Elementary Class Newsletter

January 22, 2018

This is our 20th week of the school year (counting holidays), with 19 weeks
to go. 19 weeks down and 19 weeks to go ... so welcome to halfway!

*Thanks to the expansion, class is finally able to start at 9:30 a.m. sharp! In the
past, due to the fact that the elementary classroom doubled as the cafeteria, it
was always difficult to start on time in the mornings. Now that the classrooms and
common area are separated, we are able to take advantage of every minute of our
4 hours of instructional time each day. We are very excited to settle into this flow
together.

*Weren't the kids terrific Saturday night?! Our annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
event was a sweet celebration of social justice and self-esteem. A BIG THANK
YOU to all who baked cakes, made Ethiopian food, worked the door, set up the
sound system, did the dishes, cleaned, memorized quotes, sang, cake-walked,
boogied to Lovebush, painted, drummed and drew, and supported our students.
After expenses, we earned $600! We will keep $300 for the Dome School and
send $300 to Ancient Ways, an Oregon-based nonprofit that supports a variety of
projects in Zimbabwe. The Dome School has been donating to Ancient Ways for
many years, and we're proud (and relieved to be able) to give again this year.

* Dance-a-Thon Pledge Sheets go home today! (See attached). This is our first-
ever Dance-a-Thon. Yes, it's yet another fundraiser, but the main intention isn't to
see how much money we can raise; it's to see how much we can dance!! It's going to
be a high-fun, low-stress dance party for the kids in two weeks (Saturday,
February 3, 12pm-6pm). We'll keep 50% of monies for the Dome School and give
50% to the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance. (volunteers needed!)

* Peacemaking Progress: Children are barometers of the surrounding atmosphere,

so it's no surprise that conflicts between the children escalated in October,
November, and December -- when everyone was over-ready to move into the new
classrooms and every day was a negotiation with patience. In the three weeks
since the expansion's completion, the number of violent conflicts has been
zero. Something has shifted, and it's beautiful. It is likely a combination of quieter
classrooms (which have dramatically improved children's ability to focus and follow
directions), the expansion (providing more space for our physical and energetic
spirits!), the creation of clear and consistent consequences (which have given the
children more boundaries), and the passage of time (trust and friendship don't
happen overnight).

*The new classrooms have also helped the first and second grade students to
appreciate the value of quiet time. We have been practicing meditation and we are
up to 20 minutes! WOW! And meditation doesn’t have to be practiced only at school
either. Meditation can help us find peace and progress in difficult situations. We
hope to establish a time for the upper elementary students to join us at least once
a week.

*Lower elementary is finally diving into the ocean this week. We are starting with
“What do we know?” and “What do we want to know?” wonder boards. The children
will pair up or do individual research on an ocean animal of their choice, to be
presented to their class. Parents are invited to stimulate their children’s curiosity
and excitement about their animal, as well as encouraging them to be confident
enough to present to the class.

* A message from Costa Rica! Alalana Hawkins Garnier, one of our children who
spends the winters in Costa Rica with her family, has written us a letter! The
letter is posted on the bulletin board!

* The 3rd-5th Homework Meeting is postponed to accommodate parent schedules.

Next week's newsletter will share the new date.

* Kaci is away this Friday, taking her family to a waterslide park for Ryan's 45th
birthday. Melissa will substitute teach with the 3rd-5th grade students.

*Save-the-Date Reminders: Dance-A-Thon (Sat. Feb. 3, 12-6 p.m.); Mardi

Gras (adults-only, Sat. Feb. 10, please volunteer!); School Board Meeting (Wed.
Feb. 7, 3 p.m.); "The Bug Guy" free after-school assembly (all ages, Wed. Feb. 21,
3 p.m.), Oregon Battle of the Books, in Medford, for upper elementary and
secondary students (Sat. Mar. 17 times TBA) Takilma Community Building (TCB)
Grand Opening (Sat. April 28)

Enjoy the sunshine and have a marvelous week!

Love,
Taryn, Kaci, Chad, and Melissa
