TERMS OF REFERENCE

On 7th of September 2016, Mrs. Faizah Mohd Noor, the English for Report Writing lecturer
(EWC 661) had instructed Muhamad Afiq bin Abd Karim, Azmi bin A.Matali, Muhammad
Zubair bin Abdul Basit and Wan Muhammad Haslah bin Jamaludin from the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering, University of Technology MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam to write a report
on The Study of Unhealthy Lifestyle among students of UiTM Shah Alam.
ABSTRACT

Well versed that most of students are neglecting the importance of healthy lifestyle while
studying in the universities. Students of UiTM Shah Alam are part of the students who
neglect the healthy lifestyle due to several other priorities. Thus a study in conducted to
determine the trends of UiTM Shah Alam student are taking things for granted regarding
their lifestyle, the reasons and their awareness. It was found that 75% of students are not
having enough sleep is because of the study and assignment with 18% playing video game
way passed their bad time.6% of the respondents taking part in co-curicular or club
activities, another 6% have part time work and 2% of respondents are taking part in sports
activities. Besides not having enough quality sleep, students also skip a number of meals
and lack of exercise. Most students know and aware about unhealthy lifestyle however, only
a few knows how to discipline themselves of having healthy lifestyle.
1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the study

Most of the students in University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam need to
maintain their lifestyle during studies. Unhealthy lifestyle will give a negative
impact to the students. Many programs have been conducted for student to stay
healthy such as ‘Sukan Antara Fakulti (SAF)’ which is conducted by UiTM for the
students. However, not many students involve in this kind of activity. A healthy
lifestyle is important to the students for them to start their daily routine as a
student with a smile. Improving a lifestyle is thought to be one of the most
effective means to improving their studies and to make a bright future to the
students. Student needs to learn how to manage their time wisely for their
benefits. Unhealthy lifestyle may give a significant effect to the students and
their studies. This time management is important for them to stay healthy and
avoid any disease and sickness.

1.2 Problem statement

Mostly students need to rents a house with their friends outside of the campus.
Students have to live separately with their family and this will affect their daily
routine. This routine if not well organize by the students itself it will became
habit. If they have a healthy lifestyle habit, it is a good news to us because their
lifestyle will affect their studies in a good ways. But, unhealthy habit among
students nowadays became familiar with the students. Thus, this study is to
determine the trends, reason and their awareness of the unhealthy lifestyle
among students of UiTM Shah Alam.
1.3 Objectives of the study

The objectives of the study are as follows:


 To study trends of unhealthy lifestyle among students UiTM Shah Alam.
 To determine the reasons for doing unhealthy lifestyle among students
UiTM Shah Alam.
 To study the awareness of unhealthy lifestyle among students of UiTM
Shah Alam.

1.4 Significance of the study

This study is conducted for the students, lecturer, and staff of UiTM Shah Alam
for them to determine the trends of unhealthy lifestyle among students in UiTM
Shah Alam and their reasons. This study will give a huge benefits to students and
all the staff of UiTM Shah Alam. The respondents can learns their lifestyle habit
and learn how this lifestyle will give an impact to their studies. The respondents
also can learn to manage their time wisely in order to do a healthy lifestyle. This
study is also important for the lecturer to determine their student performance
and their lifestyle habit.

1.5 Scope and Limitations

This study involves with 50 respondents from various faculties at the UiTM Shah
Alam and the instrument used in this study is questionnaire. The limitation of this
study is the time limit given to complete this study. Other than that, we need to
make sure our respondents are doing unhealthy lifestyle. Otherwise our
experiment will have a difficulty to find an answer to our study. Lastly, we need
to make sure our respondents understand the questionnaire given to them.
2.0 METHODOLOGY

2.1 Research Instrument Used

The way we used to collect the data was a questionnaire. The purpose is to survey
the unhealthy lifestyle among student UiTM Shah Alam. The questionnaire has 15
questions and elicited information such as their trend of unhealthy lifestyle,
awareness of their unhealthy lifestyle and the impact of their unhealthy lifestyle.

2.2 Research Respondent

The number of responden take part in this survey were 50 UiTM Shah Alam students.

2.3 Research Procedure

50 questionnaires were distributed to respondents from the various faculties at Uitm


Shah Alam. The respondents we choose randomly. The respondents must answer in
front of us, so if they don’t understand they can ask.

2.4 Data Analysis

The data we collect were analysed from frequency count on percentage then we
transferred to suitable table and chart. So we can understand the result efficiently.

56% of respondents slept 5 to 6 hours per day as shown in Figure 3.1. 24% of them slept
around 7 to 8 hours. 12% slept in duration of 3 to 4 hours per day. Followed by 6% slept 11
or more hours and 2% slept around 9 to 10 hours per day

Most of respondents preferred to sleep at night with 54%. Followed by 20% prefer to sleep
in the afternoon while 14% of them preferred in the evening. Finally, 12% of them prefer in
the evening.

The most skipped meal by respondents was breakfast with 59%. Next, 19% of respondents
skipped lunch and 8% had skipped dinner. However, 14% did not skip any meal at all.

The top criteria rank by respondents was quantity with 32%. Meanwhile 26% of respondents
ranked price as the criteria for the meal chosen and followed by nutritional with 24%. Finally,
18% ranked taste as the criteria for the meal chosen.

62% of respondents did exercise or played sports. Meanwhile 38% of respondents did not.

38% of respondents did not exercised at all in a week and 32% of respondents exercised 3 to
4 hours per week. Beside that 10% of respondents did exercised 1 to 2 hours and 7 to 8
hours per week. Besides that, only 6% of respondents exercised 11 or more hours per week
and 4% exercise 5 to 6 hours per week.

75% of respondents did not have enough sleep because of study and assignment. After that
18% of respondents played video games. 6% of respondent did not had enough sleep
because they were part time worker and involved in club or co-curricular activity. Finally
only 2% of respondents did not had enough sleep because of sport activities.

48% of respondents skipped a meal because they had study and assignment. After that 22%
of respondents played video games as the reason for skipped meals while 20% of
respondents skipped meals because of the food location so far. Besides that only 2% of
respondent skipped meals because they were part time worker and none of respondents
skipped meal because of sports activities.

66% of respondents did not had enough exercise because had study and assignments and
16% of respondents worked part time. After that 12% of respondents played video games.
Only 6% of respondents had co-curriculum activity.

4.0 CONCLUSION

The following are the conclusions of this study:

1. Students do not have enough good sleep at night.


2. Most students skip at least a meal a day.
3. Students mostly not able to do enough exercise weekly.
4. Study and assignments preventing students to employ healthy lifestyle.
5. Students already knew the unhealthy habits and aware of its effects.

5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

For students to improve their unhealthy lifestyle, our recommendation are as follows;

1. Students should have better time management in order to have quality sleep at right
time.
2. Students must have sufficient daily food intake and balanced diet in order to keep the
body in optimum health.
3. Students must manage their time accordingly to complete the assignment and tasks on
time.
4. Students should be more discipline of practicing healthy lifestyle as most of them
already aware of it.
