(I) INTRODUCTION:
Gorakhpur district is a district of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Gorakhpur is the one of the major and
largest districts of Uttar Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of the district Gorakhpur is a city
located along the banks of Rapti River in the eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located
near the Nepal border, 273 kilometers east of the state capital Lucknow. It is the administrative
headquarter of Gorakhpur District and Gorakhpur Division. The city is home to the Gorakshanath Temple
(Gorakhnath Math).
Gorakhpur was a part of the famous kingdom of Koshal, one of the sixteen mahajanapadas in the 6th
century BC. The earliest known monarch ruling over this region with his capital at yodhya was Ikshavaku,
who founded the solar dynasty of kshatriyas.
Gorakhpur is also famous for Chauri Chaura Incident during British period. On 23 August 1942, it also
witnessed massacre of many villagers and satyagrahis at Dohariya Kala, Village situated in Sahjanwa
Tehsil. This is the place where famous Indian Revolutionary Ram Prasad Bismil was hanged by
Britishers for Kakori Train Robbery case.
Gorakhpur has also a lake Ramgartal Lake, which is 18 km bigger. It is bigger than Dal Lake of Kashmir
which is of 15.5 km Ramgarh Taal. It's vast and provides home to various types of fishes.
The Gorakhpur district takes its name from Gorakhnath, who was a saint of the 'Nath Sampradaya'. A
famous shrine called Gorakhnath Nath was built in his honor at the location where he practiced his
austerities.
(II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL:
POPULATION:
According to the 2011 census, Gorakhpur district has a population of 44,36,275.
ECONOMY:
Horticulture, agriculture, forestry are the important economic sectors of Gorakhpur. The climate of
Gorakhpur makes it ideal for agriculture, which has been the major source of income for the city and its
surrounding regions. Apart from agriculture, there are a number of other industries that flourished here.
The soil of Gorakhpur is rich in salt petre, kankar and brick clay. Since brick clay is abundant throughout
the district, this region is known for producing bricks, thereby leading to the construction business thriving
within and outside Gorakhpur.
Medical facilities in Gorakhpur are much better than in surrounding regions and towns and due to this
there is quite an influx of people into the city in quest of these facilities. As a result of this, there is much
income from the service industry which continues to grow with each passing year.
Gorakhpur is the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway and the railways are therefore a booming
business. Combined with the tourism industry that sees millions of visitors each year, the railway industry
mints money with its industries that maintain coaches, engines and wagons as well.
INDUSTRY:
GIDA Sahjanwa is industrial area of Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is fast developing an
industrial area abbreviated as GIDA with many factories, including IGL, Parle and ARP, as well as power
looms, plywood and the only jute mill in Uttar Pradesh.
Located in the Industrial park (GIDA) of the Gorakhpur are:

TOURISM POTENTIAL:
Gorakhnath Temple: The Gorakhnath Nath (Gorakhnath Mutt) is a temple of the Nath monastic group in
the Nath tradition. The name Gorakhnath derives from the medieval saint, Gorakhnath (c. 11th century), a
famous yogi who travelled widely across India and authored a number of texts that form part of the canon
of the Nath sampradaya. The Nath tradition was founded by guru Matsyendranath.This math is situated
in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh within a large premises.The temple performs various cultural and social
activities and serves as the cultural hub of the city.
Geeta Press: - The Gita Press is the world's largest publisher of Hindu religious texts. It is located
in Gorakhpur city of India's Uttar Pradesh state. It was founded in 1923 by Jaya Dayal
Goyandka and Ghanshyam Das Jalan for promoting the principles of Sanatana Dharma. Hanuman
Prasad Poddar better known as "Bhaiji" was the founding and the lifetime editor of its noted magazine
who also wrote articles with his pen name "SHIV", Kalyan. It started publishing in 1927, with a circulation
of 1,600 copies and at present its print order had reached 2.5 lakh (in 2012). The Gita Press archives
contain over 3,500 manuscripts including over 100 interpretations of the Gita.
Buddha Mueseum: - Buddha Museum Gorakhpur was established in 1987 but the present building came
into existence in 1997.The museum's main aim is the collection, preservation, documentation, exhibition
of the cultural property and to make them available for educational activities to create awareness about
the glorious past. It show cases items like age old sculpture, figurines, terracotta items, beads etc. Most
of the objects here are rare and priceless.
Kushinagar: - Kushinagar is situated at 53 km east from Gorakhpur on the National Highway -28. The
reclining Nirvana statue of the Buddha is inside the Parinirvana Stupa. Statue is 6.10 metres long and is
made of monolith red - sand stone. It represents the "Dying Buddha" reclining on his right side with his
face towards the west. It is placed on a large brick-pedestal with stone-posts at the corners. Nirvana
Chaitya (Main Stupa)
Nirvana Chaitya is located just behind the Main Parinirvana Temple. It was excavated by Carlleyle in the
year 1876. During excavations, a copper-plate was found, which contained the text of the "Nidana-Sutra"
which concluded the statement that plate had been deposited in the "Nirvana-Chaitya" by one Haribala,
who also installed the great Nirvana Statue of Buddha in the temple front.
Ramabhar Stupa Ramabhar Stupa, also called a Mukutbandhan-Chaitya, is the cremation -place of
Buddha. This Site is 1.5 km east of the main Nirvana Temple on the Kushinagar-Deoria road.

Matha Kuar Shrine A Colossal statue of Lord Buddha is installed, which is carved out of one block which
represents Buddha seated under the "Bodhi Tree" in a pose known as " Bhumi Sparsh Mudra " (Earth
touching attitude). The inscription at the base of statue is datable to the 10th or 11th Century A.D.
SantKabir Nagar (Maghar) :- Maghar is a town and a nagar panchayat in Sant Kabir Nagar district in
the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Sant Kabir, the 15th Century mystic poet, is buried in Maghar.
