13.1 A medical inspector wants to estimate the overall monthly occupancy rates of the cancer
wards in 80 different hospitals that are evenly located in the northwestern, southeastern,
central and southern suburbs of New York City.
Stratified Random Sampling must be used in this case as Stratified random sampling divides a
population into subgroups or strata, and random samples are taken, in proportion to the
population, from each of the strata created. The members in each of the stratum formed have
similar attributes and characteristics. A simple random sample is then taken from each stratum.
In this case, the subgroups or strata are the various regions of New York: northwestern,
southeastern, central and southern suburbs.
The most appropriate sampling method in this scenario will be Cluster sampling ( Area
Sampling) because the scenario suggest the naturally located heterogeneous groups and
possibly the medical inspector wants the representation from each suburbs of New York City.
It can be stratified because- stratified are not natural group rather something developed during
the study and has similar features (features are important in stratified sampling). Here the
scenario mentions the naturally occurring suburbs.
13.2 A magazine article suggested that “Consumers aged 35 to 44 will soon be the nation’s
biggest spenders, so advertisers must learn to appeal to this over the thrill crowd.” If this
suggestion appeals to an apparel manufacturer, what should the sampling design be to assess
the tastes of this group?
Here, convenience sampling can be used. Convenience sampling is a non-probability
sampling technique where subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility and
proximity to the researcher. Since the target is to appeal to all people of age group 33 to 45, we
can choose the candidates randomly according to our convenience.
Convenient sampling is fine but this scenario has eligibility criteria which is that you need
consumers of age group of 35 to 44 so the first question would be are you between age group
of 35 to 44, so the sampling method would be judgment or purposive sampling method. Even
though, probability sampling method would always be preferable. Here, it is not possible
because it is not difficult in terms of time and cost to collect the name list of population
(Mention this too)
13.3 The McArthur Co. produces special vacuum cleaners for conveniently cleaning the inside of
cars. About a thousand of these, with stamped serial numbers are produced every month and
stored serially in a stock room. Once a month, an inspector does a quality check control on 50
of these. When he certifies them as to quality, the units are released from the stockroom for
sale. The production and sales manager, however, are not satisfied with the quality control
check since , quite often, many of the units are sold are returned by the customers because of
various types of defects. What would be the most useful sampling plan to test the 50 units?
In the given situation, systematic random sampling is the most suitable. Systematic sampling is
a type of probability sampling method in which sample members from a larger population are
selected according to a random starting point and a fixed periodic interval. This interval, called
the sampling interval, is calculated by dividing the population size by the desired sample size.
But, then rather than saying what systematic random sampling is, the good idea will be to give
reasons of choice.
The reason is as the company is trying to ensure the quality of vacuum cleaners, the systematic
random sampling will help in creating a restricted sample that could be checked in terms of
quality. This method will be biased free i.e. is accurate as well as high precision i.e. more
representative of the total products. Quality check control will be high .
