Things to do!
InView Test scores & MAP Math scores were sent home on Friday, Feb. 9th.
Check your child’s take-home-folder.
Be on the lookout this week for math checkpoints & Unit assessments! I
have kept these close by to help guide my instruction to best support
each child’s needs. I apologize for the delay of sending them home! Take
a look at the concepts your child is understanding, and concepts that you
may want to help support at home.
Continue reading at home with your child!
Looking Ahead (Please make sure you mark these days in your calendar! They
will be fun and important days!)
Current Learning:
Fundations: We are continuing Unit 9 this week. We will have our test on Friday.
This is a 2 week unit. Students will read and spell words with the 3 remaining r-
controlled sound combinations: er, ir, and ur. All three make the same sound.
The trick words for this unit are:
Week 1: picture, learn, earth
Week 2: father, brother, mother
PLEASE make sure you are practicing these words and patterns with your
child every night. This will support them when they READ and WRITE!! It’s SO
important!
Math: We took our Unit 5 Post Test on Friday. This week we will complete Unit 5
with a focus on algebra. Students will observe and describe arrangements in
sequences of geometric arrangements of Unifix cubes, pattern blocks and tiles.
They will search for patterns and generalizations that will enable them to build
and sketch succeeding arrangements. They will then use words or numbers to
describe arrangements in the sequence that are too big to build, and explain
how they can determine the number of objects (colored tile, pattern blocks, or
unifix cubes) it would take to make any arrangement in the sequence.
In Number Corner, we have been working on telling time, fractions and quick
facts! The quick facts are timed checkpoints for mastery (2 minutes) that support
fluently adding/subtracting. The pace of these quick facts are student driven. If
your child has mastered counting on facts, they will move forward to doubles,
doubles plus or minus one, make ten, add ten, add nine, and leftovers. These
are all of the strategies that we continue to learn and practice.
Writing: We will continue editing our opinion writing this week! Throughout this
writing unit, we have focused on studying characters, favorite parts, pictures,
titles/cover, lessons, and so much more! We have added helpful linking words
such as because, for example, another reason, also, etc. We focused on
making our writing stronger, longer and more convincing by introducing the
book, writing our opinion, giving reasons (because), providing evidence from
the text (for example), talking to our audience, adding sections or pages to our
letters, and using juicy story words. We have grown so much as writers in this
unit!!
