1. Simple introduction about the network equipments:
Mark this article
In the real life, when we design and set up a network, we need to use NIC,
Comment this article Switch, and servers and so on. Similarly the VMware Workstation also provides
us those equipments, but all of them are virtual equipments, although formally
Author : they are virtual ones, but about the functions aspect, they have no difference
with the real equipments. Now, you will see some network equipments which
Email : are provided by the VMware workstation.
Your comment :
1.1 Switch:

Exactly the same with a real switch, a virtual switch also can connect the host,
Comment this article the virtual machine and other network equipments together. After you install the
VMware workstation, the virtual switch will be created and used automatically,
In the Windows serial PCs, at most you just can use only 10 virtual switches.

But in the Linux PCs, you can use at most 256 virtual switches. With the virtual
switches provided by VMware workstation, you can connect one or more virtual
machines to the host or other virtual machines.

1.2 Bridge:

When you design and set up a network by using the “Bridge” between your host
and the virtual machines, the virtual equipment “Bridge” will be started
automatically, and the virtual “Bridge” will connect the Ethernet adapters to
your host’s physical Ethernet adapter, and also it can connect the virtual
machines to the LAN which your host located in.
The virtual machine which bridged by the “Bridge” also can become an extra
“real” PC in the network which your host located in; can obtain the IP address
which belongs to the LAN; can use all the services belongs to the network
including: printer, file servers, gateway and all other services. In the same way,
the host and any physical PC in the network your host located in, and all other
virtual machines can use the resources and the services provided by the virtual
“Bridge”.

1.3 NAT(Network Address Translation)adapter:

This equipment will be displayed in your host as: “VMware Virtual Ethernet
Network Adapter for VMnet8” after you installed the VMware workstation.
(Shown as the picture)

The NAT adapter provides the communication ports for the host and other
virtual machines which are also use the “NAT” network type, at the same time it
has the IP addresses conversion function. If your host connects to the network
via another Ethernet adapter, the “NAT” adapter can convert the virtual
machine’s IP address to an IP address belongs to the network which your host
located in for giving the access permissions about the exterior network’s
resources, including the virtual machines which can access to the other machines
by using the standard TCP/IP protocols.
For example, you can use the HTTP protocol to browse the web pages; use the
FTP protocol to transfer the files and use the Telnet protocol to log on to other
PCs.

(But the PCs which locate in the exterior network can’t establish the initiative
connection to the virtual machines, it means that you can’t configure the virtual
machines which belongs to the NAT network as the Web server for transferring
the web pages to the outside network’s PCs.)

1.4 Host-only adapter:

The host-only adapter is a standard virtual Ethernet adapter, in the host

operating system, it displays as “VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for
VMnet1” after you installed the VMware workstation software. (Shown as the
picture)

It only provides the data switching ports for the host and all the virtual machines
which use the “Host-only” network, so the networks which composed of the
host and the “Host-only” network’s virtual machines are the typical private
interior LAN.

1.5 DHCP Server:

The DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) service in the WMware

workstation will be installed automatically. It’s a kind of automatic-started
service. (Shown as the picture)

It will convert your host to a DHCP server, it can dynamically assign IP

addresses for the “Host-only” and “NAT” configured virtual machines.
Compare to the static IP obtaining method, it provides a simply and automatic
but efficient method for IP address.

1.6 Ethernet adapters in the virtual machine:

When you establish new virtual machine with the “New virtual machine
wizard”, whatever which type of network you selected and which operating
system you used, the VMware workstation will install an Ethernet adapter for

your virtual machine. It displays as: “AMD PCNET Family PCI Ethernet
Adapter” in your virtual machine. (Shown as the picture)

Most of the Operating Systems can identify this virtual hardware and install the
appropriate driver for it; this Ethernet adapter provides the communication ports
between the host and virtual machines and between the different virtual
machines.
