I’m Gary and I’m an auto-racing mechanic. As part of a team I am called upon to solve problems,
find practical solutions, and stay in touch with technology on a constant basis. My routine as a
racing mechanic is quite hectic. Before the races, most of my days are spent rebuilding cars or
repairing any damage that was done at the last event. I may also be called to travel with the team to
5 test facilities to determine how the vehicle will be set up for the next competition. On the day of a
race, I am up early and present at the track to deal with any last minute issues. After an event is
over, it’s back in the truck to take the car back home to the garage or perhaps right to the next

I am Sandy and I’m a personal trainer at a gym.
Every day I jog up to the gym at 7:30 am. I live a couple of miles away, and in my job it’s actually
okay to arrive looking a little sweaty. I normally schedule new customers at 8 o’clock. I start by
sitting down and going over their goals to get an idea about their lifestyle, such as the diet, stress
5 level, and average amount of daily activity. I ask about any other health risks to make sure I won’t
prescribe a program that might endanger their health rather than improve it. I draw up a
rudimentary workout regimen showing how he could achieve success in a relatively short period of
time and show them around the gym. At 9:30, I have my first regular client appointment. I usually
have another four client appointments throughout the day, finally finishing up with my last one at
10 2:30. I like having this early shift, because then I can get in a workout of my own, shower, and still
have the evening free to go out and have fun.

Naved Altaf, a Pakistani with a Masters in Information Technology (IT) was attracted to London
because he was told it is a quiet community, very family oriented and a good place to raise
children. He came to visit a brother in 2003 and returned to live here in the spring of 2006. With 15
years of IT experience, Naved expected it would be easy to get a job. After three months of full-
5 -time job searching, unsolicited calls and sending resumes to every IT organization in the area,
Naved found a job working as a support analyst at London Health Sciences Centre. He found the
job through a posting on Workopolis.com, an employment search and career planning website.
Naved cautions newcomers that although their education and skills may help you to win entrance to
a new country, those skills and education do not always help you get a job.

employment. Those with strong English skills will become employable much faster than those who
have only basic English skills. There are some jobs where English skills are not as important, but
they tend to be jobs that will not pay a very high wage. Written English skills are also very
important to many employers. Improving your English skills can take as long as two or more years.

Some people say that an English degree won’t help you get a job because it’s not a ‘vocational’
subject: it doesn’t teach you a specific skill for a particular kind of job. The people who’ll actually
be hiring you know better.
 What potential employers want most is someone with motivation, intelligence, and proven ability

The ability to communicate is also very valuable for almost any job. Studying English teaches you

discussions to develop your spoken communication skills.
All that reading is useful, too. Studying English literature at the degree level teaches you how to
