 27% days.

Mercury, Venus and Sun take about a month to go

through one house. Mars takes about six weeks; Jup-
iter about one year; Saturn about 2% years; Uranus
about seven years; Neptune requires fourteen years
to go through one house. Owing to various reasons
the planets may take a less or greater time than stated.
If an intercepted sign is in any house then the planets

will require about a double length of time to go through

it.

About the Effects of Transits.

Ques. Will the Transit of Moon or any planet over
Radical or Progressed planets have effect when there
is no Progressive aspect in force at the time of Transit?

—
Ans. Yes. Transiting bodies crossing over the
horoscopal places of other bodies or over important
places in the horoscope such as Sextile, Square, Trine
or Opposition to any planet have a very sensible effect
regardless of whether or not there may be any "direc-
tional" aspect on at the time. The principal differ-
ence between a Transit and a Direction is not in effect
but in the duration of the effect, for Transits come and
go in much shorter time than Directional aspects. Also,
the effect of a Direction is more noticeable when there
is a Transit to the Progressed or Radical planets in

question.

Transits, Adverse and Good.

Ques. — What effect has an adverse Transit over a

Good Progressed Aspect?
Ans. —To answer we must use an il-

good Directional aspect
would be Venus progressed sextile Sun progressed and
an adverse Transit would be the coming of Saturn to a
conjunction Venus, but, Saturn would at the same time
be in Sextile to Sun, which is a good aspect. This
transit would have the effect of delaying for the time
being the influence of the good aspect between Venus
and Sun, as set down in the regular cannons of Astrol-
ogy and would produce disappointments in matters
ruled by the House of the chart then occupied by this
transiting Saturn. The good aspect of Sun standing by
would prevent any very serious results from the transit
of Saturn over Venus. The good aspect of Saturn to
the Progressed Sun would tend to benefit matters ruled
by the House occupied by this Sun. On the other hand,
a good transit over a good Direction would accentuate
the favorable vibrations of the Direction and it would
be especially noticeable on the days when the Moon
also by Transit formed good aspects to this combina-
tion.

Transits Over Ascendant and Midheaven.

Ques. Have transiting planets any effect by as-
pects to the Ascendant or Midheaven?
—
Ans. The most important part of a House in a
chart is the cusp and aspects to the cusp of any house
must effect it in kind. The most important cusps are
the 1st and 10th, in Nativities, and the most important
transit is the conjunction. Minor aspects by Transit
have little appreciable effect.

Ques. —Does the Conjunction or opposition of two or

more planets in the current year have any effect in the
Radix or the Progressed chart of an Individual?

Ans. Such configurations have effect on individuals
in whose charts they may fall on the place of planets,
cusps or important places in the chart, same as a
Transit.

Length of the Effect of Transits.
Ques. —How long does the effect of a transit con-
tinue?
Ans. — That depends upon two things. 1st, which
planet doing the transiting, for each planet moves
is
through the zodiac at its own rate of motion, the Moon
being swiftest and Neptune slowest, their order of speed
being, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune. The second consideration in the
length of effect of a transit is whether or not the tran-
sitor turns retrograde before it gets out of orb of as-
pect with the transited. It frequently occurs that a tran-
siting planet comes up, to a point, turns retrograde and
recrosses that point, and, turning direct in motion,
crosses it for the third time, thus affecting that place
or planet three times as long as usual. Look in the
ephemeris and count how many days it requires for
the transitor in question to traverse 8 degrees preced-
ing the exact aspect. After the aspect is complete, the
effect quickly diminishes, unless the transitor turns ret-
rograde and goes back over the aspect. It takes Nep-
tune several years to form and complete an aspect,
while Venus or Mercury would cover the same amount
of longitude in a few days. During a period of good
"directions" the potency of good transits is enhanced
and the evil of adverse transits diminished, and vice
versa. Favorable and unfavorable days may be known

Effect of Latitude and Longitude on an Aspect.

Ques. What effect has difference in Latitude or
Declination upon the force of an Aspect.

Ans. Latitude is distance from the Ecliptic or
Sun's path and when planets in zodiacal aspect have
the same degree of Latitude the effect of the aspect
is stronger than if the degrees of Latitude were widely
separate.
Declination is distance as measured from the ce-
lestial equator. Planets having the same degrees of
Declination are Parallel, regardless of what zodiacal
aspect they may be in. When planets are Parallel and
at the same time in Aspect it is best to interpret the
effect in terms of the Aspect, remembering that the
aspect is particularly strong because of the Parallel.

About Progressed Aspects.

Ques. In the progressed chart does Sun P. in con-
junction Mars radix have same effect as if Mars P.
came to conjunction Sun radix? F. C. M., Alliance,

Ans. As far as the influence of the conjunction
itself is concerned there would be little if any differ-
ence. But a difference would manifest due to the
fact that in the first instance the Sun would bring
effects of the particular house which it ruled, while
in second place in similar manner Mars would bring
up effects coinciding with the things of the house
which he ruled and in both cases they would act
through matters ruled by the house in which the con-
junction occured. The radical planet in both cases

Directional Aspects of Venus.

Ques. Venus is never more than 48 degrees from
Sun, and therefore can form but conjunction, semi-
sextile and semi-square aspects; can the Sun or Venus
make a square or trine or opposition by "direction" to

Ans. Yes, by direction Sun moves one degree per
year (Venus almost the same), and in 60 years would
be sextile to its radical place, square in 90 years and
trine in 120 years. Pew people live to see the trine, and
none the opposition. Suppose that Venus was conjunc-
tion Sun at birth and suppose also that by direction
it moved away at rate of one degree per year, we would
find as follows: 30 years, Venus semi-sextile Sun radix;
45 years, semi-square; 60 years, sextile; 72 years, quin-
tile; 90 years, square, etc.

The average motion of Venus is between 1°.02' and

1°.22 / per day (per year, by direction).
The
48° limit you mention between Venus and Sun
isby transit: by "direction" in the proressed horoscope
no such limit exists, as here explained.

Moon's Motion by Direction.
Ques. —What difference is there between Moon's mo-
tion by direction and that of the planets? Jessie A.

Ans. — The Moon's average monthly motion by direc-

tion the progressed horoscope being between one

degree and one degree five minutes, it is quite likely

to form and leave a number of aspects during the year,

but the remaining planets, because of their slower
rates of motion, form their aspects slower and require
a greater length of time to complete and pass them;
thus, for instance, Jupiter approaching Saturn would
consume a number of years in completing the conjunc-
tion, during which time the native would profit by
matters of land, property, etc., except in the months
when Moon formed adverse aspects to these two; vice
versa, the profits would be especially agreeable in
the months when Moon formed favorable aspects to
them. Transits of other planets to the place to these
two would affect in a manner similar to that just stated
regarding Moon.

About Parallels and Aspects.
Ques. —
Can a planet be both in opposition and paral-
lel with another planet at the same time? L .0. G. —
—
Ans. Yes, an opposition and a parallel can occur
simultaneously because the aspect of opposition is in
LONGITUDE, while the parallel is in DECLINATION.
Such a coincidence has the effect of acentuating the
influence of the ASPECT.
Whena Parallel and an Aspect occur simultaneously
the former is expressed in the term of the latter, i. e.,
the parallel will take on the nature of the aspect.

Latitude and Longitude in a Progressed Chart

Ques. — In
a progressed horoscope for a person living
abroad do you think it would be better to make the
chart according to the latitude of the altered locality
instead of that of the birth place? H. M. M.

Ans. — It is certainly not at all proper to change the

latitude for making a progressed chart to suit the new

locality for the reason that if one did so it would

change the period of the falling due of espects of plan-
ets to house cusps, which were "cast" by nature to
fall due at a certain time in the native's life.

The following example will serve to illustrate why

is should not be done:
Suppose a person born in 56 degrees north latitude
found Leo 18 degrees on the progressed ascendant and
Saturn 3 degrees away at Leo 21 degrees, showing that
in three years more the ascendant would be in con-
junction with Saturn. This not being to his liking he
resolves to travel south at the rate of one degree of
latitude per year and thus always keep Saturn from
forming that baneful conjunction! Or he could take
a more extended journey and travel at once to 22 de-
grees north latitude, which would give him Leo 2 de-
grees on the progressed ascendant, leaving Saturn 19
degrees (or years) to the rear, in which event Saturn
doubtless would become entirely discouraged and give
up the chase! An easier and cheaper way to sidetrack
Saturn in such a case would be to simply change one's
birth time and thus have some other sign rising alto-
gether and never let Saturn get anywhere near the
ascendant! This matter is also treated in "Practical
Astrology for Everybody."

ever, parents will consciously choose opportune times
for the birth -of their offspring and thus improve Nature
just as we now improve vegetable growth by planting,
etc., at auspicious times.

Using Sideral Time.

Ques. How should one proceed to erect a horoscope
when the birth time is exactly 12 o'clock noon? A. —
Covell.
Ans.—As the Sideral Time is given in the ephemeris
for each day at noon, no calculation to it is necessary
when the birth time is also at noon, because that given
sideral time is the sideral time at birth anu is used
exactly as it is to enter a Table of Houses to find what
signs and degrees to put on cusps in the chart. After
making the map look in a Table of Noon Marks, for the
terrestrial longitude of birth place, and note the time
given there, and by that you can tell how much before
or after noon mark birth occured; then allow a cor-
rection to each planet's ephemeral place for its motion
in that amount of time, inserting them in chart when
thus corrected.

House Cusps.

Ques. How may one be sure of which side of a
house cusps to enter a planet in chart?
—
Ans. To help in determining which side of a cusp
to place the planet and have it located in proper house

When a planet's degrees are more than the degrees
on cusp it has already crossed over and gone beyond
the imaginary line.

When a planet's degrees are less than the degrees on

cusp it has not yet reached the cusp and is placed in
space preceding cusp and if not within eight degrees of

but is read as though already actually in the house

Ques.— Suppose that 12 degrees of the sign Cancer

is on cusp of 12thhouse in a chart and that Neptune
is at 9 degrees, retrograding, which house is Neptune
in, 11th or 12th?— F. E.
Ans. — The
orb of the cusp of a house is 8 degrees
and when any planet is within that number it is in
conjunction with that cusp, regardless of whether or
not the planet is retrograde; therefore, in this case
Neptune would be read as in 12th house, but placed
just before the cusp, in the 11th house.

The Ascendant.

Ques. Is the "ascendant" a point of division between
the 1st and 12th houses in a horoscope?

Ans. Yes. — The ascendant is always that point on

the eastern horizon, where the Sun appears to rise
every morning, and where signs and degrees of the
zodiac appear to rise in rotation. Properly, the "as-
cendant" is that sign and degree which is exactly on
the eastern horizon at moment for casting the chart,
although a planet is said to be on or in the ascendant

when within 12 degrees above the rising or within 20

degrees below it.
In all branches of Astrology the sign which may be
ascending, and the planet that rules it, have an impor-
tant influence in the reading of the chart; to obtain a
correct ascendant it is necessary to have the correct
time, date and place of birth.

consideration the fact of the earth turning on its axis,
making a complete revolution every twenty-four hours.
As the Earth goes round the Sun it also turns on its
axis, which causes the Signs of the Zodiac to appear
to Ascend over the Eastern Horizon at the approxi-
mate rate of one Sign every two hours; the twelve
Signs all cross over the Ascendant in twenty-four hours,
hence, it is necessary to know the TIME of birth in
order to know what Sign is crossing the Ascendant,

How to Distinguish Whether a Planet is Applying to or

Separating From an Aspect.

Ans. Points in the Zodiac which are certain num-
bers of degrees away from a given place therein con-
stitute angles which are called aspects, each angle or
aspect having a distinguishing name. Suppose that the
ascendant of a horoscope is the 8th degree of Sagit-
tarius, then 60 degrees on either side of that point
would be the 8th degree of Aquarius and the 8th degree
of Libra. If some planet was between the 1st and 8th
degree of Libra or Aquarius it would be applying to or
forming the Sextile aspect, but if the planet was more
than 8 degrees in Libra or Aquarius (say between 9th
and 16th degree of either Sign) it would have past the
point of aspect (the 8th degree) and would be leaving
or separating from the aspect.

It isof great importance to note whether an aspect is

forming or is past; forthcoming conditions are told by
aspects forming; past conditions are told by aspects
separating. In other words, find the aspect from any
given place in the Zodiac then note whether or not the
aspecting planet has passed that point. The subject of
aspects is thoroughly taught with the illustrations in
Lesson 5 of the "Astrologian Outfit."

Ans. —Yes. In the birth chart aspects that are sepa-

an influence upon the individual, but not such a strong
influence as if the aspect were forming. All natal
aspects, whether forming or separating, have some
bearing upon the mind and physical state; they give
tendencies to the direction of metabolistic activity,
tendencies and direction to cell-activity which are cast
or moulded at the time of birth, and perpetuated
throughout the life, unless modified or changed by an
effort of will.

The aspects which manifest most strongly are those
which affect the planets in the radix or birth chart.
Aspects made by transiting planets are just as effective
as aspects made by "progressed" planets, but their in-

FORMING and they do not wait to act after an aspect
has culminated and is waning; consequently, in the
"Bulletina" and the "Guide" the aspects are quoted for
the days on which they are FORMED, unless, as on rare
occasions, there is reason to believe that an aspect will
retain an influence some time after culmination because
of being sustained by other aspects of similar quality

Take, for instance, the Moon conjunction Sun, it is

complete at 8:32 A.M., Greenwich time, or 2:32 A.M.,
American Central time, Monday, October 3, 1910. That
is to say, it culminates or completes at 2:32 A. M. Mon-
day, and from then on diminishes, but it has been form-
ing and growing stronger all day Sunday, therefore,
Sunday, as the Bulletina says, and not Monday, is the
day to act on this planetary vibration, otherwise, if we
just went by the Ephemeris without making this time
difference we would be trying to act on Monday upon
an aspect that had already passed, unless we acted be-
fore 2:32 A.M.

The Ruler of Pisces.

Ques. Which planet rules Pisces, Jupiter or Nep-

Ans. —Referring to the planet Jupiter and Pisces
would say, before Neptune was discovered, September
23, 1846, Jupiter was assigned the rulership of the sign
Pisces. Astrological text-books to that date quoted it
as such, as have a few since that time, and astrologers
of the old school naturally use it in that manner. How-
ever, since then later observation and investigation
warrants the assignment of Neptune as ruler of Pisces
and text-books of late years teach it in this way. Jup-
iter doubtless is powerful for good when in Pisces, but
Neptune's influence more closely resembles and har-
monizes with that sign.

Upon investigation made by us during the past

decade and recently on behalf of the Llewellyn College
of Astrology, we satisfied ourselves with the accuracy
of the new arrangement.

Ans. — Yes, observe the same rule in that respect as

you would making a "Nativity" but only in the

cases where birth occured since Nov. 18, 1883, when
the change in time took place. This is a very import-
ant consideration and should be closely observed; neg-
lect of this may cause the cusps of houses to be wrong
between one and six degrees The rule for changing
Standard to Mean time is thoroughly treated and il-
lustrated in the "Improved Perpetual Planetary Hour
Book."

Birthmarks and Rectification.

Ques. Are birthmarks reliable for finding the ascend-
—
ing sign when hour of birth is unknown? F. C. Mar-
chand.
—
Ans. Birthmarks alone are not sufficient for deter-
mining the ascending sign, but indirectly they assist
in the process. For instance, persons born with Uranus
ascending usually have some peculiarity about head or
face; they usually have a peculiar arrangement of fea-
tures, giving an out-of-the-ordinary countenance or else
have some defect. In one such known case the person
has but one ear drum, the one on right side is missing:
also the person has a cow-lick, which makes the hair
part to the left instead of the right, as is usual. Thus,
it is seen, when certain physical peculiarities are
known, such as birthmarks, they are used as an aid to
other testimonies for finding the sign which was ascend-
ing.
There is as yet no set rule for knowing what sign was
ascending, in the absence of the birth time, but any one

well versed in the science, possessing sufficient infor-

mation regarding a native, should be able to determine
it, and after the sign has been found the regular rule
of applying arcs of events will bring up the right degree
ascending, from which is then derived the time of birth.

True Places of Hyleg.

Ques. I have noticed some disagreement as to the
places for Hyleg; how do you account for this? Surely,
all cannot be right. —

Ans. —Hylegiacal places are 1st, 7th, 9th, 10th and

11th houses. They begin, according to Ptolemy, from 5
degrees above the eastern horizon and extend to 25
degrees below it. The dexter sextile and square of
these 30 degrees, which is the 11th and 10th house
from 5 degrees above their cusps to 25 below; the 9th
and 7th are taken from the five degrees below their
cusps to 25 degrees above. They take precedure in
the order first named. Ptolemy is taken as the authori-
ty on Astrology, as Webster is on language. Where
any difference is found from the above rule it is usual-
ly a misprint rather than a change of rule.

Horary Chart Time

Ques. Which js the best time to make a "Horary/'
when the idea first strikes you, or the thought of mak-
ing a chart about it, which was not until the next day
after? H. H. M.
Ans. —
It is not the chart which determines the out-
come of any idea, event or proposition, the chart is
but to read and interpret the planetary influences
which were in operation when such idea or event took

place. The proper time to erect a chart, then, is for

the time of the origin of the matter. But in the case
where one writes, to an astrologer and asks a question
about some matter it is proper for the astrologer to
erect a chart for the moment of learing of the affair,
i. e., time of reading the letter and handle the subject
as though the querent was there in person asking the
question, therefore using latitude of that place, viz.,
the astrologer's latitude and longitude. This is presum-
ing that the matter is new to him, that is, born to him
then, but if the matter is one of common public in-
terest and is therefore, not then new to him, or he
has cast a chart -on the same identical matter before
then it is not proper to make a second chart for the
same matter, but render the answer from the original
map.
When writing to an astrologer about any matter the
querent should carefully state the time and place of
the origin of the idea or affair so that the chart can
be made for that date, but if that time is not known
exactly the querent should not write until urgently
impressed to do so and should give the time, date and
place of writing, as the chart is to be made from this
data in preference to that time when read by the
artist.

The Earth and the Zodiac
Ques.: When I went to school we were taught that
the ecliptic was the path of the Earth around the
Sun which puts the Earth's place 6 months different
from the Sun's place as given by Astrology. Will you
kindly explain?— C. C. M.

Ans.: Astrology does not conflict with Astronomy

but really accurately conforms therewith. It is usually
easier to understand the apparent phenomena rather
than the actual, i. e., the Earth actually travels in the

ecliptic or zodiac around the Sun at the rate of one

sign per month, but no one can sense or see this Earthly
movement, for to all mundane appearances the Earth
is standing still, but by looking at the Sun that orb
SEEMS to travel through the ecliptic, consequently we
refer to the Sun as being in a new sign each month
and it is left for the student's understanding to know
that the Earth is in the opposite sign. For instance,
the Sun is in Aries between March 21 and April 19th
and the earth at that time is directly opposite in Libra
, but to the earthly observer the Sun is in Aries and to
designate the Earth's place between those dates we
say "Sun in Aries." We
could just as correctly say
"Earth in Libra." It is the Sun's place that is most
important as it gathers the influences of our opposite
sign and showers it upon the Earth during the month
of its apparent transit therethrough.

Astrology, as we teach it, is Geo-centric because we

take a view of the ecliptic in this way, rather than
viewing it from the Sun, and all the planets' places
are tabulated in a chart from a Geocentric stand-
point, and, it is a striking fact, that observations of
planetary effects bear out the propriety of this method
better than by applying planets' places as they relate
to the Sun, (Heliocentric), consequently Astrology as
taught by all schools anl practical representatives of
the science is Geo-centric .

Moon in the Signs

Mr. Ludwig Johnson asks, "How can I know when

the Moon is in a 'fruitful' sign?
Reference to the first chapter in the "Bulletina" each
month will show which sign the Moon is located
in

The "fruitful"' signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Barren signs, Gemini, Leo Virgo. Masculine signs,
Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius. Femi-
nine Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces.
It is a good idea to committ these to memory.

Quality of the Moon's Phases.

Ques. Does the fact of the Moon being New or
Old, or in 1st, 2d, 3d or 4th quarter, make any differ-
ence in its effects on aspects with other planets?
Ans. — During the 1st and 4th quarter or phase the
Moon "Dark," while between the 2d and 3d quarters
is
it becomes "Full." Doctors in hospitals and insane
asylums have noted that the patients are more restless
at "full" of Moon than at any other time in the month.
During "full" it is receiving the greatest amount of light
from the Sun and shedding it upon the earth and the
effect of its aspects with other planets at this time must
be more noticeable upon us than during the "dark."
Generally speaking, the best time in the Moon's phases
is between the beginning and end of the 2d quarter
( between 7 and 14 Hays old, care must be taken, how-

ever, to avoid the Square and the Opposition which

usually occurs on the 7th and 14th day), for it is then
in the "new" and is "increasing" and its influence is
most potent.

ent upon whether or not the luminaries at their con-
junction form any aspects to planets in individual na-
tivities. When the new moon occurs in a good place
in your horoscope, and in good aspect to some of your
radical planets, it betokens that the month, summed
up in a general way, will prove fortunate. The contrary
is to be judged when the lunation occurs in adverse
aspects to the radix, and the evil is magnified should
the lunation be an eclipse.

The characteristics or rulership of the "house" in

which the lunation occurs determines the sources from
which good or evil may be most expected, as in the
2nd house, financially; 11th House, by means of friends;
etc.

Ans.: There are four triplicities, composed as fol-
lows: Fiery, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius; Earthly, Taurus,
Virgo, Capricorn; Airy, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius; Wa-
tery, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

There is a harmony existing between signs

of the
same triplicity and it is well to memorize them
for fu-
ture reference as their use is involved in various rules
in the different branches of Astrology. For instance,
people born in one sign are generally harmonious with
the people born in the other two signs of that same
triplicity. This is an illustration only, rather than a
hard and fast rule, for the horoscope of two people
should be consulted according to regular rules in order
to determine the advisability of partnership or mar-
riage.
In alchemy, chemicals ruled by one sign have affinity
for elements ruled by the other two signs of the same
triplicity.
In astro-meteorology they help in determining the
state of weather, hot, cold, windy or wet.

pared with "fruitful" signs.

Exaltation

Ques. —Why are planets said to be "exalted" in cer-

tain signs and not in others, such as "sun exalted -in
Aries?"

Ans. Exaltation is a dignity for a planet next in vir-
tue to its being in own home sign. It has certainly been
observed that the manifestation of the power of benefic
planets is increased, and the evil of malefics decreased
when in certain signs other than those which they rule,
and thus when in these signs they are said to be exalted.
The exaltations are as follows: Sun in Aries; Moon in
Taurus; North Node in Gemini; Jupiter in Cancer; Nep-
tune in Leo; Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted in
Virgo, giving it a double dignity when in that sign;
Saturn in Libra; Uranus in Scorpio; South Node in Sa-
gittarius; Mars in Capricorn; Uranus in Aquarius, which
it also rules; Venus in Pisces.

In Horary Astrology when the querent's ruler is ex-

alted in signifies the person to be in good circumstances
and well esteemed; one commanding and not to be
easily overcome; vice-versa when the planet is in its
"fall."

Ans. The "accidental dignities" (positions in
houses) of planets coincide with the "essential digni-
ties" (locations in Signs) about as follows:

Planets angular in chart are about the same in

strength as though in home-sign or exaltation; planets
in succeedent houses, are about the same a^s though in
detriment; planets in cadent houses are about the same
as though in fall. There are exceptions to most all
rules. The 3rd house rules the ordinary or objective
mind, speech, expression, whether by sound, by writing
or movements of the hands or eyes. The planet Mercury
rules the same, therefore, when it is in the 3rd house it
is "accidentally" in a place which freely permits the
exercise of its natural qualities and it is therefore
stronger therein than otherwise, and stronger than any

Progressing the Chart

Question: Which is the correct way to make a Pro-

gressed Chart for 20 years of age? Some say add 20°
to the radical Midheaven, and some say add 20 days
after birth. I notice that these two ways often bring

different degrees on house cusps. F. C.
Answer: One day equals one year, but one degree
does not equal a year in Nature. Sideral Time is so
gauged as to encompass a year of 365 days, but a zodiac
of 360 degrees is 5 days short of the number of days
to a year. To make a Progressed Chart count in the
ephemeris the number of days after birthday to the
number of years desired and with the sidereal time as
given there make a chart in the usual manner and it
will represent the conditions for coming 12 months.

Intercepted Sign and House Cusp

In the case of an "intercepted sign" in a horoscope,

is the lord of the intercepted sign, or the lord of the

sign on the cusp, the ruler; of the house? H. C. P.

Ans. The strongest part of a house is its cusp, and
in the case of "interception" the planet ruling the sign
on the cusp is given precedence. The planets ruling
both signs are lords of the house, and in matters relat-
ing to that house both planets must be considered. The
planet ruling sign on cusp is given precedence, provided
the other planet is not more "dignified" by its location
in sign, house, "exaltation," aspect, etc.; for instance,
the precedence might be reversed if ruler of cusp was
"cadent" (in 3rd, 6th, 9tlij or 12th houses), and in its
"detriment," while the planet ruling the intercepted sign
was "exalted" and angular (in 1st, 10th, 7th or 4th
houses).
The "Dignities of Planets" are given in a table in
"Practical Astrology for Everybody," and "interception"
is considered under heading, "Signs and Houses."

Ans.: Thousands of years of observation, compari-
son and record among Astrologers shows that there is
a corresponding vibration, a harmonious condition ex-
isting between the Zodiacal signs and the planets,
hence, such planets are said to "rule" or be at "home,"
"exalted," or "detrimented" in the various signs, ac-
cording to their nature.
Metals associated with the Zodiacal Signs are as fol-
lows: Aries, iron-steel. Taurus, copper. Gemini,
quicksilver. Cancer, silver. Leo, gold. Virgo, quick-
silver. Libra, copper. Scorpio, iron-steel. Sagittarius,
tin. Capricorn, lead.Aquarius, aluminum and platin-
um (notice how platinum jewelry has come into vogue
since the advent of the Aquarian Age). Pisces, ruled
by Neptune, god of the sea, is not known to have asso-
ciation with any metal.
As compared with the spectrum and the rainbow,
planets are considered as associated with the colors as
follows: Sun, orange. Venus, yellow. Moon, green.
Jupiter, purple. Mars, red. Saturn, blue. Mercury,
violet.
The attributes endowed by the influence of the planets
may be considered as follows: Sun, firmness, mag-
nanimity. Moon, changeable, maternal. Mercury, in-

quisitive, restless. Venus, gentle, amorous. Mars,

martial, active. Jupiter, dignified, learned. Saturn,
meditative, serious. Uranus, curious, inventive. Nep-
tune, psychic, idealistic.

and Full Moon favorable which has no adverse

or Pisces, the benefit is enhanced. Those who are
bothered with ingrowing nails should be careful never
to trim the nails during decrease (going down) of
Moon, i. e., from Full to New, or in other words, dur-
ing third and fourth quarter.

Difference Between Common Almanacs and Astrology

Why is there from 1 to 3 days discrepancy
between the Moon's Signs as given in Astrological
works and common Almanacs. Subscriber. —
Ans.: —Astronomerscalculate the Moon's place not
which is a belt
in the Zodiac but in the Constellations,
with the same names but is not coincident with the
Zodiac, there being a difference of as much as sixty
hours in advance. Almanacs usually give the Moon's
place as per the Constellations, which are incorrect
for planting or other Astrological purposes.

Ans. When a planet is retrograde the matters or
things with which it has correspondence do not go for-
ward with so much dispatch and profit as otherwise;
hence, it is usually best to wait until such planet is
favorably located. When Saturn was in Leo, a barren
sign, we had a very dull realty market for two and one-
half years, but when Saturn entered Virgo, an earthly
sign, the market at once responded and it reached
its best for top prices in 1921, as Jupiter draws near to
Saturn in same sign.
'Saturn is "exalted" in Libra so real estate markets
should be good while Saturn transits that Sign, as it
does in 1922-23. However, if one has good indica-
tions for success in dealings in property in their
natal chart, I would not say to wait, but rather take
every opportunity to buy and sell, and by the time of
top price one should have made a tidy sum for their ef-
forts and have money to do still bigger things. One can
do these things best if they understand how to make
and read their own horoscopes and follow the recurring
conditions as applied thereto.

Ans. An old Astrological aphorism is: "The better
the day the better the deed." The important feature
about an advertisement is the day that it is read. If
I were handing an advertisement to an editor I would
first look up the good days to Mercury and choose the
ones on which there were no adverse aspects to Mars,
Saturn or Uranus, and tell the editor to run the notice
on those days. Those days could easily be picked from
the "Planetary Daily Guide for all." The people who
read the advertisement on those good dates and who
acted upon their impulses to answer it would gain.

Thus you would be helping the "other fellow" as well

as yourself, your dealings would be amicable and sat-
isfactory, tending to lessen that much of the discords
in the business world caused by those who are con-
stantly rushing into action without knowledge of the
duly timed influence of Cosmic laws.

Those who think "there is nothing in it" should try

placing the advertisement so that it was read only on
days marked adverse to Mercury, and on same days
adverse also to either Mars. Saturn or Uranus. They
would have plenty of occasion for regret or remorse
on account of the delays, extra labor, expense, annoy-
ance or loss that would be encountered.

was in a moist or watery sign, such as Cancer, Scorpio,
or Pisces.

the ground in 4th or last quarter of the
Moon, when is in a "barren" sign (Gemini, Leo or

Virgo). In the "Planetary Daily Guide" are two tables;
one shows the phases or quarters of the Moon; the
other table shows what sign the Moon is in each day.
For instance: Table on page 62 shows last quarter
from 7th to 13th, August, 1920; the table on page 60
shows Moon will be in Gemini on 9th and 10th of
August; in Leo on 12th and 13th, of the year 1920.
Just as there are certain DAYS on which the Moon
may be in barren or fruitful signs, so are there months
when the Sun is in such. From July 23rd to August
22nd each year the Sun is in Leo (one of the "barren"
signs) hence, a tree will soon wilt if barked, as stated,

during this month, when Moon is decreasing and also in

a barren sign. To make the job still more effective do
the cutting in "Planetary Hour" ruled by a malefic

meris, shows no adverse aspects to Mars, Saturn or

A. M.; 1:07 to 1:59 P. M.; from 7:53 to 8:51 P. 1YL; and
again from 3:38 to 4:45 A. M., in Latitude 40.

The first hour, 7:01 to 7:53, would be the best to

choose, as the Sun is then on the Eastern Horizon, the
point from which its vibrations are most powerful,
Astrologically speaking.

As you do not give date of birth we cannot
say what sign rises at 6 p. m.

People sometimes think that the day of the week

on which birth occurred will be a "lucky" day; or,
the day of the week ruled by the planet which rules
the sign of the zodiac in which they were born. But
if one certain day is likely to be more "lucky" than
another it will be that day ruled by the planet most
fortunately configurated in the natal horoscope. The
days of the week are named after planets, thus: Sun-
day, Sun; Monday, Moon: Tuesday, Mars; Wednesday,
Mercury; Thursday, Jupiter; Friday, Venus; Saturday,
Saturn. As Uranus and Neptune are the octaves of
Mercury and Venus, respectively, in such matters as
this they are assigned Uranus to Wednesday, Neptune
to Friday. In Astrology it is quickly seen that "lucky"
days do not happen by chance— in fact there is no
"chance"; there is well regulated, duly timed opera-
tion of nature. Fruitful (lucky) days are the result of
fruitful planetary aspects. Students can easily learn

how to pick out, in advance, the days which will be

most beneficient by examination of their natal chart
compared with current (transit) movements of the
planets. In the absence of a chart a great deal of
information can be derived about the quality of days
by reading the daily indications in the "Bulletina" mag-
azine.

Planets and Prayer

Quest. To what planet should I pray to bo healed
of a sickness? Subscriber A. O. S.

Ans. Do not pray to any planet. Pray to that
which you know as God. But pray at an auspicious
time, i. e., when the air is impregnated with har-
monious influences for the matter desired. In thie
case of a sickness first choose a day when the Moon
is in conjunction or in sextile or trine with the planet
that rules the part of body mainly affected and then
choose the hour of that day for your prayerful medita-
tion which is ruled by that same planet. For instance,
if afflicted by some disarrangement of the action of the
liver choose the days of good aspects to the planet
Jupiter and on those days meditate, pray and auto-sug-
gest in the planetary hours of Jupiter. If troubled
with the knees, choose a day when the Moon is sex-
tile or trine to Saturn.

On days when such planet is adversely aspected by

a square or opposition little or no headway can be
made in the overcoming of the trouble and the stu-
dent may feel well pleased if no ground from pre-
vious effort is lost, but if any attempt is made at con-
centration it should be in the hours ruled by benefic
planets but not in the hour of the one afflicted.

Another good way to treat through zodiacal influ-

ence is to note each day the sign which the Moon

occupies and the part of the human body ruled by that

Sign should be treated by auto-suggestion in the hours
of the day ruled by the planet which rules the Sign
that the Moon thus occupies. As the Moon transits
through the twelve signs in one month every part of
the body is treated in orderly succession. Prayer,
meditation and suggeston are powerful factors when
utilized at the proper times.

To study parts of the body ruled by the twelve

zodiacalsigns and the planets the student will find
almost any text-book of astrology useful.

Uranus the Upheaver
The terms "upheaver,"
"revolutionize?,"' "regen-
erator," etc., to the planet Uranus
have been applied
because its influence is seen to cause such radical
changes in whatever domain his influence manifests.
In the horoscope of an individual where Uranus has a
dominent position, such as in the Ascendant, it produces
characteristic tendencies which mark that individual as
being "out of the ordinary" in many respects; he may
manifest the Uranian influence in various ways; may
be given to invention, to investigation, being curious to
know the so-called unknowable; will be ever trying to
make improvements, to undo old methods and establish
new conditions in whatever fields of endeavor he may
be interested.
The advanced Uranian individual will be more in-
terested in the welfare of others tharu in himself; will
turn his efforts so as to benefit the many, rather than
a few close associations; thus his interests become
cosmopolitan and humanitarian, while his methods of
operation or achievement will be original and unique,

going about the matter, not through some regularly

organized or municipally conducted charitable associa-
tion, but on broader and more independent lines. He
will be found active in the meetings and teachings of
the various Advanced Thought Movements and in many
ways trying to further the comfort and progress of the
masses.
The Uranian individual who is not particularly ad-
vanced, but who is living the more personal life will
express the influence of Uranus in many minor ways;
he will be often making little improvements about his
place, will be quite "cranky" at times; often erratic,
acting with surprising suddenness and seldom with ma-
ture premediation; he will be intuitive and will act upon
impulse; will have some extreme views; some strong-
prejudices and attractions.

The "National" influence of Uranus is equally as in-

teresting for study as is its effects upon human ten-
dencies, and in either case there is no end to the study
— the* last word cannot be written.

When Uranus, by its regular transit through the

Zodiac enters a sign which rules a certain country,
those who are observant readily discern its effects upon
that country. For instance, during the seven years be-
tween 1912 to 1919, inclusive, Uranus was transiting
through the Zodiaical Sign Aquarius, the Sign which
rules Russia and the coincident upheavals which have
taken place are well known.
Uranus next enters Pisces for a transit of seven
years. 1920 to 1927.

Pisces is said to be the Sign
ruling Calabria, Galicia in Spain, Normandy, Nubia and
Portugal. Pisces probably rules other countries not yet
recorded Astrologically. The determination of Sign
rulership of countries and cities is, as yet, very incom-

plete, a great deal of observation and investigation still

being required. The cities coming under the influence

of Pisces are thought to be: Bournemouth, Christ-

church, Cowes, Farnham, Grimsby, Lancaster, King's
Lynn, Preston, Southport, Alexandria, Compostella,
Ratisbon, Regensburg, Seville, Worms. It will be no-
ticed that these are all foreign places, all old estab-
lished places. Our own country is comparatively young
and our cities comparatively new, many of them
"springing up over night," as it were, hence not afford-
ing the opportunity for the loag periods of observation
necessary to determine tHeir ruling Zodiacal Signs.
But this will come in the course of time if Astrological
Students everywhere will devote some attention to the
matter and have it for discussion at their Society meet-
ings.

Cities Are Influenced by the Signs
Suppose that; the Sign ruling every city was known;
suppose that some individual suffering severe afflictions
was told to go away for their health; that person could
be correctly advised to go to some place which was
under the benign influence of Jupiter, whereas, other-
wise, he might unfortunately go to a place under the
influence of Mars or Saturn, and become worse off than
before.
Those who would like to make a study of town ruler-
ship would do well to procure the little book by H. S.
Green, entitled "Mundane or National Astrology," price
75 cents, L. N. Fowler & Co., 7, Imperial Arcade, Lon-
don, E. C, England, or it can be obtained from the Book
Department of the Llewellyn College of Astrology.
In one of the chapters devoted to this subject we find
the following list, but we question a few of the assign-
ments and believe they are open to further investiga-
tion. For instance, Chicago is given under Leo, but we*
believe it should be further investigated, as there is
much to be said about its coming under the dominion of

the Sign Cancer.

Again, the people of Wales not look or act like

Gemini; they much more resemble Taurus. The beau-
tiful city of Los Angeles resembles Leo or' Libra more
than Virgo. Detroit, the home of that Great Aquarian,
Henry Ford, probably comes under the influence of
Aquarius; during the transit of Uranus in Aquarius
Detroit became the recognized center of the automobile
industry. (Between 1912 and 1919.)

Portland, Oregon, divided in two by the Willamette

is
river: the east side formany blocks back from the river
was swampy or boggy (now nicely filled) the location
;

of many machine shops and lumber mills (ruled by Mars

Mars rules Scorpio). The influence of Scorpio is seen
on the West bank of the river also, extending along
Front Street particularly, where we see the junk dealers
and the machinery houses (ruled by Mars).
The balance of the West side is evidently governed
by Sagittarius, judging by the topography, as it raises
steadily and becomes high hills, where the majority of
the wealthiest people (Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius)
have located and built the finest residences.

When Uranus transited through the sign Sagittarius,

the old cable car up the "Heights'" was discarded and
the electric (Uranus) system installed over a new route.
Also, the work was planned and begun of sluicing off
the top of Willamette Heights for the purpose of locat-
ing Westover Terrace, the present site of the most
magnificent homes (Jupiter).

Some years ago when Mars was transiting the sign

Scorpio, a huge water main on the East side burst and
—
inundated a large portion of that district a martian
manifestation. Thus, when we refer to Portland's sign
we need to designate the East side as Scorpio, and the
West side (west of Front street) as Sagittarius.

The whole matter of sign rulership needs much dis-

cussion and we shall be pleased to hear from all stu-
dents who have made investigations along these lines
and hear the results of their observations.
The transit of Uranus through Pisces should furnish
some interesting conditions for study along these lines.

Anent Sign-Rulership
We are much interested in "sign rulership," so
respond to your invitation in the February issue of the
"Astrological Bulletina," 1920. We are satisfied that
the Sacramento Valley is under the rule of the sign
Leo, as the entrance of Neptune into this sign was
coincident with the eruption of Mt. Lassen, which, by
the way, is not dead, showing signs of activity just
recently. We are also convinced that this city is under
rule of same sign, for the following good reasons:

Shortly after coming here, December of 1911, we made

a careful inquiry among the members of the first town
board, deciding from these interviews that sign Leo
was Lincoln's Ascendent. The following list of events
prove this to be correct:

June of 1917 Saturn entered sign Leo, a little over

three months after the United States declared war upon
Germany. Then came the "draft" and about all the
young men eligible of this city and vicinity were
"drafted." On July 29th, 1918, at 15 minutes to 5 A. 1VL,
P. S. T., this city was next hard hit by the almost com-
plete destruction of the Pottery Works of Gladding,
McBean & Co.. the largest pottery on this coast. From
this time on there was an exodus of laboring people and
skilled artisans, this causing about 80 houses to be
vacated All this being quite a blow temporarily to our
business men, a decided Saturn depression.

Shortly after the demise of my father Feb. 27th. 1919,

we put out the following- prediction to the effect that
beginning practically Aug. 1st, 1919, with Jupiter enter-
ing the sign Leo, and running to August of 1920. with
a possibility of the effect being felt for two years more,
Lincoln would experience a GREAT BOOM Our
prophesy is being fulfilled to the letter, as up to Aug.
1st building was going on rapidly at the pottery, and
with the completion, then, of the big steam terra-cotta
presses, there began an increased demand for laborers.
The pottery has contracts on hand now for building
material covering three years in the future. We have
just voted favorable on bonds for a new Town Hall,
which is to include a theater, council chamber, dancing
floor, etc. Are about to vote on bonds for a new Gram-
mar School. Vacant houses mentioned all full and
houses in great demand. But for the high cost of mate-
rial a building boom would have taken place last fall.

In all the above we are convinced of having presented

an Al example of "sign rulership, "showing the method
by which sign influence on cities, towns and localities
