Dynamic Analysis Tutorial

This document provides three tutorials on dynamic analysis of building frames. The first tutorial involves analyzing a two-story frame as a two degree-of-freedom system. The second tutorial analyzes a single-story frame as a single degree-of-freedom system. The third tutorial involves deriving the equation of motion for a three-story frame modeled as a three degree-of-freedom system.

Tutorial: Dynamic Analysis

1. A two storey office building is idealized as two-dimensional frame for dynamic analysis as
shown in Figure Q1. It has rigid floors and the masses of the building are lumped on to
the floor slabs as shown in the figure. Take EI/mh3 =20
a. Idealize the frame as a two degrees of freedom system, showing the mass and
the stiffness for the dynamic analysis
b. Derive the equation of motion for the system
c. Calculate the natural periods and associated mode shapes
d. Sketch the associated mode shapes with respect to a vertical axis

2. A single storey building is idealized as a two-dimensional frame for dynamic analysis as
shown in Figure Q2. It has a rigid floor and can be considered as a shear frame structure.
EI = 30 x 1012 Nmm2.

Figure Q2
a. Idealize the frame as a single degree of freedom system, showing the mass and
the stiffness for dynamic analysis
b. Derive the equation of motion for the side sway of the frame.
c. Calculate the natural period.
d. If the initial displacement is 20mm and initial velocity is 20mm/s, calculate the
displacement of the frame at t=3 seconds.
3. Derive the equation of motion for a 3 degrees of freedom system. Thus determine the
natural freequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the three storied structure
shown in Figure Q3.
