Social Media Scavenger Hunt

London, Summer 2018

Purpose
The goals of this assignment are:

1) To get you using social media in different ways to report news.

2) To give you an “excuse” to explore some of Central London.
3) To give you an opportunity to work in pairs and get to know one of your classmates.

Platforms and Apps you will be using

a. Twitter
b. Facebook
c. Instagram
d. Snapchat
e. Pinterest
f. YouTube (possibly)

If you are using your personal accounts for this assignment, you may want to give your followers a
heads up, so they know your posts will be a bit different today…

Scavenger Hunt Rules and Guidelines

● You will be working in groups of two. You can use one of your social media accounts or both
of them....only one person in your team has to post the item with the hashtag for your team
to earn the point(s). You earn points for each completed task.

● This assignment is for fun and to get you exploring London and using social media to tell stories,
but it also counts towards your participation grade for this class. So take it seriously!

● We’ll be showing the fruits of your work in class tomorrow – so everyone in the group can see
and (constructively) critique your effort.

Track A Use the hashtag #SM4JA – on Twitter and Instagram

Track B Use the hashtag #SM4JB – on Twitter and Instagram

● In order for your answers to “count” they MUST HAVE THE HASHTAG.

1
● Some of the “clues” below will ask you to use Instagram or other apps. But you must also
POST ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS ON TWITTER. The reason for this is to make the feed of what
everyone is doing easier to follow. Quick tip: You can use IFTTT to auto-post your Instagram
pics to Twitter if you want to. It saves duplication…

● Think like a reporter. Have an eagle eye for the interesting, the important, the relevant, the
unique, and the immediate. Double check your facts. Get names and spell them correctly.
Adopt a learning, exploratory mindset. Try new things. Work efficiently.

● Think about your audience. Be sure you offer enough information and context that
people will understand and enjoy your posts even outside of our group.

● You don’t have to do these in order, although you should do #1 first.

● Be creative. Beyond raw point totals, we will also have a few special awards for teams that come
up with interesting posts that are in some way distinctive, intriguing, amusing, thought-
provoking, original, creative, interesting, thoughtful, useful and/or that are engaging to people
beyond our group.

DEADLINE: Post your content to Medium (again only one of you in the group has to do this) so that we
can see all of the content you created in one place. We will review this in class.

Medium is super intuitive to use. To post links, you click the + button and then < > option, which then
gives you the opportunity to paste in a URL (e.g. of a specific Tweet) and it embeds it.

Let’s Get Started! Here is the List of Challenges:

1. Who are you? Get started with an introductory tweet or two and a selfie of you and your
partner explaining what you are doing and introducing yourselves. 1 point.

2. Iconic London: Take a photo of a place or object which encapsulates London to you.
Explain why. 1 point.

3. World Cup London: There’s multiple games on this afternoon. Take a picture – or a short video
– of people watching it. And tell us where you are at the time. 1 point.

4. Location Story: Pick an iconic London location (e.g. British Museum, Covent Garden, an
historic church – London has lots - Trafalgar Square etc.) and create an Instagram story with 3-
5 images / videos which summarizes what that place is like. 5 points.

2
Bonus points for using emojis, filters etc. to enhance your IG story.

5. Snapchat Filter: Take a picture of something interesting but with a London GEO filter mapped
on top. Screenshot this and Tweet it. 1 point.

6. Boomerang: Create an interesting Boomerang of something London related (transport, people,

eating something British etc. you know how this stuff works!) 3 points.

7. Pinterest Board: Pick a theme, create a new board, and post 5 pics to it – that you have taken -
on that theme. 5 points.

8. Chill out. London has lots of lovely, unexpected green spaces, such as little squares around
Bloomsbury, quiet alleys with coffee shops and restaurants etc. Find somewhere chilled and
ideally green. Take a panorama of it (photo or video). 1 point.

9. Go Live. Find a location which interests and captivates you. It could be Hamley’s Toy Store, a
old pub like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, the South Bank, the list is endless. Go live on an app –
e.g. Periscope, YouTube Live, Instagram Live, Facebook Live etc. – and take us on a 60-90
second walking tour, telling us what we’re seeing and why we should care. 6 points.

NB: You can post from Facebook Live to Twitter using this IFTTT:
https://ifttt.com/applets/426866p-facebook-live-to-twitter-feed - be sure to save your live
segment + show us something interesting!

10. Talk to someone new. Briefly interview someone (not from this group, it has to be a random
person you’ve gone up to somewhere) and capture their story (who are they, where are they
from, what do they do etc.)

You can do this in a video (them talking to camera), an Instagram photo of them with a detailed
caption, a Tweetstorm, an Instagram or Snapchat Story etc.

You must include a photo/video of them. And if they are on social media, tag them. 6 points.

(And if you use a Snapchat story, be sure to capture the story so that it doesn’t disappear.
See Snapchat for Journalists for ideas such as how to use the Stories feature. And
upload/download Snaps to Instagram so

TOTAL = 30 points

8 Tips for Great Tweets, Instas and Snaps

1) Think like a professional journalist and storyteller.

2) Carefully craft what you are producing. Think first before you publish. How can you refine the text
you are writing, the image you’re taking etc.

3) This is NOT a PR/marketing assignment, so no “cheerleading.” You’re reporting.

4) “Who, what, why, where, when and how” are the journalistic mantras behind any story.

5) Make every word and every image count. You have 140 characters in each tweet, but you can say a
lot if you tap into your creative side.

6) Get creative. Where can you go and what can you do that will make your assignment stand out
from your peers?

7) Follow the hashtags for your group and comments, share and use for inspiration in your own
assignments.

Track A Use the hashtag #SM4JA – on Twitter and Instagram

Track B Use the hashtag #SM4JA – on Twitter and Instagram

You can also copy in @geolondon on Instagram. And #geolondon

 They’ll probably share your best stuff!

8) Travel far and wide. Or go deep. You could do everything in one amazing location. Or use this as an
opportunity to visit a ton of different places to get different stories, images and perspectives. There’s
merits to both approaches.

Again, consider, how you can do produce something of high quality which is unique to you and your
partner and unlikely to be replicated by others in the group?

Distinctiveness is a key journalistic skill and virtue to have. STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD!

GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!
