DIPLOMA IN MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS

9 am 10 June{1 pm 13 June 1996

PAPER C
ANALYSIS OF DATA
Attempt three of the four questions.
This is an `Open-Book' examination, involving use of the Statistical Laboratory's
network of workstations. Candidates will receive this paper at 9 am on Monday 10
June, and must hand in their scripts to the Chairman of Examiners by 1 pm on
Thursday 13 June.
(The DPMMS Computer Ocer and an Examiner will normally be available for
consultation if required between 9.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on these four days.)
Each candidate should submit his/her script with a signed statement that the work
has been carried out without any collaboration with others.
The scripts may be handwritten. Candidates are requested to submit at most 25
pages in total. They are advised that the total work set should take between 4 and
6 hours.

1 The data in the table at the back of this examination paper was collected for
a study on `Temperament, the self-system and recent life experiences as predictors
of behavioural deviance in 12 year-olds' by Professor I.M. Goodyer and others, of
Cambridge University Developmental Psychiatry Section.
The levels of behavioural deviance, temperament and `perceived self-
competence' were assessed on 208 11 years-olds in the community. Twelve months
later all subjects were assessed for behavioural deviance and for the number and
type of recent life events that had occurred between the two assessments. You may
read the data from the le provided via
read.table(": : :", header=T)
and then use
attach( )

to label the columns of the table. These are
1. bbefore Behaviour before = not deviant/deviant = 1/2
2. bafter Behaviour after = not deviant/deviant = 1/2
(thus, for example, 33 of 208 subjects were deviant at both assessments)

3 ID = subject identi er

4 Emo = emotionality9

5 Act = activity variables, with scores ranging from
6 Soc = sociability >
; 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest)
7 Shy = shyness
8 Ath = athletic ability 9

9 Phys = physical attractiveness > = These
> are the `perceived
self-competence' variables,
10 Schol = school competence > given by the child him/her self.
11 Socacc = social acceptability >
; Higher scores are the `most favourable'.
12 Glob = global(`general self-worth')
These are measures of adverse events that may have been
13 Loss experienced by the child in the 12 months of the study
14 Danger (0 is `best' and 3 is `worst')

<A measure of positive achievements
15 Ach = achievements :by the child for the 12 months of the study.
(0 is `worst' and 4 is `best')

Write a report, using appropriate graphs and/or tables, summarising the

main features of these data, and illustrating the use of 2 or 3 statistical models
likely to be of interest to Professor Goodyer and his colleagues.
2 The data in the table below arose from the Health & Lifestyle survey
mounted by the Health Promotion Research Trust in 1986. They show
r = the number of individuals reporting `heart trouble'

and n = the number of individuals at risk

in a ve-way classi cation according to the following factors.
1. Smoking (No, Ex-Smoker, or Current)
2. Drinking (No, Yes)
3. Age in years (< 40, 40 59, 60+)
4. Social class (Manual, Non-manual)
5. Family history of heart trouble (No, Yes)
Thus, for example, there were 9 individuals at risk in the category (Curr,
Yes, 60+, Non-manual, History=Yes) and of these 9, 3 reported heart trouble.

a) Describe carefully the Splus directives needed to set up this design.
b) Let p = r=n. Use some simple plots to show how p depends on each of
the 5 factors in turn.
c) Fit a suitable model for p in terms of the 5 factors, and discuss its
interpretation carefully.
d) What is the 2-way contingency table for the n total for Smoking and
Drinking? What does it show?

Warning: For examination purposes these data may have been slightly
adapted from those in the published source.
3 O'Neill et al. (1993), in a study of the e ects of chronic hyperin ation and
nutritional status on respiratory muscle strength in cystic brosis, collected the

a) Summarise the data with appropriate graphs and tables.
b) Illustrate the use of principal components analysis on the last 6 columns

predicted by the colomns Age, Sex, : : :, TLC.

Justify your choice of the version of the Simplex algorithm. Provide the
initial, optimal and all intermediate tableaux on each step of branching.
[A careful analysis, including the use of tableaux obtained at previous steps,
may reduce signi cantly the number of pivots needed for nding the optimal
solution.]
