PEER REVIEW WORKSHEET

1) TITLE. Is the title of the essay interesting? Does it give some basic information

on the topic? Is it catchy? Give examples.

2) INTRODUCTION. Does the essay have a clear introduction? Does it include a

strong, clear thesis? Does it include information about the topic? Does it grab the

attention of the reader? Does it make you want to go on with the reading? Give

examples.

3) THESIS AND INTERPRETATION. Do the introduction and the essay as a

whole express a good, clear thesis? How does the writer support his/her claims?

Does he/she give enough evidence?

4) SUMMARY and CONTEXT. Does the author provide a detailed yet brief

summary of the text (trailer or commercial)? Why? Have you identified a

particular paragraph (or more) where the author gives some interesting

information about the time and situation when the text was released, or any other

detail that you think is relevant? What is it interesting about the text that the

author did research about? Give examples.

5) ISSUES AND THEMES. What kind of issues does the author identify? Do you

agree? How is the movie/TV show/book relevant and what does it tell us about

our times? Do you think the author of the text tackled on the issues professionally

and explained clearly how the text reveals them? Give examples.
6) ENTERING A CONVERSATION. Does the author reference at least two

sources, possibly a positive review and a negative review, and argue them? Does

the author place themselves into a debate between different reviewers?

7) FAIR AND BALANCED ASSESSMENT. Does the author provide a positive

assessment but also recognize what the text could do better? What are the flaws

of the movie/TV show/book?

8) CRITERIA. Does the author recognize the criteria that the text needs to meet to

please the intended audience and elaborates on how the movie/TV show/book

addresses such audience? Does the author recognize the criteria that the text

needs to meet its genre? Does the author state if the text breaks the rules of that

genre?

9) CONCLUSION. Does the conclusion wrap up the overall opinion of the author?

Does it restate the thesis by also mentioning some of the evidence that the author

elaborated on in the body of the essay? Is the final line good and punchy?

10) ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE. Can you identify a clear introduction,

body and conclusion? Is the essay organized in coherent, well-structured

paragraphs? Are they too long or too short, is there variation in the length of the

paragraphs, do they always end on a note that encourage the reader to go on?

Give examples.

11) DICTION & TONE. Is the tone professional, neutral and detached? What can

you notice about the word choice? Are the words that the writer uses strong and

accurate enough, do they represent the appropriate level of formality, is there


enough variation? Do you think this profile could be published on a local

newspaper? Give examples.

12) GRAMMAR, SPELLING, SYNTAX. Are there any grammatical, spelling and

syntactical issues? Are they common throughout the essay? Give examples.

13) FORMAT and CITATIONS. Is the format correct, clear, does it follow the

guidelines and MLA style? Are the citations correct?
