33 KV HV VLF TESTING

Reference Tests to be Performed

01 Phasing Verification
02 VLF High Voltage

1 PHASING VERIFICATION

1.1 TEST EQUIPMENT

Digital multimeter, jumper cable terminated by crocodile clamps, mobile telephone.

1.2 METHOD
The phasing will be checked for end to end correspondence via 33kV cable conductors. At one
end of the circuit Red Phase cable conductor will be grounded whilst Yellow & Blue Phase
conductors remain isolated from ground. At the other end of the circuit the grounded cable
conductor will be determined by the digital multimeter set to audible loop indication and
connected between ground and each cable conductor in turn. It should be found that Red Phase
cable conductor is grounded. The procedure is repeated for Yellow Phase cable conductor and
repeated again for Blue Phase cable conductor. If the same phase colour cable is found to be
grounded at both ends of the circuit in all three cases the phasing will be verified.
Where the cables terminate into GIS the connections to the conductors for this test will be made
either directly onto the termination upper metalwork (if the cable termination housing is open)
or via the circuit grounding switch external links.
Where the cables terminate into transformer cable boxes, connections to the cable conductors
will be made at the cable terminations top connections.

VLF HV Test Set Model HIGHVOLTAGE VLF – 6022 CMF; Connecting and Grounding Leads;
Warning Signs & Barricade Tape; Stopwatch; Temp/Hygrometer; Small Gauge Tinned Copper Wire.

2.2 METHOD:
At the remote end of the circuit the cable termination HV connectors/lugs
must be separated from grounded materials and one phase from another by at
least 25 mm per 10kV of the test voltage to be applied. The area around the
terminations shall be secured to prevent danger to personnel during the
testing. Warning notices and barricade tape will be used to define the
exclusion zone. A person will be stationed hereby to ensure that the safety
precautions are observed.

At the testing end the VLF HV test set will be prepared. The HV cable shields
must be grounded, preferably by the permanent means.

A safety zone will be established around the testing zone so that only
persons directly involved in the testing will approach the area.

The IR of each separate phase will be measured and recorded. If the circuit
consists of multiple cables per phase the cables of each phase will be looped
together by tinned copper wire attached to the HV terminal lugs.

The cores of the two phases not under test will be securely grounded. The
phase to be tested will be connected to the output lead of the VLF set.
Clearance of at latest 25mm per 10kV of test voltage must be observed
between parts to be subjected to the HV test and all other items and
materials.

The VLF set will be adjusted to the appropriate cable

capacitance setting,
Activate the VLF set and gradually raise the output voltage to 24kV. Start
the stop-watch. The leakage current will be noted at intervals. When the
specified test duration of 15 mins has elapsed reduce the output voltage to
zero and switch off the VLF set. Discharge the cable by application of a
ground lead before handling any connection.

The VLF set output lead will be transferred to the next phase cable(s) to be
tested and a ground applied to the first test group. The foregoing will be
repeated for the second and third cable groups.

Upon completion of HV testing the IR of each separate core will be
remeasured and noted on the test form.

2.3 ACCEPTANCE CRITERION:

No breakdown of insulation shall occur during HV testing.
