First B. E. Examination November 2016

2x13/CE 2403: Engineering Mechanics
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 100 Min. Pass Marks: 35
Note: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and carries
3, 3, and 4 marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (10 marks each) any one of them is to be
attempted. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

b. Name any two methods for finding member forces of a truss.
c. Explain Varignon’s theorem of moments.
d. The following three forces act on a point: 190N (due south), 82N (due east), and 73N
(North-West); Determine the resultant of above forces.
e. Write the assumptions made in the analysis of trusses by method of joints and explain
the procedure for analysis.
a. Define centroid of a plane area?

passing through centroid.
a. What is meant by a perfect frame?
3. b. Draw a neat sketch of simple gear train.
c. Discuss in brief method of section for analysis of a truss.
d. Derive the expression for the length of belt in a simple open belt drive.
e. Determine the magnitude and nature of forces in the various members for the Truss
shown in figure 3.
